1857-S $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-65. S. S. Central America. 20A Spiked Shield. A brilliant gem exhibiting natural pinkish-golden color. The fully brilliant example we now hand over bidders beats (from a technical angle) practically all of the MS65 1857-S double eagles that have passed through the various PCGS SS Central America grading procedure. Another first-rate survivor with its bold impression left by a full blow of the dies, this handsome coin is very sharp from top to bottom, center to periphery. In a gold label holder.
Estimated Value $9,000 - 9,500.

1857-S $20 Liberty. NGC graded MS-64 Central America. Bright and fully lustrous. A gold, mint-fresh example from this famous shipwreck treasure trove, as crisp and glossy as when it was first retrieved from to Davy Jones' Locker for distribution. Adding to those results, a word about strike: this piece has all but needle-sharp devices, with gorgeous detail on the key main elements of both sides. 970,500 minted. Pop 54; 76 finer.

1857-S $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-64. S.S. Central America 20A Spiked Shield. Brilliant mint bloom luster. The surfaces are sleek and glowing with a healthy show of gold color. There is no toning. What one sees usually on this mint's coinage is a bold impression left by the recoil of the dies; greatly to our pleasure and the bidders' enjoyment, this coin excels and is among the boldest yet offered. This coin is sharp, very sharp, in fact. With plenty of aesthetic appeal for the advanced collector. In a gold label holder.

Lot 2257
1860 $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-62 PQ. An intensely lustrous example, light golden color. Frosty mint luster on the obverse, satin mint luster on reverse.577,690 coins minted. This is an particularly important occasion, since 1860 is anything but common in Mint State condition. The coin is a fully brilliant example with vivid (and frosty) yellow-gold luster throughout, with a few trace wisps of pinkish color. The often abundant abrasions found on Mint State Type 1 double eagles are virtually nonexistent; and only a few light hairlines keep this from the Choicer MS63 grade level. With the massive gold discoveries in California, erection and operation of the San Francisco Mint meant that less gold had to be transported to Philadelphia, thus lower mintages resulted. Pop 3; 9 finer. (PCGS # 8929) .
Estimated Value $7,000 - 8,000.

1861 $20 Liberty. Sharpness of MS-60. Cleaned and now retoning but with respectable levels of golden color and luster to enchant the collector all the same. The bold design on this issue is typical, unlike some dates later in the series when production standards at the Philadelphia Mint flagged somewhat. Easily impresses us as a coin to choose for a double eagle Type set or date collection (PCGS # 8932) .

1863-S $20 Liberty. SEGS graded AU-58. Our grade is AU-53 cleaned. Soft satiny colored luster a few abrasions, near the higher end of About Uncirculated quality but for the cleaning. All this is perhaps obvious from the photos. What we need to emphasize also is that the strike is customarily crisp and detailed for the issue with nice sharp metal flows into the deeper recesses of the dies on both sides.

1872-CC $20 Liberty. SEGS graded AU-58. Cleaned. Our grade is AU-55 cleaned. Medium and somewhat subdued luster still intact with some light contact marks normal for the grade, over yellow gold surfaces. Above average strike. A handsome specimen of a variety of which very few have any claim whatever to even the lower ranges of Mint State. The date logotype is deeply punched into the die and is ever so slightly closer to the dentil than to the neck truncation. On the reverse the CC mint letters are above the right upright of N (TWENTY) as illustrated.

Lot 2264
1875 $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-63. Old green label. Nice strike with lovely golden toning. Always frosty for the issue, as seen here, the shimmering-gold surface is nearly MS64 quality with few distracting bagmarks. That being the case, unlike the general run of pieces of this caliber, the strike is thoroughly convincing in the key places, even where some weakness is usually found at the shield and eagle. A frosty high grade specimen with extremely few seen better.

