Three Cent Pieces

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1076
1852 Silver Three Cents. PCGS graded MS-65. Old green holder. Mostly lightly toned and an agreeable state of preservation for this heavily circulated denomination. Lustrous throughout. Pop 150; 86 finer; 73 in 66; 11 in 67; 12 in 68. (PCGS # 3666) .

Proposed in a coinage law of 1851 was a silver 3 cent piece. It was to have the weight, proportionate to its 3 cent value, of 12 1/8 grains, but the proportion of pure silver was to be only 3/4 instead of 9/10. And it was to be a subsidiary coin, with a legal tender limit of 20 cents. The mint was to coin the pieces from its own bullion and sell them to the public, but only in exchange for foreign fractional silver coins, then still the predominant circulating medium.
Estimated Value $600 - 650.

Lot 1077
1856 Silver Three Cents. NGC graded MS-64. Nicely toned. Full russet-toned undisturbed mint luster that is spot-free and attractive. There is a bit of deep crimson toning on the reverse. A soft impact was left by the recoil of the likely imprecisely positioned dies that struck this scarce Type 2 coin, with resulting lack of detail along the lower margin affecting the date and several letters in UNITED and AMERICA. Pop 73; 18 finer; 14 in 65; 4 in 66. (PCGS # 3672) .
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,100.

Lot 1078
1861 Silver Three Cents. PCGS graded MS-67. A nice frosty white example. Lustrous fields ripple with original mint bloom. Against this are set nicely balanced, clear design elements. As we see it, when it comes to the centers of the shield as well as the outlines of the star, the strike is above-average, sharp, and well defined in all areas. On the reverse, as well, the simple C III design shows fully. There is a faint clash mark from the shield lines within the lower part of the Roman numeral. Superb Type 3 example. Pop 22; none finer at PCGS (PCGS # 3679) .
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,000.

1868 Silver Three Cents. NGC graded Proof 63. Gold and blue toning. A mirror smooth and lustrous Three-cent silver coin with a blend of iridescent colors on both sides that accents the choice quality. The contact from the dies is complete, without the least hint of weakness anywhere. The double-outline to the star that makes this the Type 3 design shows completely, while the shield lines and shield border are also bold. Proof mintage: 600 pieces (PCGS # 3718) .
Estimated Value $400 - 440.
