Morgan Dollars 1886-1893

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 3125
1890 Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 67 Cameo. Blue and gold toning with the centers white. Only 650 proofs struck. The stupendous example offered here not only shatters the normally seen striking woes, but its sparkling surfaces border on perfection underneath the heavenly toning. In fact, we can state confidently that this piece must have been retained in original Mint-issue Proof coin tissue paper for the better part of a century to have acquired its resplendent "spotlight" toning. Struck with systematic exactness throughout, and typical for these well-made Proofs of 1890, there is no need to focus on the central part of the hair and eagle's breast where a somewhat rounded impression is often left by the dies. This coin is decidedly bold, crisp, and fully detailed in these key areas, as elsewhere. A stellar offering! Pop 4; 1 finer in 68. (PCGS # 87325) .
Estimated Value $8,500 - 9,500.

Lot 3126
1890 Morgan Dollar. NGC graded Proof 66 Cameo. Lovely toning on both sides. An appealing fresh spot-light toned specimen, fully struck, and unmarred by discoloration or contact marks. An immaculate silver dollar. Quite difficult to encounter in this nice a grade showing full watery mirrors. About as razor-sharp as these are apt to be found, with just terrific detail in the hair, cap and eagle. Any sharper and a buyer would be forced to wear protective leather gloves! 590 proofs minted. Pop 23; 14 finer. (PCGS # 7325) .

Lot 3127
1890 Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 65. Lovely gold, blue and lilac toning on both sides. Only 590 proofs struck. This piece displays attractive surfaces and razor-sharp detail over the abrasion-free surfaces and is one of the more charming (and originally toned) Morgan dollar Proofs we have been privileged to offer. A coin in its prime, as it were, and fortune has the habit of making such a coin disappear at once when it comes up for sale in a single evening. Better act swiftly. Pop 19; 24 finer; 14 in 66; 10 in 67. (PCGS # 7325) .

1890-CC Morgan Dollar. NGC graded MS-65. White with semi reflective surfaces. Frosty fields are usually seen on this date, but a few, a blessed few, substitute the cartwheel luster with nice prooflike evidences. The more matte designs of Liberty and the eagle stand out nicely against this brilliance. No toning, just silver-white color. Pop 53; 2 finer in 66. (PCGS # 7198) .

1890-CC Morgan Dollar. NGC graded MS-64 Deep Prooflike. Lightly toned around the edges. Unsurpassable in terms of surface preservation for the much scarcer CC-mint issue of 1890, both sides are thickly frosted on the devices, mirror-smooth in the fields, and essentially tone-free except at the margins, as noted. Any collection of Carson City Mint dates will be nominally ruled over by this handsome deep prooflike specimen like a king in his castle. Pop 116; 7 finer in 65.

1890-O Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. Mostly white. There is much to say about the beautiful surfaces of this 1890-O silver dollar since they are far nicer than average, a quality rarely offered. The mint frost seems to glow with intensity over each side. There is just a bit of light patina as well. A solidly graded, premium quality Gem, this coin also displays impressive striking definition for a Silver Dollar from this branch mint. Pop 329; 18 in 66. (PCGS # 7200) .

1890-S Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-66. Light mottled russet toning about the borders. Lustrous fields wave and undulate with original mint bloom. 1891 Morgan Dollar. NGC graded Proof 67 Cameo. Snow white super gem! Elusive and quite costly as a Gem Proof, this superb example is free of noticeable hairlines and has flashy fields surrounding the cameo devices. The strike, the coin's most desirable feature, is 100% complete. Even for the generally well made Proofs, this piece is far ahead of others that may be marketed in the future. We're sure that the many bidders who miss out on this attractive coin will glace from heaven to earth, from earth to heaven after the bidding is over, and then wonder why they didn't post a stronger bid on it. Only 650 proofs minted. Pop 11; 2 finer.; 1 in 68; 1 in 68 Star. (PCGS # 7326) .

1891 Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. A nice white coin. Very scarce in this exciting Gem grade. A satiny P-mint coin with strong fundamental luster, full and swirling. Nicely struck, and more than a little so -- in fact, close enough to full where strong emphasis is merited. Indeed, the strike of the present 1891 easily rivals that of a high grade specimen. Pop 82; 3 finer; 2 in 66; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 7204) .

Lot 3146
1891-CC Morgan Dollar. NGC graded MS-65. White and semi reflective. A radiant example, fully struck with silver color that rises and falls in an almost rhythmic display. A fair number of baggy Unc. 1891-CC dollars got released when the U.S. Treasury Department opened its vaults for public sale back in the 1950s and 1960s. Others were offered in the GSA sales of the early 1970s. But of the thousands of low-end survivors, the high end coins have very low population, as these statistics reveal: Pop 109; 9 finer; 8 in 66; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 7206) .

1892 Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 66 Cameo. A nice white coin. Bright and lustrous pale yellow gold with some deeper accents in the sheltered regions within the devices. A high quality quarter eagle from the second year of Charlotte Mint coinage operations, and the last of two years in which the obverse mintmark is placed on the obverse; the mintmark was moved to the reverse of the denomination in 1840 with the introduction of Gobrecht's coronet head of Liberty, where it remained through the end of the denomination in 1929. Most 1839-C quarter eagles show some recutting at the 9, with some arguing for a 9/8 overdate and others pointing to 9/9 as the true variety. Winter lists both varieties in his comprehensive tome on the series. Regardless of its variety attribution, we are met with a lively and lustrous Mint State example of one of the most desirable of all Classic Head branch mint gold issues. The slightly increased total of 1,245 Proofs minted is attributed to the introduction of the Barber coins this year, occasioning sales to one-time buyers. Pop 8; 2 finer in 68. (PCGS # 87327) .
