Lot 2043
1883 Hawaiian Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. Toned. A uniform blending of greyish-violet on both sides. Fully original with warm "aged silver" color showing that it has never been dipped or cleaned. It is easy to see this piece was delivered a sufficient blow by the dies which imparted their sharp relief to the struck planchet. The most noticeable detail is in the King's beard since this is the highest point of the design and often strikes poorly even on the frostiest pieces. King Kalakaua reigned over his island domain from 1874 until 1891. He authorized a coinage of silver dimes, quarters, half dollars, and silver dollars, which were struck at the San Francisco mint to the same weight and fineness as their U.S. counterparts (PCGS # 10987) .
Estimated Value $500 - 600.

Lot 2046
1837 Feuchtwanger cent. NGC graded MS-63. Bright and lustrous with a couple of toned areas on the obverse. The design is of an eagle grasping a snake in its talons (similar to the motif found on coins of Mexico of the same period). Dr. Lewis Feuchtwanger in 1837 petitioned Congress to adopt his German-silver-like metal for the U.S. copper Cent. The petition, supported by Senator Thomas Hart Benton was rejected by mint Director Patterson in 1838. Feuchtwanger published a book on gems in 1872 and died in 1876.