Unlike the design spacing on lower denominations, adding the motto IN GOD WE TRUST to the 1866-76 double eagles to create the Type 2 design did not result in undue crowding of the eagle. Longacre, to fulfill the demands of Congress and Treasury Secretary Salmon P. Chase (but ultimately of the Rev. M. R. Watkinson. of Ridleyville, Pa., progenitor of the religious motto idea), slightly enlarged the oval of stars above eagle's head, inserting the motto neatly within This was. however, not the only alteration The shield, formerly with straight edges, now has rococo borders; the double scroll has smaller but more elaborate finials encroaching less on IBUS; leaves are differently shaped and there are nine rather than the former eight; wings are closer to both E's (in some dies appearing to touch, or joined by a pseudo-border); tail closer to NT, requiring smaller mintmarks. The effects are noticeably superior to the Type 1 design. Pop 44; 3 finer in 64. (PCGS # 8973) .

1876-S $20 Liberty. SEGS graded MS-64. Some light hairlines. Our grade is MS-63. Brilliant and refreshingly appealing for this issue, in spite of the light hairlines, with satiny luster in the fields and sundrenched golden devices. The fields are untoned and satin with much eye-appeal. It is interesting to see, as well, that it was struck from well-prepared dies that imported a sound and in point of fact, a bold design.
Estimated Value $7,000 - 7,500.

Lot 2266
1876-S $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-62. A blace with luster. Somer natural coppery areas of tone on both sides. A couple of tiny bagmarks. This beautiful coin sums up nicely the experience of the gold satin luster on a well presented and fully struck Type 2 twenty from the "Gilded Age" of the 1870s. It is the kind of double eagle that collectors expect to find in the grade. Elusive as a choicer coin and better. It is easy to see this piece was delivered a hard blow by the dies, or as some researchers believe, the dies were nearly new and carefully set in the equipment to impart the requisite force, and which imparted their crispness to the struck planchet. Pop 317; 85 finer. (PCGS # 8978) .

1877-CC $20 Liberty. SEGS graded MS-60. Our grade is AU-58. Some satiny surface remainss with a few, but not many contact marks typical for the grade. The reverse, if graded separately, is a bit finer with good eye appeal.

The mintage of the 1877-CC declined to 42,565 in this year, a far cry from 1876-CC's production, resulting in pieces being somewhat scarce today.

1879-CC $20 Liberty. NGC graded AU-55. Plenty of original mint luster present. Lightly toned. A satiny and lustrous example with extensive amounts of residual mint frost on and within the devices. The luster continues throughout the field on both sides with a nuance of faint champagne orange on both sides. The strike is virtually complete for this often difficult CC-mint release, although perhaps a hint of weakness is seen at the beaded border of the coronet, scarcely noticeable in the overall sharp design. One of the key dates with only 10,708 minted. Pop 42; 51 finer.

1893-CC $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-62. Nice original roning. Low mintage Carson City issue. Original satin luster glitters throughout natural golden surfaces. The full sun is shining on this choice double eagle, unlike the threatening shadow cast over the Mint that struck it once the new Grover Cleveland administration was seated in the White House in January 1893. A man who stuck to a tight fiscal budget, Cleveland saw little need for the politically connected Carson City Mint and so abolished it by withdrawing its funding from his first budget (which a friendly Congress passed). So ended a distinguished 24 year reign of coinage by this far Western mint. And history will record that the 1893-CC gold issues, one and all, are highly prized by collectors. 18,402 coins minted. Pop 120; 18 finer in 63. (PCGS # 9023) .

1904 $20 Liberty. PCGS graded Proof 64 Cameo P.Q. Deep golden colors. Gold-gold satin frost on the devices is boldly hypnotic on this fresh-appearing Proof, with warm toning throughout. It being a Philadelphia Mint Proof, one of the consistently best made U.S. coins of them all, the devices were struck with systematic exactness throughout, there is no need to ignore the central part of Liberty's hair or the shield ornamentation where a somewhat rounded impression is often left by the dies on the business strikes. This glittery Proof is decidedly bold in the centers. A lovely coin and choice for the grade. PCGS #05430123. Only 98 proofs struck. Pop 6; 7 in 65 Cam. (PCGS # 89120) .
