Lot 2815
1851 Liberty Seated Dollar. PCGS graded MS-62. Original high date. Very Rare. 1,300 coins minted. The 1851 is a rarity within the Seated Liberty series, one of the most sought-after key issues. It is more elusive than the other low mintage date, 1852, whose total of 1,100 pieces is slightly less than the 1851. The latter production does not count Restrike Proofs, which are distinguished by the lower position of the date. Although Original 1851 Dollars have been cataloged as Proofs in the past, these are now believed to have been prooflike business strikes. Given the extremely small production, it is understandable that there be prooflike pieces among the few Mint State survivors. Bowers (1993 encyclopedia) surmises these prooflikes might also have been the outcome of die polishing to remove clash marks.

Only about 30 or so coins have been certified in Mint State by PCGS and NGC combined, some of which are resubmissions.

The present MS62 piece displays bright surfaces that are overlaid by stippled cobalt-blue and light gray patina. The design relief is exquisitely struck, with full detail on the Liberty and eagle motifs as well as on the peripheral elements such as the date, the stars, and the letters in the legends. A few minute ticks are scattered here and there, but none are of a size we feel deserve mention. A couple of roller marks at the top of Liberty's head may serve to identify the piece. PCGS serial #50183229. Pop 7; 8 finer; 1 in 63; 5 in 64, 1 in 65; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 6939) .
Estimated Value $45,000 - 50,000.

Lot 2816
1860 Liberty Seated Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 64. Nicely toned on both sides. Only 1330 proofs issued. An appealing fresh golden toned specimen with accents of subtle colors here and there around the stars, the legends, and outlining the main devices. Fully struck, and unmarred by discoloration or contact marks, it rests high within its Proof 64 grade class. The 1860 issue, due to a large percentage of the issue being melted, is quite difficult to encounter in this nice a grade showing full original uncleaned surfaces with characteristic Proof reflection in the fields. Pop 44; 7 finer; 1 in 65; 6 in 66. (PCGS # 7003) .
Estimated Value $4,500 - 5,000.

1860-O Liberty Seated Dollar. NGC graded MS-64. Bright and frosty. This is a sparkling silver specimen radiating fresh mint bloom, well struck and impeccably preserved with that "from the bag" gleam and glow. Something perhaps worth pausing to study is the fact that all devices were struck with the usual and desirable consistency of this year, that is, sharply by the dies, which then left behind bold elements of detail throughout. New Orleans mint at its best. Pop 22; 13 finer.
Estimated Value $4,200 - 4,600.

Lot 2818
1861 Liberty Seated Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 64. A hint of light golden and russet toning. Well struck. Only 1000 struck in proof. Completely original with attractive mint brilliance over pulsating light misty white contrasting devices. This is not a typical 1861 Proof which often lacks the finer points of the design and suffers dullness in the fields. The exact opposite: it is fresh appearing, in the sense of uncleaned surfaces, and has the right sparkle and dancing glow that collectors prefer. Although 1,000 Proof 1861 Liberty Seated silver dollars were minted, it is believed that only about 350 were ever sold. Of issues dated in the early 1860s, the 1861 is the rarest Proof today. Single Proof dollars cost $1.60 each at the Mint. (Those were the days!) Pop 22; 8 finer; 5 in 65; 2 in 66; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 7004) .

1863 Liberty Seated Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 65. Old green holder. Lovely shades of rainbow toning. Over 460 proofs struck. Pop 3 8 finer; 7 in 66; 1 in 67. The fully original example we now present bidders beats (from a technical angle) practically all of the 1863 Proof seated Liberty silver dollars that have passed through the various grading services. It has all of the distinctive appearance that collectors could ask for, including sharp relief, full mirrored fields (no lifelessness as on lesser coins), and charismatic shades of color over both sides. With the Civil War then in its third year, leisure activity like coin collecting fell to a low point in 1863-64. As the mintage reveals, only a small number of Proof sets were bought by collectors in 1863. The intervening 123 years has often been harsh on those seated Liberty dollars that survive. But this specimen, which retains full Gem quality surfaces, stands at the forefront (PCGS # 7006) .
Estimated Value $15,000 - 17,000.

1863 Liberty Seated Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 64. Nicely toned on both sides. Both sides put on view the distinctive "look" for this very scarce P-mint Proof delivery: smooth surfaces, rolling mirrored effects, and boldly struck devices including all stars as well as all letters in the legends having the "squared-off" sharpness of the Proofs. There is nothing timid about this attractively toned Proof 64 example. Only 460 proofs issued. Pop 36; 11 finer; 3 in 65; 4 in 66; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 7006) .

Lot 2821
1866 Liberty Seated Dollar. With motto. PCGS graded Proof 64 Cameo. A hint of lilac toning near the edges. Only 725 proofs struck. For the most part untoned with blazing mirror luster that atones for a few microscopic hairlines on the attractively preserved surfaces. There is rich contrast between the reflective field and frosted images of Liberty and eagle on this well struck piece. The stars, too are sharp as a tack, with all other design elements fully meeting the strict criteria for the grade. A scarce silver dollar minted in the first year of what has come to be known as the Reconstruction Era in post-Civil War America, where business expanded rapidly and new legions of coin collectors were added to the hobby. Pop 10; 10 finer; 7 in 65; 2 in 66; 1 in 68. (PCGS # 87014) .

1867 Liberty Seated Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 64 Cameo. Untoned and very flashy with nice cameo relief including stars and letters in the legends. Only 625 proofs struck. Pop 11; 2 finer in 65. A problem-free coin bursting with luster, vivid and white in appearance, wholly brilliant. What's more, the surfaces acquit themselves nicely in terms of the fewness of hairlines. A sharp strike is seen on most of this rare issue, which means that the dies were spaced at the right distance apart to prevent any weak metal flow in the areas where the high points of the design might be expected to cause problems. The stars, Liberty, and eagle are all very sharp for this date. Here we find that as with the other silver denominations struck in 1867, the silver dollar's regular production mintage (meant to circulate) was low. This lack of supply forces today's collectors to put increased pressure on the few remaining choice, sparkling Proofs of which this is a distinctive, in fact, distinguished looking example (PCGS # 87015) .
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.

1868 Liberty Seated Dollar. NGC graded Proof 63. Nicely toned. Only 600 proofs issued. Frosty covered devices is surrounded by smooth reflective quality, while natural patina dominates both sides of this choice coin. The year 1868 was an election year. Voters choose ex General Ulysses S. Grant as the 18th President. Also this year, out-going and politically unpopular President Andrew Johnson was impeached and barely saved from being voted out of office. Pop 35; 91finer.

1869 Liberty Seated Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 65. Old green holder. Wonderful shades of blue toning interspersed with crimson and gold. Only 600 Proofs minted. Pop 20; 6 finer in 66. Clean as a whistle, as one would look forward to from the Proof 65 grade; however, what really makes this break free from others is its deep mirror reflective quality that rolls around each side, with both surfaces overlaid by extremely attractive multicolor toning, as mentioned. Sales of Proof sets kept to an even level throughout much of this decade, with the mintage for 1869 being typical (very low, of course, by the standards of the 21st century). Any collector who acquires this piece will be in an enviable position (PCGS # 7017) .

1871 Liberty Seated Dollar. NGC graded Proof 66 Cameo. White. A touch of weakness is seen at upper curve of one wing on many Proofs of this issue, but here it is probably that the dies were spaced at the correct distance to prevent any weak metal flow in that area. The designs are very strong for the date, remarkably so. A lustrous example that has dazzling snow white brilliance plus strong cameo contrast. 960 proofs minted. Pop 3; none finer.
