Peace Dollars

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1880
1921 Peace Dollar. NGC graded MS-65. Untoned. The silvery hue alternates between levels of frost and satin-texture on this first-year coin. Lustrous and well struck with pleasing surfaces; only a few marks in the hair and on the eagle's feathers. Struck with preciseness only now and then found, although we must defer to the experts when it comes to the normal softness found at the centers, particularly on the hair over the ear. It was the coin's unusually high relief that caused the mint to revise the design in time to strike the 1922 dated coins. Pop 853; 96 finer. (PCGS # 7356) .
Estimated Value $1,700 - 1,800.

Lot 1881
1922 Peace Dollar. NGC graded Proof 63 Satin, Low Relief. Very rare and seldom offered. NGC holder 1775281-001. The 1922 Satin finish Proof features the low relief, and the coin has no mint frost but instead is entirely reflective. Despite the low relief, this coin is very sharply struck, indeed remarkably so, and boasts extensive detail on the curls over Liberty's ear. Only 2 1922 Satin finish Proof silver dollars have been graded by NGC, none by PCGS, making this coin extremely rare. Breen noted that only 3 were known in his encyclopedia, and apparently none have been offered in some years at auction, with this particular specimen appearing in a Superior sale in January 2005. This coin has delicate gold toning on both sides, and because of its sharp strike, is obviously a Proof issue.Pop 1; 1 finer in 65.
Estimated Value $28,000 - 32,000.

Lot 1882
1922-S Peace Dollar. NGC graded MS-66. A frosty white gem. This otherwise readily available Peace dollar is a noteworthy condition rarity at or above the MS65 level of preservation. The majority of Mint State survivors from the 17.4 million-coin production are plagued by poor strike and usually many bagmarks. This lovely MS66 representative, however, is smooth in virtually all areas with detail that is as full as one could hope for in the issue. The frosty textured surfaces are vibrant with a pleasingly silvery sheen. A wonderful example of this date. Pop 10; none finer at NGC.
Estimated Value $6,000 - 7,000.

1926-S Peace Dollar. PCGS graded MS-66. Pristine frosty surfaces. A touch of light pastel toning. A mint-original nearly pristine Gem that has radiant blazing white color. Lustrous and sharply struck with top-quality fields. A blunt impression is often left by the recoil of the dies that struck this San Francisco Mint year's coinage usually noticed in weak hair waves over the ear and correspondingly weak wing feathers at the leg; just the same, we can report that this 1926-S blazer, unlike the others, is outstanding in its detail and sharpness. Pop 55; 2 in 67. (PCGS # 7369) .

1927-D Peace Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. A nice white gem example, outstanding for the grade. A one-in-a-thousand example of this Denver issue, with abundant swowy luster that shimmers over near pristine surfaces. Even the finest, most delicate detail seen on this Peace dollar, struck with uncommon exactness for the issue. Pop 108; 9 finer in 66. (PCGS # 7371) .

Lot 1887
1928-S Peace Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. Near immaculate satiny smooth luster with a hint of natural light rainbow toning surrounding the obverse borders. Peace dollar buyers are soon made aware that the '28-S may be more plentiful than its identically dated P-mint counterpart in an absolute sense, but because the typically offered survivor wins no awards for eye appeal, it is a daunting task to find one in Gem condition. Far finer than the usually encountered Mint State example, this lovely Gem neither lacks the luster nor is heavily abraded. Forsooth! both sides are extremely vibrant in the luster department with an enchanting frosty-textured surface that provides nice cartwheel effects. Uncleaned from top to bottom, the surfaces are free of all but a few stray abrasions like the little chattermark below Liberty's ear, limitations that are well within the parameters of the strict Mint State 65 designation. The strike is also praiseworthy for an S-mint Peace Dollar, while the detail is bold-to-sharp in all areas. A key condition rarity that could easily find its way into a PCGS Registry Set. Among the finest examples of this date. Pop 40; 1 finer in 66. (PCGS # 7374) .
Estimated Value $15,000 - 16,000.

Lot 1888
1928-S Peace Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. Satiny and with a hint of light lilac tone. A major rarity in such high grade. This is a truly exceptional representative of a conditionally challenging San Francisco Mint issue. Both sides are uncommonly well struck with bold-to-sharp detail characterizing all elements of the design. The surfaces are also carefully preserved with few abrasions and none that are worthy of singular concern. Fully lustrous with the lightest overlay of tannish-silver tinting, this rare Gem would serve as a pride and joy in the finest Peace Dollar set.

Along with the 1924-S and 1925-S, the 1928-S is one of the most difficult Peace Dollars to locate with strong eye appeal. Most of this 1.6 million-coin delivery possess unduly soft striking detail, and many are also sprinkled with detracting bagmarks. A Gem of this quality represents a significant find in today's market, and examples that grade at or above the Mint State 65 level are of the utmost rarity and desirability.

The influential former American Numismatic Association Historian Farran Zerbe is the man whom the credit for this beautiful Silver Dollar type goes. Zerbe did not design the Peace Dollar, but he did present a paper at the 1920 Chicago ANA Convention that called for a circulating coin to commemorate the return of peace after the end of World War I. Since silver dollar production resumed in 1921 pursuant to the terms of the Pittman Act, Zerbe's proposal came to realization through that denomination instead of a half dollar. Pop 40; 1 finer in 66. (PCGS # 7374) .
Estimated Value $15,000 - 16,000.

1928-S Peace Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. A nice white coin. Satiny silver surfaces with some expressive frosted highlights on the high points. A pleasing choice Uncirculated example of one of the more challenging yet popular Peace dollar issues in American numismatics. The only weak spot in the strike, and it is minor, is seen at the central hair and where the eagle's wing extends beyond the leg, a common characteristic of S-mint dates (PCGS # 7374) .

1935 Peace Dollar. NGC graded MS-65. Satiny white surfaces. We have handled few other 1935 Peace dollars, NGC graded or PCGS, that come up to the quality of this near-pristine example. Both sides are richly frosted with shimmering white luster. Furthermore, the strike is complete showing preciseness only now and then found on earlier Peace dollars in the series. A gorgeous Gem. 1935-S Peace Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. Nice original toning on both sides. Very special coin for the grade. The otherwise white luster (with sharp definition and only a few tiny marks) resides under original toning. A truly exceptional Gem to say the least. Liberty's face is particularly impressive inasmuch as it escaped contact with other coins in the bag. Pop 470; 104 finer. 102 in 66; 2 in 67. (PCGS # 7379) .
