1936 Elgin Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-67. Lovely toning around the edges. Eye-catching satin luster cascades from top to bottom on the vibrant silver surfaces of this beautiful Elgin commemorative. The coin marks the centennial of the city of Elgin, Illinois, the obverse being a copy of "Head of a Pioneer" by Trygve Rovelstad, a name familiar in school history textbooks. The statue from which this head derives is represented on the reverse by the coin's artist who was also sculpted the statue. There were 20,000 Elgins sold at $1.50 each out of an original authorization of 25,000; the remaining 5,000 were returned to the mint and remelted in 1937. Pop 96; 14 finer.

1922 Grant Half Dollar, with star. PCGS graded MS-63. Old green holder. Nice even toning on both sides. Highly lustrous and largely choice with warm toning highlights on both sides. Nearly fully struck, with just the faintest touch of weakness at the highest point of the Grant's hair at the temple. This is the much scarcer With Star variety (PCGS # 9307) .

Lot 1955
1922 Grant Half Dollar, no star. MS-65. Lightly toned. This is a splendid silver gray specimen with a faint golden zephyr-like veil of russet on both sides. Well struck for the Type, certainly much better-quality than similar high-end examples offered in recent years in which the centers are weak; we find it worthy of strong bidder attention.

Trivia: The question "Who's buried in Grant's Tomb?" was used by Groucho Marx in his radio and TV quiz show, the correct answer to which resulted in a consolation prize to contestants who had won no money. Some contestants thought it was a trick question. Grant's grandson, Ulysses S. Grant IV (a university professor) appeared on the program in 1953.

1921 Missouri Half Dollar, 2 x 4. MS-60 Plus. Deeply toned. Still very lustrous and, due to the range of hues in the toning, pleasingly attractive for this scarce, low mintage issue. The 100th anniversary of the admission of Missouri to the Union was celebrated at Sedalia during August 1921. The first coins struck show 2*4 incused, indicating that Missouri was the 24th star in the flag.

Lot 1965
1921 Missouri Half Dollar, no 2 x 4. PCGS graded MS-65. Lightly toned with soft pastel colors. The surfaces are highly lustrous and each side has a natural coating of patina that swirls and alternates between lighter and medium hues. A dampened impression is often found from the weak rebound of the dies that made the Missouri half dollar coinage; however, rather than being halfhearted, this particular coin's design is boldly crisp. A beautiful gem. Pop 205; 28 finer in 66. (PCGS # 9330) .

1921 Missouri Half Dollar, no 2 x 4. PCGS graded MS-65. Mostly white and frosty. An justifiably lustrous gem with sizzling frostiness beneath a hint of toning. The reverse and obverse centers play host to the rich frost Missouris are known for, and originality always appreciated by the stronger buyers. In short, a lovely bold coin, one that certainly meets the qualifications for MS65 grade. Scarce. Pop 205; 28 finer in 66. (PCGS # 9330) .

1938 New Rochelle Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-67. Nice original toning. Tremendous detail from a very positive strike, which collectors like better to see than wishy-washy detail on their commemorative coinage; furthermore, the surfaces show sharp silver color underlying the beautiful (and original) toning. Superb! Pop 126; 2 finer in 68. (PCGS # 9335) .

Why the calf? The title to the land that the French Huguenots purchased from John Pell provided that a fattened calf be given away every year on June 20. This is represented by a calf and figure of John Pell on the obverse of the coin. The fleur-de-lis, which is shown on the reverse, is adopted from the seal of the city. (The fleur-de-lis is a heraldic device somewhat resembling three petals or floral segments of an iris.).

1937-D Oregon Trail Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-68. Well struck with lovely golden toning around the edges. A near perfect coin. This coin radiates attractive original color from the issue card, with no detracting marks or problems. Superb and sharply struck on obverse and reverse. Designs are by Laura Gardin Fraser. Many are of the opinion the Oregon Trail is one of the classiest designs ever used on a commemorative issue. On the obverse, the artist depicts an Indian with blanket and bow. On the reverse, a Conestoga wagon of the period heading into the sunset. Oregons were struck intermittently from 1926 to 1939 at the various mints. Several issues have extremely low mintage. 1939-S Oregon Trail Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. Untoned. Both the peripheries and the central reverse are impressive for their detail, and the frosty textured surfaces are Gem quality. Silver luster exactly as it came from the dies radiates in all directions from the surfaces of this attractive Oregon (PCGS # 9354) .

