Lot 2395
1853/2 $10 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-55. A nice untoned example. Choice rims plus smoother-than average fields and devices. A coin that clearly outranks most others in the About Uncirculated class. This is an extremely rare variety. The date is set very low in the field, and is heavy, meaning that it was deeply punched into the die; seen are plain thin traces of the middle stroke of a 2 within the 3. Pop 9; 2 finer; 1 in 58; 1 in 61. (PCGS # 8611) .

1854-S $10 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-58. First year of the "S" mint. A hint of light gold toning. The 1854-S eagle is fairly scarce in higher grades with some luster adhering. At most, several hundred regular examples of the 1854-S $10 gold exist mostly in moderately circulated grades. This is one of the better pieces, and as such, a splendid, original uncleaned AU58. Mintage, though high the year before, dropped considerable in 1855 when only 9,000 pieces were struck. This coin offers excellent value for the grade and appearance (PCGS # 8618) .

1858 $10 Liberty. NGC graded MS-60. Encased in NGC holder 1828489-001. Low mintage of 2,521 struck. Nice strike and untoned. Very rare date in all grades. PCGS has graded only 1 mint state coin that being MS64 probably the same MS64 NGC coin. Very scarce date. Ten years after the famous California Gold Rush started in 1848, "Pike's Peak or Bust" became the cry of gold seekers heading for what today is Denver, Colorado during the subsequent rush and hysteria to get rich quick. This is a key date Eagle from that momentous year, one which boasts unusual properties so indicative of the times: rarity, value, collector appeal, and, in this particular coin, immeasurable beauty because it has been carefully preserved in Mint State condition! A remarkable coin. A once-in-a-blue-moon opportunity!

The 1858 is one of the key dates in the Eagle series, among the rarest, and because of earlier enthusiastic auction descriptions by such winsome and self-promoting dealers as B. Max Mehl, it is undoubtedly the most famous issue of this sometimes overlooked denomination. Most of the relatively few known survivors (perhaps 25 to 30 in all grades) are well worn with Very Fine being average. Until this high end specimen was sells, there will be lots to talk about; after the sale, the coin will likely go into hiding for years and years. Very few Mint State 1858 Eagles get offered for sale.Pop 2; 1 in 61; 1 in 64. (PCGS # 8625) .

1858-S $10 Liberty. NGC graded AU-58. Untoned and a nice strike. A mark on the face from the lips to the hair. After many years, this date is apparently still unknown in Mint State grades, since not a one has yet been certified by either NGC or PCGS! Here we present one of the finest of the scant 11,800 struck to come down to us. A lovely AU58. A bold AU58, for that matter. An AU58 whose devices are crisp, with no signs of unevenness even on the eagle's knobby claws. A fair quotient of luster remains in the fields, with no staining or heavy bagmarks to put you off bidding for it. Both sides do show moderate handling marks, we'll grant you that, but with nothing untoward to report. Only 11,800 coins struck. Tied for finest. Pop 11, none finer at NGC.

1861 $10 Liberty. NGC graded AU-58. Light golden toning with luster around the main devices as well as within the hair on Liberty and in the eagle's feathers. A boldly original, uncleaned specimen of this Civil War year. (The American Civil War of 1861-65 has been known by numerous alternative names that reflect the historical, political, and cultural sensitivities of different groups and regions. Some that are current in the 21st century are: Civil War, War Between the States, War of the Rebellion, War for Southern Independence, War of Northern Aggression, and Mr. Lincoln's War. The end result was the same, the further consolidation of power into the body of the central authority in Washington, D.C. During the conflict, gold coins such as this $10 Liberty were either hoarded or exported, with all specie pretty much disappearing from the streams of commerce east of the Mississippi River.) 1867 $10 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-61. Well struck with light golden toning. Reflective surfaces. Only 3,090 pieces struck. The surfaces on this handsome coin are judged by us to be warm orange-gold in color, and quite lustrous, with the prooflike surface abetting its already outstanding Mint State quality. Almost unheard of in Mint State, don't expect the usual halfhearted impression left by the striking of the (sometimes worn) dies that made this piece, either, for we are pleased to report the opposite is true. This is a very bold coin with sharp centers including hair curls, hair bun, and full detail in the beaded hair cord Liberty wears. There are some lightly scattered marks on both sides, but none affecting the overall beauty, none which disturb the important rims either. All in all a very respectable acquisition for any advanced collector of rare U.S. gold eagles. PCGS number 22100633. The finest graded 1867 mint state example. Pop 1; none finer at PCGS. 1868-S $10 Liberty. NGC graded AU-55. An exceptionally choice, lustrous Eagle in all respects, the luster is bold and unyielding in the most protected areas, while pale reddish toning blossoms on both sides. The strike is bold enough to warrant mention, indeed, better than virtually any other S-mint date in the 1860s decade. The usual peppering of small abrasions from its time spent in circulation. Very scarce in this grade (PCGS # 8654) .

