A very attractive example of an avidly collected denomination. Only the lightest hint of wear, and original luster is still to be found around much of the design. About Uncirculated.

Lot 3718
Great Britain. Sovereign, 1825. S.3801; Wilson and Rasmussen-235 (Rarity 5 - only 6 to 10 specimens known). George IV, 1820-1830. William Wyon (after Chantrey)'s bare head of King facing left, date below. Reverse: Crowned shield by Johann B. Merlen. Edge reeded or milled. Extremely rare, and indeed much rarer than the 1826 Proof Sovereign of which over 300 pieces were reportedly made. This specimen has a light orange/red peripheral tone and beautifully frosted design. The Terner collection 1825 Proof Sovereign fetched (lot 275, Goldberg sale 26 May 2003) over £10,000. NGC graded Proof 63 Ultra Cameo.

Lot 3720
Great Britain. Sovereign, 1830. George IV. Chantry's bare head of King. Reverse: Crowned shield. Struck in the year of the King's death or maybe even in the opening months of the reign of William IV, this is a slightly scarcer date. A nice lustrous quality and lots of eye appeal. NGC graded AU-55.
Estimated Value $1,200 - 1,400.

Lot 3722
Great Britain. Proof Sovereign, 1831. S.3829; Fr-383a; KM-717; Wilson and Rasmussen-261 (Rarity 3). William IV, 1830-1837. Head of King facing right. WW incuse on truncation. Reverse: Crowned ornate garnished shield. Date below. Edge: Plain. As issued in the 1831 Proof set. A rare sovereign from one of the shorter reigns in British history. In the last few years all British Sovereigns of the 19th century have been eagerly bought up by collectors, leading to a substantial price firming. NGC graded Proof 60.
Estimated Value $4,400 - 5,000.

Lot 3724
Great Britain. Proof 'Una & Lion' Gold 5 pounds, 1839. S.3851; Fr-386; KM-742. Victoria. Young Head. Produced by the great 19th-century coin engraver William Wyon, this is among the most famous and desirable of British coins. The obverse design features a young bust of Victoria aged 20 years, while the reverse has the Queen dressed as Una leading the British lion. This gorgeous specimen is remarkably free from scuffs and has a very minimum amount of the hairlines that other examples of this rare coin fall victim to, and the cameo effect of the detailed design is unusual. NGC graded Proof 63 Ultra Cameo.
Estimated Value $40,000 - 45,000.

Great Britain. Proof Half Sovereign, 1839. S.3859. Plain edge. Medal-die axis. Victoria. Mintage unknown but about 300 pieces, all for the Coronation sets of this year. These Proofs are all graced by the more elegant, thinner, so-called First Head, showing Victoria as a mere girl of 20 when this coin was struck. A delightful coin with great eye appeal. Very Scarce. NGC graded Proof 63 Ultra Cameo.

Great Britain. Sovereign, 1871. S.3853B; Fr-387i; KM-736.2. Victoria. London mint. Die number 31. Young portrait of Queen with hair in 'bun', facing left. Reverse: Crowned shield. This is the first of three exquisite gold sovereigns, each bearing the same die number, and obviously kept together as a group of (mint state) mementos for the last 135 years! Probably put away by a mint employee or given as a group to a visiting dignitary. Certainly an unusual find. NGC graded MS-63.

Great Britain. Sovereign, 1893. S.3874; Fr-396a; KM-785. Victoria. Mintage of only 773 pieces. Old Head of Queen. Reverse: St. George slaying dragon. Date in exergue. A brilliant specimen with a mellow gold peripheral toning. Deceptively rare in this grade. The coin was issued, in relatively small numbers, in the Proof set issue in 1893 to mark the first year of the Old Head coinage. Many of the Sovereigns were put into circulation, and there are more mishandle examples available than high quality specimens. NGC graded Proof 63 Ultra Cameo.

Issued in relatively small numbers for the coronation of King George V, 1911 was the only year when this denomination was issued during a 26 year reign!
