Morgan Dollars 1878-1880

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 2854
1878 Morgan Dollar. 8 tail feathers. NGC graded Proof 66. Lovely toning. Lustrous, mint-frosty devices (light cameo effect, not enough to list discretely on the holder) put on a show with their rich amethyst and sky blue flickering mirrors, the overall form of this Proof greatly improved by the smooth gleam off the fields. Nothing dull about this charismatic silver dollar! Regarding this date, it is the first year of issue, the first of 3 distinct varieties, with the 8 Tail Feathers being abnormally scarce in Proof due to its low mintage. 500 proofs minted. Pop 4; 4 finer in 67. (PCGS # 7311) .
Estimated Value $6,000 - 7,000.

1879 Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 66 Cameo. A beauty. This conditionally rare offering is fully brilliant with richly frosted devices offsetting the mirror slickness in the fields. What a joyous thing it is to examine and catalog for you! The strike is generally free of criticism, how could it be otherwise? Being sharp in all areas, the cameo devices stand out in sharp relief. Just studying it for a minute or two allows a person to soak up its beauty, historic underpinnings, and significance as to the Proof 66 Cameo grade.1,100 coins minted. 1879-CC Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. Mostly untoned. A lustrous example of this scarce 1879 Carson City Mint dollar that has rich frosty white luster with somewhat contrasting characteristics between the heavy frost on the portrait and eagle against slightly mirror-like fields. Generous detail to the highpoints on this fine example, with a thorough and effectual imprint from the dies; there are no soft areas left by the recoil of the dies as sometimes occurs, none whatsoever. Pop 602; 68 finer. (PCGS # 7086) .

1879-CC Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. Popular key date. A lovely coin. An ever-popular CC-mint issue, the present example is certainly well cared for and meets the exacting standards for the assigned grade. Richly frosted, as are many high quality Morgan dollars from the Carson City Mint, this is a forthright example of a semi-key date. The lightest blush of toning is seen on both sides, and the luster is bright, bold, careening throughout and with a desirable clear mintmark. Minimally abraded, and an important survivor from an original mintage of just 756,000 coins. Pop 623; 66 finer. (PCGS # 7086) .
Estimated Value $8,500 - 9,000.

Lot 2885
1879-CC Morgan Dollar. NGC graded MS-64 Deep Prooflike. The satin surfaces ripple with original luster. The coin is untoned and silvery. The only contact marks appear on the eyebrow of Liberty. Far from the normal example of this scarce CC-mint issue is the respectable amount of detail throughout with no signs of weakness to the chest feathers on the eagle. Read this description over, study the coin or the coin's photograph, place your catalog aside, and then take in a deep breath of air before arriving at a fair market bid, one that won't be checked by the other bidders in the sale, one with enough force behind it to vanquish all challengers for its ownership. Pop 11; 1 finer in 65. (PCGS # 97087) .

Lot 2886
1879-CC Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-63. Popular key date. Toned. Perfect dies with clear mintmark. Fully lustrous with nice definition and a light natural color on both sides. One of the key Carson City issues and a date that always commands attention in choice Mint State condition. Just 756,000 coins were delivered, and the sales by the General Services Administration in the early 'seventies resulted in the appearance of only 4,123 examples. These coins, like most other '79-CC dollars at the Mint State level, graded predominantly MS60-62. On the other hand, the coin that we are offering here is more than smooth enough to justify the Choice BU designation (PCGS # 7086) .

1879-CC Morgan Dollar. Capped die. PCGS graded MS-60. A nice white frosty coin. A lustrous example that has dazzling snowy brilliance and the usual bagmarks. Clear-cut devices point also to it having been giving a full, clear blow by the dies. Weakness often occurs at a few central locations on most of this scarcer CC-mint issue, but not on this handsome coin. Looks a little undergraded if anything (PCGS # 7088) .

1880 Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 64 Cameo. Lovely golden toning on both sides with shades of deep purple and steel blue in areas. Only 1,355 proofs struck. Outstanding crisp luster across the radiant mirror surfaces, plus characteristic two-tone effect thrown off by the raised, nicely frosted head of Liberty and eagle. An excellent pick for a collector's Type Set. The marvelous, intricate design of the Morgan dollar is by the Mint's long-time second-in-command, George T. Morgan, who came to the United States from England in 1876 and was hired as an assistant engraver at the Mint in October of that year. Morgan retained his status as second fiddle until the death of the Chief Engraver (Barber) in 1917. Morgan lived on until 1925, one of the longest career employees yet seen at the Mint. Pop 21; 29 finer; 7 in 65; 13 in 66; 7 in 67; 2 in 68. (PCGS # 87315) .

1880 Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 64. Bluish toning. A high degree of mirror freshness distinguishes the choice toned surfaces from others of the date which are less pulsating even though in technically similar grade. Collectors familiar with the series will recognize this difference at once and prefer this sort of toning over less robust colors (often dullish gray or brown). 1,355 proofs minted. Pop 89; 99 finer. A beautiful silver-bright coin with no objectionable marks or blemishes; the "reverse of 1879" is the second one introduced during the early years when the design was still evolving slowly. The eagle's breast is more rounded than before, and the arrow feathers have an entirely different shape than on the "reverse of 1878" coins found on some of the 1880-CC strikes.
