(Hawaii - Kamehameha III & C. Brewer & Co.). Royal Patent No. 789. Contemporary certified copy of a transaction with Charles Brewer relative to a Fort Street lot, 1½pp, 12½x8", Honolulu, 15 June, 1852. Document contains a detailed description of the location of the lot and includes a blind stamp showing "Capitol Building & Congress." Secretarial signatures for Kamehameha III and Keoni Ana. Keoni Ana (John Young II) was the son of John Young and the chiefess Kaonaeha. He succeeded Kekauluoki as Prime Minister (1845-54) and also served at various times as governor of Maui, Minister of the Interior and as a justice of the Supreme Court. Charles Brewer (1804-85) descended from a Brahmin Boston family with roots back to the Mayflower. He founded C. Brewer & Co., Ltd., the oldest surviving company in Hawaii and one of The Big Five that controlled Hawaii's economy unti the 1950s.

Contemporary copy of a transaction with Charles Brewer about Hotel Street land owned by Brewer exchanged for "Lot No. 1," a Fort Street lot owned by the government, 4pp, 12½x8", Honolulu, 20 Apr., 1860. Page 2 has a handdrawn map in fine pen. Document contains a detailed description of the location of the government-owned lot. Includes a blind stamp showing "Capitol Building & Congress." (Hawaii - Kamehameha III) 1897 Rare Republic of Hawaii Land Grant. Partly-printed contemporary certified copy of Royal Patent No. 757 (Palapala Sila Nui. Helu 757), in Hawaiian, 2pp (2 conjoined sheets), 16x10", Honolulu, 6 Sept. 1897. Very good; some insect damage, affecting two lines of text and some blank areas. A grant to Miguel Castro, signed by J.A. King as Minister of the Interior, with large red wax seal of the Republic; King Kamehameha III had signed the original document in 1852. James A. King was a pioneer inter-island shipping magnate who was appointed by Sanford B. Dole as Minister of the Interior in the Provisional Government and then to the same position in the Republic of Hawaii. He was the father of delegate-to-Congress and later governor Samuel Wilder King and the grandfather of federal judge Samuel P. King. Anthony Robinson's name is on the docket. The Robinson family was owner of Niihau island and a large part of Kauai. A rare Republic of Hawaii land grant.

(Hawaii) 1851 Oahu Land Warranty Deed. Partly-printed official document in both English and Hawaiian, 3pp, 12½x8¼", Honolulu, 15 May 1851. Very good; light toning and a couple of fold tears. A transaction between Oral R. Wood and Mr. and Mrs. Kekaulahao relative to land at Nuuanu, Honolulu, Hawaii. Signed by Kekaulahao, his wife Marie, N.A. Cooper (as Deputy Registrar of Conveyances), and R.W. Meyer (as witness). A royal stamp is present, consisting of a crown encircled with "Hoailona Pai O Ke Alii Royal Stamp."

Document acknowledging receipt of $3,250.00 by Oral Woods, previously a resident of Honolulu, but currently residing in New Bedford, Mass., from Richard Coady for the purchase of their house and lot in Nuuanu Valley, 4 pp, 12½x8, Boston and Honolulu. Oral and Ann Wood signed with their red seals on 8 Sept., 1858; the Boston notary public signed with a large red wax seal on page 2. Page 3 was signed by Coady in Honolulu on 5 April. S.A. Baldwin signed the docket. Fine.

"Hoike A Charles Blake Lunakanawai Apanoo Koloa Mokupuni O Kauai Na Hana Kivila" (Report of Charles Blake: Court Document - Civil Business) signed by Charles Blake as District Magistrate of Koloa, 1page folded, 14x17", 30 June 1898. Very good; overall toning and several fold splits, most on blank lower portion. Blake reports on five cases of civil litigation involving the Koloa Sugar Company in Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii from April 1, 1898 to June 30, 1898.

(Hawaii) Sanford B. Dole (1844-1926) Elected president of the Provisional Government after the monarchy was overturned in 1893; appointed first governor of the Territory of Hawaii. Partly printed Document Signed as Governor, 4 pp, 16x10½", Kona, 24 Mar. 1902. Countersigned by Edward Boyd as Commissioner of Public Lands. Fine. Land Patent No. 4588 granting approximately 1,000 acres to William C. Achi for land at Honomalino, South Kona, Island of Hawaii. There are references to adjoining properties of J.M. Monsarrat, J. Kuahau, the Old Government Road and the Shoreline. Page 1 has a cancelled $1.00 Hawaiian government duty stamp.Pages 2 and 3 have a partially colored 2 page map. Signature page bears the Great Seal of the Territory. William Achi was a lawyer and great, great grandson of Puou, one of the warriors of Kamehameha I. J.J. Monsarrat was a lawyer who drew up the wills of Queen Dowager Emma and of Princess Miriam Likelike.

