Indian Head Cents

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 976
1886 Indian Head Cent. Variety 1. PCGS graded MS-65 Red & Brown. With all the full red Indian Cents in the Chiro Collection, you would think a mere Red-Brown would stand out in a side-by-side comparison. However, this coin fits in perfectly well. This coin is actually full red on the obverse with a slight muting on the reverse. The strike is full and the eye appeal is exceptional. This coin will fit in well with your collection too.

The Type 1 issue is the design begun in 1864 (With L on Ribbon). Part of this design is a curious outline to all the letters. These "Extra Outlines" are seen on many of Longacre's designs. Sometime they do not show up on all letters, as in the case with this coin, which has outlines only on the UNI in UNITED. Either the die was not sunk deep enough during the hubbing process or the die was worn or abraded enough so that they disappeared. Pop 14; none finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 2155) .
Estimated Value $1,200 - 1,400.

Lot 977
1886 Indian Head Cent. Variety 2. PCGS graded MS-65 Red & Brown. This coin is fully struck and early die state, which means the details are super sharp. There are hardly any marks at all and the eye appeal is outstanding. The color is closer to brown than red but the evenness of the tone adds considerably to its beauty. The 1886 is overall, a tougher date, but the Type 2 has been found to be much scarcer than the Type 1.

The 1886 Type 2 is redesign by Charles Barber. The main difference is a slight narrowing of the width of the portrait. The last feather now points between the CA in AMERICA. The extra outlines found on earlier issues are no longer present from this date forward. Pop 14; none finer at PCGS (PCGS # 92155) .
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,500.

1908-S Indian Head Cent. PCGS graded MS-65 Red. This is a bright beautiful example of this tough and popular date. The strike is full and the fields are prooflike! This is a simply outstanding piece.

This is the first year of any minor coins being minted at the San Francisco Mint. The need for small change was necessitated partly because the trolley line wanted to increase its fare from 5¢ to 6¢. Since only silver and gold coins were in circulation, and the lowest denomination was the silver Half-Dime, last minted in 1873, there was beginning to be a real need for small change in that city. Pop 185; 32 finer in 66. (PCGS # 2234) .
