Morgan Dollars 1886-1893

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 3075
1886 Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 66. A hint of light golden toning around the edges. Both sides put on view the distinctive "look" for this Philadelphia Mint Proof delivery: smoothly frosted devices, rolling mirror effects that are nice and "watery", with boldly struck devices. There is nothing timid about this one. The devices were struck with such force and energy by the dies that all design elements show boldly. Only 886 proofs struck. Pop 12; 3 in 67. (PCGS # 7321) .
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.

Lot 3076
1886 Morgan Dollar. NGC graded Proof 66. Lovely rainbow toning. Intense mirror reflection graces the smooth original surfaces of this attractively toned gem. A blend of light blue, rose, and faint gold graces both sides with other colors too numerous to list. The strike is razor-sharp on the reverse, just as sharp on Liberty, and as expected for a well maintained Gem Proof, everything about the coin gives it an elite quality destined for a high-end set of dollars. 886 proofs minted. Pop 27; 9 finer in 67. (PCGS # 7321) .

1886-O Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-63. Frosty with light gold toning. A brilliant coin with frosty luster and original toning, virtually three-dimensional, as it appears to be stretching out at the viewer. A scarce New Orleans issue, also! Beyond that, the striking is more sharp than many higher-grade specimens certified, everything comes together to yield an opportunity that should be quite advantageous to the silver dollar collector. Pop 407; 173 in 64; 3 in 65. (PCGS # 7168) .

1886-O Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-62. Mostly untoned. Satiny white luster covers the fields of this handsome coin. Struck with exactitude rarely found on a New Orleans Mint 1886, a date that for some reason tended to be more softly struck than in prior years. Very difficult date to find in high grade (PCGS # 7168) .

1888-O Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-66. Delicate golden toning around the borders. Likely an early strike from fresh dies, judging from the details. The surfaces are satin smooth. This mint's quality control weakened greatly in 1886-87, improved again with this 1888-O issue, and then declined once more for 1889-1897. An opportunity for the silver dollar collector that should not be overlooked. Pop 145; none finer. (PCGS # 7184) .