The Oregon Trail was one of the key overland migration routes on which pioneers traveled across the North American continent on foot, horseback or in wagons in order to settle new parts of the United States during the 19th century. The Trail spanned over half the continent, measuring 2,170 miles west through territories and land later to become six U.S. states (Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, Idaho, and Oregon). It's heyday was from 1841 to 1869. Once the first transcontinental railroad was completed in 1869, the use of this trail by long distance travelers diminished as the railroad slowly replaced it.

1915-S Panama-Pacific Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-67. Lovely rainbow toning around the edges. An appealing fresh toned gem, fully struck, and unmarred by spots or contact marks. Quite difficult to encounter in this nice a grade showing such exquisite colors. Devices are sharp in all areas, as struck, as desired by collectors, which the grading service has weighed carefully in assigning the grade, as also desired by collectors.

Coins were struck for the large memorial held in San Francisco in 1915 to publicize the opening of the Panama Canal. The half dollar was created by Charles E. Barber, one of the mint's engravers. It depicts Liberty and a child on the obverse. Liberty is holding two bunches of flowers while behind, the sun sets between the southern and northern ends of the Golden Gate, entrance to San Francisco Bay. Barber placed an eagle on the reverse, having it perch atop the union shield rather than the shield superimposed on its breast as was the custom until then. In all, 27,314 were sold out of an original approved mintage of 60,000. The unsold pieces were remelted. Pop 70; 2 finer in 68. (PCGS # 9357) .

1915-S Panama-Pacific Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. A frosty white gem with a touch of delicate electric blue and gold toning around the borders. This is a blemish-free example, satiny surfaces everywhere, with nice mint bloom. The strike is normal for the issue, as well, and highly revealing with the usual sharp flows on both sides into all areas of the die recesses. A two-man team worked cooperatively to design the Panama-Pacific International Exposition half dollar for 1915: Charles E. Barber designed the obverse while his able assistant, George T. Morgan, did the reverse (PCGS # 9357) .

1920 Pilgrim Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. Nice original toning. Silver cartwheel luster radiates from the surfaces of this attractive toned specimen. A great deal of discussion also surrounds a coin's strike when the grade gets to the gem 65 level. This beautiful 1920 Pilgrim has excellent detail, grand eye-appeal with no sign of weakness (PCGS # 9359) .

By 1920, the U.S. population reached 105,710,620. For the first time in U.S. history the farm population fell to less than 30%, a far cry from the days of the pioneering Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony.

1926 Sesquicentennial Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65 PQ. In PCGS holder 10416047. Spectacular gem! Superb multi-color toning on both sides. Monster color! A satiny superb gem with strong underlying luster from the dies that reinforce the beauty of the toning. Substantial detail to the highpoints on this fine example further expresses the astounding quality found on either side, with full definition (despite the lightly impressed die-design) on the dual portraits of Washington and Coolidge as well as for the Liberty bell.

Struck for sale at the Sesquicentennial Exposition held in Philadelphia June 1 to November 30, 1926. The obverse has conjoined busts of Washington and Calvin Coolidge, president at the time. Although it was then against policy to depict a living person on a United States coin (and still is, in spite of several recent lapses in following the law), this was overlooked when the president was given the shared spotlight with America's first chief executive. For the reverse, designer John R. Sinnock used the Liberty bell. This was the identical motif he would employ 22 years later when he composed the Franklin Half Dollar. Net mintage was 140,592, the issue price being $1. The Sesquicentennial coins, similar to many other commemorative issues, had also a corresponding U.S. stamp issued for the event. Gems are rare. Superb gems, decidedly so. And superb gems with gorgeous toning almost unheard-of! (PCGS # 9374) .
