Walking Liberty Half Dollars

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1480
1917-S Liberty Walking Half Dollar. Mint mark on reverse. PCGS graded MS-64. Frosty white example. A beauty, with nice original silvery color on lightly toned, virtually undisturbed surfaces free of tarnish. A unsuccessful strike was sometimes left by the rebound of the dies that coined this years' half dollars, but the features here are all above-average with the sole exception of Liberty's hand area, which is a trifle soft. There are one or two small marks on the eagle's body. A scarce issue from the San Francisco Mint. Pop 162; 41 finer. (PCGS # 6573) .
Estimated Value $3,600 - 3,900.

Lot 1481
1918-S Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. First generation holder. Lightly toned and choice. The holder is a little scratched but not the coin. A totally appealing and accurately graded late wartime coin showing exceptionally full detail, enriched by an abundance of subtly gleaming mint frost with a wisp of clearest golden brown at the rim adding increased visual appeal. This San Francisco date has long been recognized as elusive in Gem and rarely encountered in any of the higher ranks of Mint State. Pop 31; 2 finer; 1 in 66; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 6576) .

Note: A Walker that is more challenging to locate than the 1917-S Reverse, the 1918-S is a noteworthy condition rarity in grades at or above the AU level.
Estimated Value $12,000 - 14,000.

Lot 1482
1919-D Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-63. As usual, a trifle soft in the centers as made. A very choice, spinning-fresh MS63 example in which the surfaces spread light with smooth satin-like originality over both sides. This is a generally well-produced example with good details. It has no bothersome abrasions or points of wear but as is often the case, the dies left their partly rigid impression behind with some mild weakness or imprecision only at the hand and upper leg of Liberty, transferring over to the central region on the reverse where the eagle's leg lacks some feather detail. Again, the lustrous surfaces are quite clean for the grade. Lightly toned. Pop 42, 77 finer (PCGS # 6578) .
Estimated Value $15,000 - 17,000.

Lot 1483
1921-D Liberty Walking Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-63. Mostly untoned and a soft strike. Scarce and popular coin. A fresh pale silvery example of this elusive date with full luster present and enough eye appeal to attract bids from around the country. Just viewing it, words are pouring into our mind but the photographs (or the coin itself) should do the speaking. Such rarity and desirability in a walking Liberty half dollar almost makes a person lose the power of coherent thought! Pop 29; 83 finer.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 12,000.

Lot 1484
1921-S Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded AU-53. Problem-free, lightly toned. Still lustrous, attractive surfaces display natural old-silver iridescence and color, with the overall appearance greatly bolstered by residual luster. Regarding this date, the 1921-S is the most difficult date in the 1916-47 series to find in better grades. Most wore in circulation to the point where the usual specimen is no better than About Good or Good. Collectors may wait many months to find a choice About Uncirculated example like this. Mintage: 548,000. Pop 6 (PCGS # 6585) .
Estimated Value $6,000 - 6,500.

Lot 1485
1927-S Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. Old green holder. Better than average strike with excellent unmared surfaces. Frosty and white, in fact, fully original with gleaming silvery radiance. Meticulous strike on every device is what collectors look for in a walking Liberty half dollar of this vintage, but this coin doesn't quite make the "full" grade, nor do many other 1927-S halves. Just the same, the strike is much better than "representative," while the numerical condition is if anything too conservative, and obviously was carefully weighed by the grading service (PCGS # 6587) .
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,500.

Lot 1486
1928-S Liberty Walking Half Dollar. MS-60 Plus. Lightly toned with abundant luster over both surfaces and the strong wide rims that typify this S-mint release from 1928. San Francisco Mint was the only facility to strike half dollars this year (as it had been in 1923 and again in 1927). A scarce date.
Estimated Value $700 - 800.

1929-D Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. Old green holder. Nice strike with light original toning. A satiny and lustrous gem with a nuance of faint champagne to well-developed russet-gray on both sides. The strike is virtually complete, although perhaps a hint of weakness is seen at the hand where it meets Liberty's hip. Pop 167; 52 in 66; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 6589) .

Lot 1488
1933-S Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-66. Mostly white with a hint of gold toning. The satin-like luster is almost unimpaired by abrasions of any size. Devices were struck with the primary energy required to impart the design to the outer areas as well as enough vigor by the dies to impart clear-cut centers, unlike many dates of the 1920s decade. This is a well-known trait of the desirable 1933-S issue. Pop 69; 7 finer in 67. (PCGS # 6591) .

1938 Liberty Walking Half Dollar. NGC graded Proof 67. Nice untoned example. Fully radiant -- an important and rare feature for this desirable Walking Liberty issue -- the surfaces display metallic pearl-white color whose deep, smooth reflection is almost unnerving to view since so few superb 1938 half dollars exist. Crisp detail on all devices. A remarkable coin. 8,152 Proofs struck. Pop 226; 50 finer; 11 in 69 Star; 35 in 68; 4 in 68 Star. (PCGS # 6638) .

Lot 1492
1938-D Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. A frosty gem with just a hint of toning starting to form. With 491,600 mintage, the 1938-D has the lowest production in the 1930s. Both sides are remarkably lustrous with fresh silvery color and a spray of patina in the upper right hand quadrant. Possessed of a much finer strike than is typically found for a '38-D, only a portion of Liberty's hand shows lack of detail, while the eagle's leg (also a high point in the design) has much but not all of the feathers showing. Broad rims give a nice picture-frame quality around the inner design (PCGS # 6605) .
Estimated Value $1,200 - 1,300.

1939 Liberty Walking Half Dollar. NGC graded Proof 67. Nice white gem. The strike is complete, and the surfaces spot-free, hairline-free, and dazzling. 8,808 Proofs struck. Pop 301; 74 finer. (PCGS # 6639) .

1942 Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 66. Old green holder. Nice white coin. Sharply struck throughout with excellent silvery luster in the mirrors on both sides. A flatteringly attractive Gem Proof. Following years of denials that full-mirror Proofs were possible with the Walking Liberty half dollar, the Philadelphia Mint finally released these lovely sparkling coins in 1936 after a 20 year hiatus when no Proofs were sold to collectors. Upon America's entry into World War II, Proof issuance ceased in 1942. It would not be resurrected again until 1950, long after the Walking Liberty design had ended (PCGS # 6642) .
