Lot 2677
1911 $20 St. Gaudens. NGC graded MS-64. Nice bold strike. Rich orange-gold and satin-finish color is nicely layered over each side of this lustrous near-Gem P-mint twenty. As an example of how these should be made, the coin is struck with exactly the required mathematical precision by the dies in which all areas, not just some, are complete by a highly successful strike. Only 197,250 minted. Pop 268; 54 finer.

1911-D $20 St. Gaudens. PCGS graded MS-65. An intensely lustrous pleasing golden gem! The fully brilliant example we now hand over bidders beats (from a technical angle) practically every other Gem of the widely collected 1911-D issue that have passed through the various grading services. Unlike the usual survivor with its quantity of field marks and weak impression, this handsome coin is very sharp from top to bottom, center to edge (PCGS # 9158) .

1911-D $20 St. Gaudens. PCGS graded MS-65. Golden orange. A resplendent Gem. This is one of our favorite years in the series, and collectors who have made the introduction to a 1911-D or 1911-S will enjoy its velvety textured luster all the more. Yet, where or in what circumstances it avoided heavy handling can only be guessed at. For the coin is a full-fledged MS65 with leanings toward an even higher grade (PCGS # 9158) .
Estimated Value $1,100 - 1,200.

1911-D $20 St. Gaudens. PCGS graded MS-64. Lightly toned. A solid example of an orange tinted gold coin with minimal abrasions or marks. In their day, Saint-Gaudens $20 gold pieces rarely circulated (which is why few are seen in grades more worn than, say, EF). Instead, these were used for bank reserves (stored in vaults) or accepted in international funds payments between governments or private banks. During one phase of the banking panic in 1932-33, caravans of armored trucks were photographed leaving the Federal Reserve building in New York City for the docks, where the cargo was loaded onto ships for European recipients (PCGS # 9158) .

1911-S $20 St. Gaudens. PCGS graded MS-66. Well struck and frosty. This is one of the smoothest, cleanest, and most satiny examples of the 1911-S issue that bidders will be presented. In fact, few records exist for MS66 twenties offered in recent years. The full, flashy luster radiates from nicely toned orange-golden fields in a pleasing somersaulting display, and there are few surface blemishes to distract the eye. While a plentiful date in typical bagmarked grades, the 1911-S becomes very scarce at or above the premium Gem level of preservation offered here. A coin with the full weight of history behind it! Pop 18; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 9159) .

According to the secret records of the U.S. Presidency, during the time this $20 gold piece was minted, President William Howard Taft (1909-13), our heaviest president, weighing 332 pounds, once got stuck in the White House bath tub. A new one was installed, big enough, it is said, to hold four grown men!

1911-S $20 St. Gaudens. PCGS graded MS-64. This is a virtually blemish-free case in point of the choiceness of a $20 Saint-Gaudens in this grade: sleek "old gold" in color, with mint bloom that grabs hold of the full effect of the careful preservation since it was made. As is often seen with the 1911-S, the imprint that was left by the dies shows full sharpness which makes it stand apart from other issues around it. It has a wonderful clear sharp strike, evidenced in the photographs (PCGS # 9159) .

1913 $20 St. Gaudens. NGC graded Proof 65. The Sandblast Proofs of this year are very rare, perhaps even more so than the previous two years. The mintage being a mere 58 pieces, these coins were rare even at the time of issue. It was long erroneously believed that perhaps as few as 12-15 (Bowers) and as many as 20-25 (Akers) examples exist today. These estimates are derived in part on Breen's having been only able to trace sale records of five specimens for his 1977 Proof book. Akers recorded 14 appearances over the 40 years covered by his survey of auctions. Census numbers of survivors point to as high as 35 coins with many duplicate submittals not accounted for in the published figures, still a small number when viewed against the numbers of wealthy collectors of Proof U.S. gold.

The sand-blast surface on the 1913 double eagles is close to that seen on the 1911 and 1912 Proofs. However, this coin closely resembles a 1908 with its reddish-khaki color. The depth and purity of color on this coin is really something, and would serves to highlight the razor-sharp devices. An immaculate Gem Proof by any standards! Only 58 struck. Pop 11; 22 finer.

In 1908, the Philadelphia Mint introduced the sandblast finish on gold Proofs. After criticism from the numismatic community, the Mint altered its procedure, dropped the sandblast style and struck the satin finish. This, too, proved to be an anathema to collectors, so the first technique was revived for 1911-15. In Mint correspondence of the period, Charles E. Barber called the satin finish "bright", while other officials in their correspondence referred to the sandblast pieces as "dull" Proofs. Assistant Secretary Piatt Andrew wrote this to Treasury Secretary Woodin on September 22, 1909, "It appears that the ordinary proof coins are given this dull finish by means of a sandblast." All sandblast Proofs of either type (1908, 1911-15 or the "satin" 1909-10) have a square rim edge as a distinctive point.
Estimated Value $50,000 - 55,000.

1913-S $20 St. Gaudens. PCGS graded MS-63. Mostly untoned. Scarce date. Tiny mark on the left "flight feather". Here is another key date to the Indian Eagle series, the 1913-S. Few were struck, most circulated at the time of issue, and only a handful it seems were saved in Mint quality. Perhaps the population figures given at the end of this description will give the bidders some idea of how special this coin is.

The surfaces are choice, though a magnifying glass will locate a few of tiny tick marks on Liberty's face, on the eagle, and in the fields; just the same the fields and devices are certainly of high choice quality. An essential coin for the numismatist to purchase if he or she hopes to complete this scarcest group in the Indian Eagle series, the low mintage dates (PCGS # 9163) .

1914 $20 St. Gaudens. NGC graded MS-65. Light orange toning with very clean fields other than for a few light diagonal marks on the left leg. Scarce date in MS65 or better. A leading condition rarity within the P-mint Indian Eagles group, 1914 is difficult to locate in the upper Mint State grades, more difficult than the 1910, 1912, 1913, and 1915, and never, ever found in profusion. This is a fresh, glowing Gem with sleek orange-gold patina. The luster is well above average for the type, hence the grade, although in keeping with our quest for accuracy, we do come across some light contact marks here and there. Razor sharp striking definition makes all design elements stand out smartly, like a row of soldiers at attention. Pop 24; 1 finer in 66. (PCGS # 9164) .

The brilliant luster found on 1914 San Francisco twenties has been noted by us before, but we justify the repetition here concerning this equally impressive Denver Mint example from the same year.

1914 was the year that the newly authorized banking cartel, the Federal Reserve system, went into operation. Within 19 years, the country, due to excess inflation of paper money and credit, went "off gold" for good, with the FED (as it is known today) bearing much of the blame.