1868-S $10 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-53. Some scattered marks, one on her jaw. Lightly toned. The San Francisco Mint struck 13,500 eagles in 1868. Of that number, perhaps the entire mintage entered circulation. Worn, marked-up pieces are the usual result (when they are available, which is not often). A higher end AU53 is definitely worth consideration. Pop 10; 12 finer; 10 in 55; 2 in 58. (PCGS # 8654) .

Lot 2404
1870-CC $10 Liberty. NGC graded AU-50. NGC holder 3004473-001. Some mint flash still present. Light toning around the devices. An incredibly wonderful and highly rated rarity, a benchmark for the few other About Uncirculated 50 examples that share this lofty grade. While the strike is bold and crisp, it is not quite full on the stars, yet certainly few of the head details are left to the viewer's imagination. Also, there is a sharp eagle. Later CC-mint $10 gold pieces struck in the mid-1870s are, for the most part, poorly made, which gives the nod of approval to this 1870-CC. Light surface abrasions are consistent with its few years spent in circulation in the "Wild West."

Only a single pair of dies were used for 1870-CC. On January 6, 1870, the Carson City Mint opened for bullion deposits and coinage. During its 23 years of operation, the Mint would create some of the most difficult to acquire and romanticized rarities in numismatics. While there are a fair number of scarce dates among the branch mint's silver and gold denominations, few have the allure of the 1870-CC eagle. It is the rarest eagle struck in Carson City. This issue also outshines the similarly illustrious 1870-CC double eagle for top honors as a rarity among all CC-mint gold coins!

A total mintage of only 5,908 pieces explains this coin's rarity. While the 1872-CC, 1873-CC, 1876-CC, 1877-CC, 1878-CC, and 1879-CC may have had lower mintages, far fewer 1870-CC examples survive in all grades. It seems logical that the entire 1870-CC production was put into circulation at the time of production. It is hardly a miracle, then, that the 1870-CC is celebrated as a condition rarity in addition to being an absolute rarity. Pop 7; 7 finer; 4 in 53; 3 in 55. (PCGS # 8658) .
Estimated Value $40,000 - 50,000.

1872-CC $10 Liberty. PCGS graded EF-45. Lightly toned. Slightly lustrous and decidedly attractive with medium, soft orange-gold and pale rose haze over the surfaces. With the exception of a small but noticeable scuff mark in the field to the left of the eagle, this coin has very clean surfaces. This is unusual as most 1872-CC double eagles show heavy digs and abrasions.

As long-time collectors are aware, the 1872-CC is a little less scarce than the 1871-CC but it becomes an extremely challenging coin to find in the middle range of EF. In the highest ranges of this grade, of course, the 1872-CC is a very scarce coin and there are probably no more than a handful properly graded About Uncirculated examples currently known. Pop 11; 10 finer; 5 in 50; 1 in 53; 2 in 55; 2 in 58. (PCGS # 8664) .

Lot 2406
1874-CC $10 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-58. Coin is encased in PCGS holder 50122008. Well struck. Lustrous and untoned. Winter 1-A, the only known dies. Better struck than the 1872-CC and 1873-CC eagles, the present near-Mint survivor is sharply defined with no areas of bothersome lack of detail. There is little in the way of light highpoint rub, and the number of scattered abrasions is on a par with what one might expect for a CC-mint gold coin of this size that saw a little circulation. An attractive, still partially lustrous survivor of this conditionally challenging, frontier-era delivery. Previously housed in a PCGS holder with the same grade, this coin tied for second finest-known honors among 1874-CC Eagles certified at NGC. NGC Census: only 2; with a lone MS-65 example finer. PCGS reports a single AU-58 and just one Mint State coin (MS-63) graded higher.

The 1874-CC is definitely a front-page issue in this important Liberty $10 gold series -- a fact that might stem from its status as a standard-bearer for the Carson City Mint from the 1870s. While there were certainly more Eagles struck in Carson City in 1874 than during the previous three years combined, the 1874-CC was a heavily circulated issue that can be very difficult to locate in high grades. Even a small hoard of 20-30 pieces that entered the market in the mid-1990s was comprised chiefly of coins that grade only Very Fine or Extremely Fine. Possibly as few as 10 to 12 About Uncirculated pieces are known. In high grades, the '74-CC is rarer than all of the Carson City Mint eagles delivered during the 1880s and 1890s. Pop 1; 1 better in 63. (PCGS # 8670) .

