1816 Coronet Head Cent. . N-1, R4+. Fine-15. Five points sharper with traces of extremely fine roughness on both sides and specks of shallow verdigris in a few places, mostly around NITED. Mostly glossy chocolate brown with wisps of darker olive toning on the obverse. MDS showing crumbling in the dentils at stars 8-11 and a faint crack through the tops of NITED.

1816 Coronet Head Cent. . N-2, R1. MS-60. Frosty light golden steel brown with underlying mint luster covering the fields and some bluish steel overtone on the right side of the obverse. No spots or notable contact marks. MDS with the reverse rotated 45 degrees CW from a normal head-to-foot die orientation. Bluntly struck on the forelock, as usual, but everything else is sharp Most likely from the famous Randall Hoard of mint state cents.

Late die state with some reeding on the edge at stars 4-6 (as sometimes found on this variety).

  Pair of 1816 N-8 R3, both grading F12. The first is early die state before any rim cud breaks on the obverse and the reverse rotated 35 degrees CCW. The second is MDS with a single rim cud break at stars 11-12 and the reverse rotated 20 degrees CCW. Both are an attractive glossy chocolate brown. Lot of 2 coins.

A light rim bruise at star 12 is the only significant mark. Slightly glossy dark chocolate with steel brown highpoints. EDS. Double struck, but the offset between impressions is small, no more than a half millimeter. The doubling is obvious on both sides, but only with the aid of a glass. The date and legends are complete and clear.

Includes N-3 R2 in VG8 M-LDS with only the left end of the mouse break on top of the head, N-8 R2 in G6 M-LDS with only the tiny left end of the "finger mouse" extending from the top of the head, and N-9 R2 in F15 M-LDS with a shallow depression resting on top of the head where the mouse break is about to form. The last is choice glossy brown while the other two are slightly sharper with defects. All very interesting later die states. Lot of 3 coins.

The reverse is slightly misaligned to K-1 causing some weakness at OF, but everything remains complete and easily readable. Listed as finest known of the "no mouse" die state in the Noyes census, his photo #31651.

This "mouse" closely resembles its namesake, with the head to the left and body to the right, plus a tiny tail trailing behind.

Both sides are sprinkled with small spots of dark toning, especially at the bottom of the reverse. A spot of reddish roughness at the dentils right of the F in OF is the most significant mark. LDS. Most likely from the famous Randall Hoard of mint state cents discovered shortly following the US Civil War. EAC grade MS60.