(Hawaii) Kamehameha III Royal Patent No. 418 - 1851 (1814-54) He became king (1824-54) after his brother, King Liholiho, died from measles while visiting London. His mother, Queen Kaahumanu, served as his regent until her death in 1832; under her influence, he became a Christian and banned many Hawaiian traditions and practices. He reigned longer than any other Hawaiian king.

Partly printed bi-lingual Royal Patent No. 418 signed "Kamehameha" twice as King, once on page 2 on the Hawaiian language portion and once on page 4 on the English translation, 4pp, 13x8¼", 2 September 1851. Countersigned twice by Keoni Ana. Very good; light toning and seal transfer. Regarding a transfer of land at Nunanu, Honolulu that was bought by Oral R. Wood from Luli. The document has two royal seals.

Partly printed bi-lingual Royal Patent No. 1326 signed "Kamehameha" as King nine months before his death (15 Dec. 1854), 4pp, 14x8½", Honolulu, 21 Mar., 1854. Countersigned by Keoni Ana. Very good; light toning and seal transfer. The document has the royal seal. A transaction with Peter J. Gulick relative to land at Mokuleia, Waialua, Oahu, Hawaii. Peter Johnson Gulick was an early missionary and father to Orramel H. Gulick and John Thomas Gulick; he was also uncle to Charles T. Gulick. Keoni Ana (John Young II) was the son of John Young and the chiefess Kaonaeha. He succeeded Kekauluoki as Prime Minister (1845-54) and also served at various times as governor of Maui, Minister of the Interior and as a justice of the Supreme Court.

Autograph Letter Signed as Governor of the Territory of Hawaii, 1 p, 9½x6", on Park Avenue Hotel, New York stationery, 9 May 1902., responding to a gentleman who had inquired if soldiers in Honolulu would like to get U.S. newspapers. In part: "There is a battalion of U.S. soldiers stationed there….The address would be Camp McKinley Honolulu, Hawaii…."

(Hawaii) Silver Royal Society's Captain Cook Memorial Medal - 1784. London, Royal Society, by Lewis Pingo, chief engraver of the Royal Mint.; Betts #553, M.H. #374, 42mm. Very fine. One of 291 struck. Showing a fine, left-facing bust of Captain James Cook, explorer, surveyor and globe circumnavigator, in Naval uniform. The legend around states: "Oceani Investigator Acerrimvs" [The Most Intrepid Investigator of the Seas]; the reverse shows the personified figure of Fortune holding a Naval rudder atop of a globe, with the legend: "Nil Intentatvm Nostri Liquere" [Our Men Have Left Nothing Un-attempted]. Cook was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society after he had twice circumnavigated the globe (1768-71 and 1772-75). He left on his third voyage in 1776 and was murdered by natives in the Sandwich Islands in 1779. The Royal Society issued this tribute medal in 1784 and struck 19 examples in gold, 291 in silver, of which this is one, and 574 bronzed copper medals. They sold for a guinea or two each. The gold specimen given to Cook's widow is now in the British Museum. The portrait was copied by John Flaxman when designing the well-known Wedgwood jasperware plaquette. The medal is illustrated by C. Wyllis Betts, American Colonial History, illustrated by Contemporary Medals, number 553.

(Hawaii) 1850 Hawaiian Language Receipt From the Governor of Oahu. Receipt for $150.00 from O.R. Wood signed by M. Kekuanaoa, who was the patriarch of an old and extremely influential Hawaiian family and who served as Governor of Oahu under Kamehameha III in the 1830s, 1 p., 10½x8½", Honolulu, 4 Sept. 1850. Also signed by S.A. Baldwin on the docket. Very good; scattered foxing and contemporary ink smears; royal blind stamp seal at upper left. Written entirely in Hawaiian, the document refers to William L. Lee, the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Manuscript documents and autographs from Kekuanaoa are extremely rare and choice.

Montgomery certifies that there were no encumberances on the house and land in Nuuanu Valley that Oral R. Wood and Ann M. Wood sold to Richard Coady. Signed on the docket by S.A. Baldwin, whose grandparents were early missionaries to the Hawaiian Islands and who was a rancher in Makawao, Maui, Territory of Hawaii beginning in 1915.
