1913 $2.50 Indian. NGC graded Proof 66. A fresh well struck matte proof. A significant and rare coin in this grade. Remember that a scant 165 were coined in Proof, and few can match the level of quality here. On the obverse, we see no flaw or signs of contact, and a lovely deep orange to coppery gold patina; the Chief's hair and headdress are razor sharp. On the reverse, similar bold detail occurs and again without signs of contact, the eagle bold and virtually perfect. Deep sandblast gold in color, free of spotting. 1915 $2.50 Indian. NGC graded Proof 66. The 1915 quarter eagle Proof is considered by most authorities to be the crucial date in the Sandblast Proof series from 1908 through 1915. Only 100 pieces were struck (the lowest in the series), less an unknown number that were melted in early 1916. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 to 60 coins exist today in varying grades.
This example features warm lemon-yellow surfaces with no contact marks or obvious hairlines to injure the beauty of the piece. Serenely appealing and well struck, this piece possesses both technical quality and aesthetic merit from the way the surface "facets" sparkle under reflected light -- always a highly sought after combination.
