Morgan Dollars 1881-1885

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 3035
1884-S Morgan Dollar. ANACS graded MS-60. Nice strike and mostly untoned. Scarce date in mint state grades. In spite of its mintage, this issue has long been known for its scarcity in Mint State. With 3.2 millions pieces coined, someone would think a bag or two might exist, or have existed at one time, but that seems not to be the case. The total number of Uncirculated specimens reported is low based on the mintage; and it has been said that not even a single original roll has been documented. Morgan dollar collectors often must wait months before finding a full Mint State specimen like this (PCGS # 7156) .
Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,400.

1885-CC Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-66. White and frosty. One would be hard pressed to locate a more pristine '85-CC in this grade. The richly frosted, icy white surfaces seem like a blizzard of unimpeded mint luster. With regard to strike, even the finest, most delicate detail is seen on this coin struck with uncommon exactness for the issue; were it only possibly for all the design to be as sharp as the lettering and outer areas on all such silver dollars, but that isn't usual for this date. Pop 744; 37 finer. (PCGS # 7160) .
Estimated Value $1,400 - 1,500.

1885-CC Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64 Deep Mirror Prooflike. Mostly untoned. The surrounding surface is nicely reflective. The devices, coated in frost from the way the (possibly new) dies were prepared for striking. And "striking" as in strikingly-attractive, is the defining term here (PCGS # 97161) .

Lot 3049
1885-CC Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64 Deep Mirror Prooflike. Untoned. We have handled a fair number of prooflike CC-mint Morgans, business strikes of the 1885-CC however, tend to come frosty rather than prooflike; few come close to visual beauty of this handsome MS64 example. Both sides are richly frosted with pearl white luster on the devices. The strike is complete, and the surfaces radiate swirling cartwheel effects with at most a few random bagmarks accounting for the 64 grade and not something higher. Pop 413; 284 finer. (PCGS # 97161) .

1885-O Morgan Dollar. NGC graded MS-68. Frosty and blast white. Sleek iridescent in surface preservation without a hint of toning. Particularly good work was being done by the mint at New Orleans in the early years of the 1880s, the so-called "Mauve Decade" in U.S. history. But after 1885, the year of this silver dollar, quality control lagged and frosty gems became a thing of the past. Go with this beautiful MS68 and never fret about having to upgrade in the future. Pop 9; none finer. (PCGS # 7162) .
