1915-S Panama-Pacific Gold $2.50. PCGS graded MS-66 PQ. Well struck and nice original toning. Opulent orange-gold color is seen over each side with light accents of other hues in the mainly warm golden color. The strike as keen as a razor on this Pan-Pacific quarter eagle. The 1915-S Panama-Pacific Exposition was held at a time in our history when the art world was casting aside the constraints of its previous Victorian ways. Many new devices were being tested on America's coinage: matte proofing, rims without denticles, artistic lettering, textured fields, and the like. As can be seen, the coins struck for this expo, such as this handsome Quarter Eagle, incorporate some of these changes. Instead of a more traditional design, the artist proposed an unusual motif of Columbia seated on a mythological hippocampus, half-horse, half-sea serpent. The eagle, too, was rendered in a new way not seen before on an American production coin. It was modeled upon a similar eagle seen on one of the rare Pattern issues. Pop 355; 16 in 67. (PCGS # 7450) .

1915-S Panama-Pacific Gold $2.50. PCGS graded MS-64. Lightly toned. This is the desirable and fashionably ornate Pan-Pacific quarter eagle struck at the time of the famous San Francisco exposition. 1915-S Panama-Pacific Gold $2.50. PCGS graded MS-64. This boldly detailed representative from the 1915-S Panama-Pacific Expo series is mostly light greenish-gold in color with sleek, bright metallic frosted features. No deviation in the sharp relief seen on either Columbia or the hippocampus (a mythical beast, comically portrayed on this design as rearing back, its hooves in the air), not even in the centers of the coin show the least bit of softness. A beautiful design. An attractive coin (PCGS # 7450) .

Lot 2555
1915-S Panama-Pacific Gold $50 Round. NGC graded MS-65 P.Q. Lovely toning on both sides. In 1915 visitors from all over the world congregated at a new city that had been built of lath and plaster on the San Francisco shore front. Building upon the experience offered by the 1876 Centennial Exhibition (Philadelphia), 1892-1893 World's Columbian Exposition (Chicago), the 1900 Paris Exposition, the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair, and other such events, the Panama-Pacific International Exposition showcased the latest technology, art, history, and discoveries in science. The official job of the Exposition was to celebrate San Francisco's rebirth from the 1906 earthquake and fire, but also to observe the opening (in August 1914) of the Panama Canal.

Today the five different coins issued in connection with the Panama-Pacific International Exposition stand as the high-water mark among American commemoratives. The $50 round is among the most impressive in U.S. federal coinage, both as to size ($50 or two and one-half ounces of 900 Fine gold) and prestige (purchase price was $100). On the round issue (another type was struck on an 8-sided planchet) the artistry was by Robert Aitken, noted sculptor and coin designer whose handiwork presents Minerva, goddess of the harvest, wearing a Corinthian plumed helmet. Aitken used a more homegrown device for his reverse, a "wise" owl perched upon a pine branch. And what a resplendent way to preserve the occasion than by this well struck MS65 housed in NGC holder #1519999-006. Reddish to tawny-gold in color with a satiny perfection, the surfaces reveal none of the often-seen scattered obverse abrasions, they are sleek and glowing. That being the case, this date is also difficult to find fully struck. The present coin retains nice detail to the design on the helmet as well as complete feather definition on the owl's breast and wings, all from a strictly above-average strike. Only 483 coins minted. Pop 38; 22 finer.
Estimated Value $120,000 - 130,000.

1915-S Panama-Pacific Gold $50 Round. Details of AU-50. Cleaned and retoned. Clear-cut devices point to it having been giving a full, clear blow by the dies using the Philadelphia Mint's monumental 450-ton pressure stamping press. Weakness never occurs on these; care was taken with each and every strike, including this handsome coin.

During preparations for the Panama-Pacific Exposition's opening, the Philadelphia Mint shipped a 14-ton hydraulic press to the fairgrounds for the specific purpose of striking the $50 gold pieces. (Information has not been forthcoming as to how they managed it: probably it went disassembled by ship.)

On June 15, 1915, the first octagonal pieces were struck. During the months of June, July and August, the remaining gold fifties were coined. According to Slabaugh, after the first 62 round fifties were coined, the dies broke in striking the 63rd -- as did the remaining pairs of dies then on hand. Coinage had to be delayed until more dies arrived from Philadelphia.

The authorizing act specified 3,000 fifties: 1,500 each of the octagonal and round types. Sales went well enough to convince the authorities to strike the entire authorization, with 9 extras reserved for assay of the octagonal type, 10 extras of the round. However, the high prices of these coins severely limited the numbers to be sold. According to Exposition price lists, a single $50 coin could be had for $100, but this price entitled the buyer to the half dollar, dollar and quarter eagle free of additional charge.
Estimated Value $30,000 - 35,000.

1926 Sesquicentennial Gold $2.50. NGC graded MS-65. A frosty mint gem and quite rare this nice. John R. Sinnock created both the Half Dollar and Quarter Eagle Commemoratives made to celebrate our 150th anniversary as a nation. The Quarter Eagle has a representation of Liberty on the obverse holding a torch and wearing a liberty cap denoting freedom. The building on the reverse is Independence Hall, Philadelphia, with a rising sun behind it. Initials JRS are to the right of the building. In all, 45,793 Quarter Eagles were sold for $4.00 apiece. Pop 652; 73 finer.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,500.
