Lot 2837
1874 Trade Dollar. NGC graded Proof 64 Cameo. A hint of light golden toning. Only 700 proofs issued. A highly lustrous Trade dollar that has rich golden patina, strong cameo contrast, and a razor sharp strike. Only minimal hairlines found with the aid of a magnifying glass.

Proofs were struck to the extent of 700 coins. In December there were an 50 minted (included in the total given). It was customary in December to strike a few additional pieces to keep on hand until the end of the year. Typically, on January 1st of the following year a small supply of Proofs was in inventory. Sometimes these were wholesaled to Philadelphia and New York dealers for face value. However, on January 9, 1875, 175 unsold Proofs were released for face value and, presumably, went to coin dealers. Some, possibly all, 1874 Proofs have bold, wide rims. Apparently, most were sold as part of 1874 silver Proof sets, and deliveries by months match other silver Proof coins of the year. Pop 12; 6 finer. 5 in 65; 1 in 66.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,500.

Lot 2838
1874 Trade Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 64 Cameo. A nice white coin. Only 700 proofs struck. This fully struck near-Gem has glowing icy white devices, reflective fields all around, and no problems on either side. Very elusive in Proof 64 cameo quality and with intact mint color and mirrors. This is a generally well-struck date with good details, but as is occasionally the case, the dies left their partly rigid impression behind with some modest weakness or imprecision only at the right leg and talon on the eagle (the chief raised area of the design on that side of the coin). Pop 8; 3 finer; 2 in 65; 1 in 66. (PCGS # 87054) .

Lot 2840
1876 Trade Dollar. NGC graded Proof 65. Nice even toning on both sides. Only 1,150 proofs struck. This conditionally rare contribution to the Trade dollar section is sharp and mirror deep with rich frosty devices surrounded by pools of mirror reflection. The strike is free of censure, being sharp in all areas including the key high points of the design, and all stars and letters. Mintage increased somewhat in 1876 over 1875 and before falling back again in 1877. This occurred when the mint received large orders for purposes of sale to non-collectors drawn to the celebrations held around the country at the time of the 1876 Centennial festivities. Yet despite the increased mintage, there a few Gem quality examples offered, which is attested to by the low population figure in this grade. Pop 16; 5 finer; 4 in 66; 1 in 67.
Estimated Value $7,000 - 8,000.

Lot 2841
1876 Trade Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 64. Shades of blue and purple toning. Only 1,150 proofs struck. The wonderland of color and smooth luster is utterly pleasing on this 1876 Proof, a coin whose natural shades and original toning points to years of careful preservation by its former owners.

The Proof coinage for this year increased modestly to 1,150 coins according to Mint records. 1876 was the year that the Centennial Exhibition was held in Fairmount Park in Philadelphia to observe the 100th anniversary of American independence. The Mint was invited to set up a display of coins and a sales service there, but declined, arguing that visitors were welcome to come to the Mint itself. Plainly many did. Pop 44; 19 finer; 16 in 5; 3 in 66. (PCGS # 7056) .

1879 Trade Dollar. NGC graded Proof 67 Cameo. Superb snow white gem. Creamy white devices eddy and churn with almost "frothy" luster as they ride like a ship on a glassy smooth sea of molten silver. Even the finest, most delicate detail is seen on this Proof-only Trade dollar struck with uncommon exactness for the issue. 1,541 proofs minted. Pop 14; 7 finer.
Estimated Value $14,000 - 15,000.

Lot 2845
1879 Trade Dollar. GLEAMING MULTICOLOR TONED PROOF 1879 TRADE DOLLAR. PCGS graded Proof 66. Lovely rainbow toning on both sides. Very high end coin. Pop 22; 7 finer in 67. Glistening fields rise and fall with original mint reflectivity and "bloom" off the dies. Against this are set serious, frosty design elements and outstanding colorful toning with reds, blues, and gold predominating. The mintage of Proof Trade Dollars resulted from the Coinage Act of 1873, a major piece of legislation altering many parts of America's coinage system. Proofs were struck every year from 1873 until 1883. But with the demise of Trade Dollars struck for circulation purposes after 1878, Proofs-only were minted in the later years. This resulted in very low mintage and, today, consistent high levels of interest from collectors. This splendid Proof 66 is among the sharpest preserved specimens to whet the appetite of any appreciative buyer (PCGS # 7059) .
Estimated Value $9,000 - 10,000.

1879 Trade Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 64. Lovely blue and tones. 1541 struck for this proof only date. The streaming color and originality is satiny and consistent on the devices, reflective with a mirror quality in the fields. A well struck and swirling Proofs that has carefully preserved surfaces as it fully earns its Proof 64 grade. Pop 112; 65 finer; 36 in 65; 22 in 66; 7 in 67. (PCGS # 7059) .

1880 Trade Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 64. Nice blue and golden toning. Only 1,987 struck for this proof only date. A few minor hairlines away from the Gem class. From one end to the other the intense silvery luster with its mirror-like reflection gyrates with almost atomic intensity. A sharp impression was left by the dies as well, and collectors often go for the scarcer Proof-only issues of 1879-83 since the overall mintage is low compared to the earlier dates in the series. Pop 155; 91 finer. (PCGS # 7060) .

Lot 2849
1882 Trade Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 64. Wonderful rainbow toning that covers the surface in a dappled pattern like something out of the impressionest era of painting. Only 1,097 coins minted all as proofs. A boldly struck fresh-surfaced coin whose great depth of detail in the strike complements the equally fresh mint bloom. Proof data: By year's end 1,097 Proofs had been struck, the third highest Proof mintage in the series, and one of just three Proof production quantities to break the 1,000 mark. Demand for them seems to have been heaviest earlier in the year, as the monthly production figures indicate (courtesy of the Bowers encyclopedia): "January: none; February: 393; March: 277; April: 49; May: 70; June: 23; July: 30; August: 10; September: 20; October: 20; November: 40; and December: 165. There is the possibility that some may have been melted, possibly part of the December mintage." Pop 102; 65 finer; 41 in 65; 19 in 66; 5 in 67. (PCGS # 7062) .
