Lot 3126
New York. Sept. 2, 1775 $2. PCGS graded Apparent Very Fine 25, Edge Split at Top Center. . Fr-NY-178. Like many Colonial notes, this piece has a small problem that merited a PCGS "red label" holder. Like most of those notes, it retains much appeal to collectors, especially considering the large majority of Colonials available that have more severe and numerous problems. This piece bears the vignette of a pair of storks, with the Latin motto "SALUTARIS SIBI PARENTIBUSQUE" that is translated by Newman as "Fortunate for itself and its parents."

Lot 3130
New York. Jan. 6, 1776 4 shillings. PCGS graded Apparent About New 50, Edge Tear at Top Right. . Fr-NY-183. This is a truly scarce issue in any grade, with only 2,500 notes of this denomination printed. Conventional wisdom about the PCGS "red label" holder has begun to come around to the original intention of PCGS Currency in designating problem notes with a distinctive holder: instead of being ignored, it has become apparent that there are many very collectible and desirable notes that have varying degrees of problems. Instead of making them "unsaleable" to collectors, the accurate description of problems have made buyers better informed to make an accurate decision as to their value.
Estimated Value $125 - 175.

Lot 3142
New York. Mar. 5, 1776 $1/2. PCGS graded Extremely Fine 45. . Fr-NY-189. Perhaps the boldest example from this issue here offered, with surprisingly intricate design details evident on both sides. The large "planting a tree" vignette is featured on the back, along with the motto "POSTERITATE" (Latin meaning: "For posterity"). A highly desireable example that is likely to receive a number of strong bids.

Lot 3146
New York. Mar. 5, 1776 $2/3. PCGS graded About New 50. . Fr-NY-190. This attractive high grade example has but a couple of visible corner folds, although the grade assigned by PCGS is likely tempered by a couple of very light stains that do not overly detract from the above average eye appeal. It bears the small eagle vignette on the back, with the fitting motto in Latin "FORTIS A FORTE," or "Strength comes from strength."

Lot 3148
New York. Mar. 5, 1776 $1. PCGS graded Apparent Extremely Fine 45, Rust Stains. . Fr-NY-191. Although quite high grade for the issue, there are numerous tiny spots of rust that are plainly evident but not overly distracting. This denomination bears the large vignette of a sheaf of wheat, with the Latin motto "ACERVUS E PARVIS GRANDIS": translated by Newman as "Great accumulation from small things."

Lot 3149
New York. Mar. 5, 1776 $3. PCGS graded Apparent Very Fine 35, Edge Split at Top Center, Mounting Remnants on Back. . Fr-NY-193. Despite being housed in a PCGS "red label" holder, the problems on this note are actually quite innocuous--the edge split at the top is hardly visible, and the mounting remnants on the back are likely removable with expert care. Only 2,350 examples of this denomination were printed, each bearing the popular Ten Commandments vignette on the back. The Latin motto "LEX REGIT ARMA TUENTUR" is singularly fitting for the contemporary revolutionary atmosphere--as translated by Newman, it means "Law rules, weapons protect."
Estimated Value $200 - 300.

New York. Aug. 13, 1776 $10. PCGS graded Extremely Fine 45PPQ. . Fr-NY-205. An extraordinary New York note with just a few light folds and no problems whatsoever. The margins are even all around, and the printing and signatures are bold and clear. The scarce and popular elephant vignette adorns the back, with the Latin motto "PAR VIRIBUS VIRTUS" resonating with revolutionary patriots: "Virtue is equal to strength."

New York. Aug. 13, 1776 $10. PCGS graded Very Fine 35PPQ. . Fr-NY-205. A second example of the scarce $10 with the ever-popular elephant vignette, problem-free and attractive for the grade. The choice of this elephant vignette is intriguing, both for the unnatural length of the elephant's trunk and for the obvious inappropriateness of an elephant on a New York note.

Lot 3157
Pennsylvania. May 1, 1760 20 shillings. PCGS graded Apparent About New 50, Edge Split at Right. . Fr-PA-112. A nice Ben Franklin-printed Pennsylvania colonial whose only flaw is a edge split along the horizontal fold at right. Although housed in a PCGS "red label" holder, indicative of a note with problems, this is actually a very high grade note for this issue that usually comes notoriously heavily circulated. It has three dark, clear signatures, and the ever-important "Printed by B. Franklin" imprint is sharp.

Pennsylvania. June 18, 1764 3 pence. PCGS graded Choice About New 58PPQ. . Fr-PA-115. This gorgeous Ben Franklin printed small change Pennsylvania has ideal color, bold embossing, and tremendous eye appeal for the issue. It is a diagonal sheet fold away from a Choice New grade. Scarce colonial notes in high grades seem to be tremendously undervalued from the standpoint of rarity and relative value.