1874-CC $10 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-53. Light golden-orange with traces of luster within the devices. The rims are nice and clean. A fresh and still glistening high-end About Uncirculated whose original luster seems poised to elevate it a point or two on the grading scale; plus we find a touch of antique orange and dusky champagne toning, especially beautiful on the choice surfaces. Adequately struck with nearly full details on both sides. Definitely a CC-mint eagle to consider for a high quality set. Pop 3; 8 finer; 6 in 55; 1 in 58; 1 in 63. (PCGS # 8670) .

1874-CC $10 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-50. Well struck and untoned. Semi reflective surfaces amplify any surface marks. A rare, often overlooked issue among With Motto $10 Liberty issues, the '77-S had a mintage of only 17,000 pieces. The majority of survivors are Very Fine with a few Extremely Fine coins known. In About Uncirculated, 1877-S is a major rarity and compares favorably to the more talked about 1876-S (but priced significantly lower). This piece is tied with a dozen others at the AU 58 level, plus there are several Mint States reported. As such, it is a coin that will undoubtedly be appreciated for its original surfaces as well as its high grade. The surface has ample luster, and might actually pass for mint state but for some small friction in the fields. No defects to speak of. A choice example for the connoisseur of the series. Only 17,000 coins minted. Pop 13; 2 finer; 1 in 60; 1 in 61. (PCGS # 8670) .

1875-CC $10 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-53. PCGS holder 21169999. Traces of luster about the devices. Lightly toned with a few marks on the face and in the upper right obverse field. Observation has it that most Carson City collectors are well aware of the absolute rarity most dates in the 1870s, including the rarity of the 1875-CC. Few, however, ever get the chance to appreciate the "condition" scarcity of this key issue. Only a handful of pieces are believed known in AU condition, per the supplied census, few making their way to market in any year. The peach-gold surfaces show typical abrasions for this normally heavily marked issue. Thin remnants of mint luster can still be seen, mostly around the reverse legends and obverse devices. 1876-CC $10 Liberty. PCGS graded EF-45. Lovely orange and golden toning. Low mintage. Some luster still visable. A few light marks in the field, the most evident (and it is minimal) occurs between stars 8 and 9. While this issue is often more carefully made than the 1872-1875 Carson City, Nevada branch mint eagles, the present example is still a little softly defined on the hair curls over Liberty's brow. The corresponding area (lower eagle) on the reverse is also a little diminished, but all in all the coin is appreciably sharp for the grade. Some residual luster adheres; a survivor with a typical abrasion count. Most often encountered in grades below the Choice Extremely Fine level, the 1876-CC (4,696 pieces produced) is the eighth rarest Carson City Eagle. Pop 18; 11 in 50; 4 in 53; 2 in 55; 3 in 58. The only known dies: Date logotype nicely impressed, numerals nicely centered horizontally and vertically. Left edge of lower serif of 1 over left side of dentil. Die artifacts around first few stars. 1877 $10 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-61. A needle sharp strike with flashy proof-like surfaces. Has the look of a slightly impaired Proof. The 1877 is one of numerous key condition rarities in the long-lived Liberty $10 series. Very few were originally produced, only a handful of mint states are known. This sharply impressed, crisply detailed representative exhibits wonderful prooflike mirrors common to low mintage gold pieces of the era. Both sides are richly endowed with orange-gold hues plus have frosty texture on the devices that thins to vivid prooflike brightness in the field. There are far fewer than normal small abrasions for the MS61 level of preservation. While sometimes overshadowed by the 1875 P-mint Eagle rarity, this 1877 coin is no less of a highlight that represents an important bidding opportunity for the astute specialist. Only 797 minted with only 2 mint state examples currently known (PCGS MS-60 and this example). The finest graded business strike in existance. Pop 1 none finer. (PCGS # 8677) .

1884-CC $10 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-61. Frosty and delicate golden-orange in color. Among the finest known. Like few other coins of this year and mint, this piece is very well defined, frosty from top to bottom, and therefore, highly attractive. The peripheral stars as well as the eagle's feathers are fully brought up, while the hair curls above Liberty's face are sharply struck also. The surfaces are exceptionally lustrous for an MS61 with rich reddish patina and just a hint of orange around the margins. Numerous small abrasions on each side account for the coin's grade. A raised die line on Liberty's neck is diagnostic of the one obverse die used to strike the issue. Only 9,925 struck. Pop 3; 2 finer; 1 in 62; 1 in 63. (PCGS # 8704) .
