Norse Medal Thick. PCGS graded MS-64. Well toned and lustrous. An engaging example of this medal. A medal, not a coin, this and related pieces in silver and gold were issued in connection with the Norse American Centennial in 1925. The promoters wanted a coin, but did not lobby their case with congress, not realizing that coins could be easily sold throughout the numismatic market, but medals would be less popular. Accordingly, a fair number or Norse commemoratives remained unsold for years afterward. Year by year they became more popular (PCGS # 9450) .
Estimated Value $200 - 250.

The kneeling female on the reverse with distaff and spindle is "emblematic of women's industry" explains the Guide Book of U.S. Coins (now a quait cliche in the world of the 21st century) (PCGS # 9220) .

1921 Alabama Half Dollar, no 2 x 2. NGC graded MS-65. A gem! The obverse displays lovely rose toning. The reverse is frosty white. Warm golden reddish with steel-blue and natural gray accents exhibit strong cartwheel luster flowing upwards. The satin, gem quality luster is what really engages the aesthetic sense with its serene beauty. Twenty-two stars underlying the overlapping portraits of Bibb and Kilby on the Alabama commemorative. This is the version without the "2X2" in the field at right. A scarce acquisition for any advanced collector of U.S. commemorative coins.

The Alabama commemoratives, designed by Laura Gardin Fraser, were offered first during President Harding's visit to Birmingham in October 1921.

1937 Antietam Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-67. Tab toning on the obverse. What is most noticeable when one first examines this coin is its thick mint luster underneath the amber-gold toning. It swirls from side-to-side unimpeded by noticeable abrasions and unscathed by even a hint of spotting. A coin of singular beauty and importance to the Commemoratives collector. The devices were struck with typical power by the dies that all design elements show boldly. Antietams are noted for their fine detail and artistic merit.

The Battle of Antietam (known as the Battle of Sharpsburg in the South), Sept. 17, 1862, is considered the bloodiest single day in the Civil War. To pay homage to the 75th anniversary of this battle, designer and sculptor William Marks Simpson depicted conjoined busts of the two generals who commanded the opposing forces in that battle, George B. McClellan (Union) and Robert E. Lee (Confederate). For the reverse, Simpson recreated the Burnside Bridge which was a strategic site in the battle. A total of 50,000 were authorized at $1.65 each, although only 18,000 were eventually sold, the remainder being melted.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,100.

Lot 1911
1937 Antietam Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-66. Delicately toned around the borders. A coin with a nice satiny appeal, silver toned surfaces appearing as when first struck taken from its issue card or envelope and submitted to PCGS for grading. The MS66 grade is confirmed by viewing this premium quality Gem. In addition to the fine luster, the coin displays impressive striking detail for an Antietam half dollar (all of which seem to have been carefully made). This is to say that the strike is full on the dual portraits of Generals McClellan and Lee, including those few hair strands over Lee's ear which on rare occasions keep this from a gem designation (PCGS # 9229) .

After pursuing Confederate General Robert E. Lee into Maryland, Union Army Major General George B. McClellan launched attacks against Lee's army, in defensive positions behind Antietam Creek in September 1862. Despite superiority of numbers, McClellan's attack failed to achieve much, resulting in a three-phase battle that Lee was able to counter by shifting forces to meet each challenge. Again, despite ample reserve forces that could have been deployed to exploit localized successes, McClellan failed to destroy Lee's army. The upshot was that Lee's plans were foiled and he withdraw his army back to Virginia without interference from the cautious McClellan. Historians rate the battle as tactically inconclusive.

1936-D Arkansas Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-67. Nice light golden toning on both sides. Smooth frosty luster on a well presented and fully struck example. Elusive as a Superb Gem and none better. Mintage: 9,660.

Struck to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the admission of Arkansas to the Union, June 15, 1836. Two Art Deco heads are Liberty and (evidently) a Quapaw Indian, the tribe that inhabited what would become the Territory of Arkansaw. Edward Everett Burr designed the piece along with the help of several others. Sets of three, one from each mint, were sold in 1935-39 at ever-escalating prices. There was active speculation in the issue at the time, along with the other P-D-S commemorative sets struck during the 1930s. Pop 17; none finer at PCGS (PCGS # 9238) .

1951-S Carver-Washington Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-67. Sea-green and golden hues on both sides. Conditionally rare, this important coin is at the top of the third-party grading scale for the issue. Both sides are richly toned in speckled cobalt-blue and medium-gold shades through which full, frosty mint luster shines at all angles. Exceptionally well preserved by the standards of this type, the surfaces are smooth and free of grade-limiting abrasions. A definite find for the advanced collector or investor who specializes in Commemorative coinage. To perpetuate the memories of these two prominent black Americans, the Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco Mints struck Carver/Washington Commemorative Half Dollars for four years from 1951 through 1954. The first-year 1951-S was produced to the extent of just 10,004 pieces and, like all issues of this type, it can be a very difficult coin to locate without numerous marks. Pop 8; 1 finer in 67 Star. (PCGS # 9432) .
