Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 257
1793 Liberty Cap Cent. . S-13, R4-. VF-30. Glossy dark steel brown and chocolate with medium brown toning in protected areas of the reverse. Smooth surfaces that are free of any hint of corrosion, but there is some loose dirt caked into a couple of the protected areas of the reverse. The only defects are a few light nicks on the obverse, including several in the field below the cap and a small but relatively fresh one in the field left of the cap. Nicely struck very slightly off center to the left, but all the border beads remain on the planchet. EAC grade VF20 and very attractive at that level, especially for a Liberty Cap '93. Noyes photo #34912. The Hesselgesser provenance is noted on the PCGS label. Only 3 graded at PCGS in all grades of VF, none graded higher.
Estimated Value $20,000 - 40,000.
Ex Dr. Hesselgesser.

Lot 261
1794 Liberty Cap Cent. . S-28, R2+. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. Frosty steel brown and chocolate with darker olive and reddish chocolate splashes on the obverse. The surfaces are satiny and mint luster covers the protected areas on both sides, especially on the reverse. There is a hint of microscopic roughness at the upper part of the cap where it touches the hair and a few of the usual tiny planchet chips that didn't completely strike out around the bust tip and at OF on the reverse. Otherwise the planchet and surfaces are flawless. The only sign of contact is a shallow mark (possibly pre-striking) in the center of the cheek. Sharply struck M-LDS, Breen state VI. EAC grade AU55. Just a hint of rub on the highest points of the design from mint state. Called AU55 and tied for CC#5 in the Bland census. Noyes photo #34976. The Hesselgesser provenance is noted on the PCGS label. Pop 7; 7 finer.
Estimated Value $12,000 - 24,000.

Traces of frosty luster remain in protected areas of the reverse. No contact marks. A couple tiny planchet chips right of the D in UNITED can help identify this cent. MDS, Breen state II.
