Lot 1022
1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent. NGC graded MS-64 Red. A blazing red '09-S of the choicest quality for its grade level. Intense cartwheel luster fairly leaps from the surfaces of this prize. One look at the present coin will satisfy your curiosity as to why the grading service has a reputation for strictness. Something perhaps worth pausing to study, too, is the fact that all devices were struck with the usual and desirable consistency of this year, that is, sharply by the dies, which then left behind bold elements of detail throughout (PCGS # 2428) .
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,300.

1909-S Lincoln Cent. S over horizontal S. PCGS graded MS-65 Red. A spotless full red gem. Brilliant copper red color still burns from the surface of this appealing '09-S Lincoln cent. Deficiency isn't in the cards, either, when it comes to this coin's strike, in fact, outstanding is the word to describe the detail on Lincoln's portrait and the two wheat ears. Pop 145; 33 finer in 66. (PCGS # 92434) .

1909-S Lincoln Cent. S over horizontal S. PCGS graded MS-64 Red & Brown. About 70% mint red intact makes this a choice example for the collector looking to purchase a fresh, uncleaned example of the San Francisco mint first year of issue. With the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln cent approaching, collectors are gearing up for the expected celebration. Pop 40; 14 finer; 13 in 65; 1 in 66. (PCGS # 92433) .

Lot 1028
1910 Lincoln Cent. PCGS graded Proof 65 Red & Brown. Well struck. The fiery-gold color is especially vibrant on this handsome, well-made Proof of the early period. Clockwork precision seen in the strike on the portrait features, Lincoln's hair and coat, as well as sharp relief on both wheat ears. Matte Proofs were struck in 1909-16. The types of coin designs in this period (Lincoln cent, Buffalo nickel, Mercury dime, etc.) did not permit the making of bright finish or brilliant Proof specimens. It seems that the face of the die touches almost every part of the planchet on the Victor D. Brenner cents, dulling the surface of even a polished blank. Proof coins of the series therefore were issued with a matte or sandblast finish. It wasn't until the 1930s that the mind developed a technique (still problematic) of creating polished mirror Proofs. A rare opportunity to acquire a fresh, nearly full red Gem of 1910. Pop 70; 60 finer. (PCGS # 3307) .

1911-D Lincoln Cent. PCGS graded MS-65 Red. Nice red example. A beautiful deep crimson red coin with no objectionable marks or blemishes and full coppery fire in the luster. A hint of weakness at the mintmark and on Lincoln's coat as typically seen for coins struck at this mint, although the other areas are generally strongly impressed by the dies. Pop 122; 16 finer; 15 in 66; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 2446) .

1912 Lincoln Cent. PCGS graded MS-66 Red. Nice red example. A blazing red gem of the finest order. Intense cartwheel luster fairly leaps from the surfaces of this prize Lincoln cent from 1912. One look at the present gem will satisfy your curiosity as to why few examples of the date has been certified finer than the present MS66. One would be hard put to find a more truly beautiful gem specimen of a popular issue with not even a smidgen of softness on the devices. Pop 59; 7 finer in 67. (PCGS # 2452) .

Lot 1033
1912-D Lincoln Cent. NGC graded MS-65 Red. Fiery red. Uncommonly well preserved for this scarce Denver Mint issue, both sides retain full mint bloom in shimmering medium-orange color. What's more, the coin is sharply struck on the obverse, with bold reverse definition despite having been struck from a slightly worn die. There are no grade-limiting blemishes, no spots, only explosive mint luster and color.

A semi key-date issue in the Lincoln Cent series, the 1912-D has a relatively low mintage of 10.4 million pieces. Examples are scarce at all levels of preservation, while in the finer circulated and Mint State grades they are nothing short of rare. Uncirculated survivors are frequently beleaguered by varying degrees of incompleteness due to die wear, so overall bold or, better yet, sharp examples are always in demand among leading Lincoln Cent buyers.

The first major type in the Lincoln Cent series is the Wheat Ears Reverse of 1909-1958. This portion of the series includes some of the most readily recognizable and popular 20th century United States coins, namely the 1909-S V.D.B., 1943 Copper and 1955 Doubled Die. All issues of this type enjoy a strong following among numismatic buyers; such is the popularity of the Lincoln Cent in today's rare coin market. While many of the Philadelphia Mint and later-date deliveries are easy enough to obtain through the MS-65 Red grade level, all issues of this type are rare in the finest Mint State grades. This is one series that has proved particularly popular among collectors competing for high rankings on the PCGS Set Registry, with the result that conditionally rare examples frequently command very strong premiums among buyers. Pop 24; 3 finer in 66. (PCGS # 2455) .

1917 Lincoln Cent. PCGS graded MS-66 Red. Fully red coin. A frosty, satiny gem with strong luster and a boldness throughout much of the reverse details. Moreover, the obverse weakness sometimes on certain dates is completely lacking here. The coin is struck with exactly the required mathematical precision by the dies in all areas, not just some.
