Lot 2206
1843-O $10 Liberty. Sharpness of AU-55. Uneven toning from old cleaning. A bold coin nonetheless, notice the broad square framing rim and needle-sharp stars, hair, coronet and eagle. New Olreans Mint production standards at their best!
Estimated Value $700 - 750.

Lot 2207
1858 $10 Liberty. NGC graded MS-60. Very scarce date. Ten years after the famous California Gold Rush started in 1848, "Pike's Peak or Bust" became the cry of gold seekers heading for what today is Denver, Colorado during the subsequent rush and hysteria to get rich quick. This is a key date Eagle from that momentous year, one which boasts unusual properties so indicative of the times: rarity, value, collector appeal, and, in this particular coin, immeasurable beauty because it has been carefully preserved in Mint State condition! A remarkable coin. A once-in-a-blue-moon opportunity!

The 1858 is one of the key dates in the Eagle series, among the rarest, and because of earlier enthusiastic auction descriptions by such winsome and self-promoting dealers as B. Max Mehl, it is undoubtedly the most famous issue of this sometimes overlooked denomination. Most of the relatively few known survivors (perhaps 25 to 30 in all grades) are well worn with Very Fine being average. Until this high end specimen was sells, there will be lots to talk about; after the sale, the coin will likely go into hiding for years and years. Very few Mint State 1858 Eagles get offered for sale. Only 2,521 coins minted. Pop 2; 2 finer; 1 in 61; 1 in 64.
Estimated Value $25,000 - 30,000.

Lot 2208
1871-CC $10 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-58. Lightly toned and a very scarce date. 1871-CC clocks in as another unquestioned rarity among the $10 issues produced at this Nevada branch mint. Relatively few were struck (in this case, 8,025), and all are believed to have reached circulation. There was no collector response to such high-value gold pieces at the time, so the few survivors have only by chance come down to the present day.

The piece on offer is exceptionally attractive, ranking as it does high in the census, in fact, the only AU58 graded by PCGS, with just one graded finer. The striking is full, much luster is present, the rarity is, again, unquestioned, there are only a few ticks and slight marks present, but best of all, the fundamentals are in place for this to create a stir when it crosses the auction block. Pop 1; 1 finer in 62. (PCGS # 8661) .
Estimated Value $27,000 - 30,000.

1874-CC $10 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-53. Whereas 1875-CC tends to be weakly struck, the prior year's coinage, especially the $10 Eagle, is, as a rule, the exemplar of sharpness. As viewed here, either under a loupe or by means of the supplied photographs, it is plainly evident that the stars are full, Liberty's hair complete, and the eagle, always a source of problem with this mint's coinage, is as sharp as can be. With luster present in and around the devices, the grade is exact. With eye-appeal that won't quit, this coin's value to the collector is locked in stone for all eternity. We encourage a big bid. Pop 2; 8 finer; 6 in 55; 1 in 58; 1 in 63. (PCGS # 8670) .

1875-CC $10 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-53. Light golden toning. This lofty-grade 1875-CC is in the Condition Census category as explained by Doug Winter with regard to PCGS coins. Lustrous honey gold with plenty of brightness in the protected orange-tinted areas. From a modest mintage for the date of 7,715 pieces, with most survivors from that mintage at Very Fine or so, this beautiful AU53 specimen seems to have survived the vicissitudes of time. The Winter-Cutler guide book describes this date as "one of the rarest Carson City eagles from the standpoint of pieces known and rarity."

When seen -- which is too infrequently -- the 1875-CC is apt to be in Very Fine or occasionally EF preservation. Any piece grading AU is a major numismatic attraction. The present piece, solidly at AU53, is one of the very best you will see offered, and will be a showpiece in the collection of its next owner.

The Harry Bass website has extensive die characteristics for all early gold pieces. In reference to the 1875-CC eagles, it has this to say: "Date logotype nicely and evenly impressed, digit 1 ever so slightly closer to neck truncation than to dentils, digit 5 slightly closer to dentils than to neck; well centered horizontally. Left edge of lower serif of 1 over space between dentils. A small die lump is noted atop the upper right arm of the Y in LIBERTY. Reverse CC mintmark somewhat to right, both letters over the N in TEN. First C placed midway between talons and N, second C mostly under tip of arrow feather, letters nicely spaced." PCGS #21137831. Only 7,715 coins minted. Pop 6; 6 finer; 4 in 55; 1 in 58; 1 in 62. (PCGS # 8673) .
Estimated Value $20,000 - 24,000.

1875-CC $10 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-53. Lovely toning with prooflike surfaces. A luminous coppery gold to orange toned specimen of optimum quality for the grade: the luster is unbeatable as it outlines the stars, legends and date, and provides a glittering halo around Liberty and the eagle; as well, the strike is nearly full, being quite crisp in most places. A prime candidate for a "museum class" collection of rare date gold. A mere 7,715 coins minted. Pop 6; 6 finer.4 in 55; 1 in 58; 1 in 62. (PCGS # 8673) .

Lot 2212
1875-CC $10 Liberty. NGC graded AU-50. A hint of light golden toning. Surpassed in high grade rarity by only the key 1870-CC and 1873-CC, the 1875-CC has an extant population of perhaps 65 coins from an original mintage of 7,715 pieces. With only 7 reported at this level, and so few higher, the present survivor is expectantly a coin with a splendid future stretching out ahead of it. The coin is only lightly abraded for a circulated CC-mint gold coin with no stand-out marks that would serve as provenance markers. Ample satin luster remains on both sides hugging tightly the stars, date, and legends, the strike is typically soft for the issue, but only minor bluntness of detail noted over the central obverse and the lower reverse devices. An important CC-mint Eagle with a warm, golden-orange sheen. NGC #1775253-001. Pop 7; 10 finer.
Estimated Value $17,000 - 19,000.

Lot 2213
1875-CC $10 Liberty. PCGS graded EF-45. Lightly toned. The only weak area on this coin is associated with the arrow feather and the eagle's right talon. Normally 1875-CC coins are poorly struck, and this is never more evident than on the eagle. Here, however, the opposite seems to be the case, with sharp wing and neck feathers associated with a first-rate shield. The surface is generally without comment, other than for some random (but small) marks in the field west of Liberty. The other areas are nice enough that we're tempted to call them resplendent. Leave it that this is a huge improvement over most surviving 1875-CC eagles. A rarity among rarities. A coin worthy of your bid. Pop 10; 16 finer. (PCGS # 8673) .

1882-CC $10 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-58. This is a frosty textured '82-CC Eagle with almost no detectable friction on the high points. Further, the few abrasions are in the main light while the strike is well performed in all areas showing sharp curls on Liberty, and sharp eagle feathers plus shield. PCGS has graded none finer. To see why, it is necessary to delve into the coin's background. The 1882-CC Eagle, with its low mintage of 6,764 pieces, is the rarest CC-mint Eagle issued after 1879, in addition to survivors being equally as elusive as those of the more talked-about 1871-CC and 1874-CC deliveries. Pop 13; none finer. (PCGS # 8696) .

1882-CC $10 Liberty. NGC graded AU-58. Untoned. A beaming frosty specimen rolling in original cartwheel luster that emits boldly beneath only lightly rubbed highlights. This must have spent no more than a few months in circulation, if that. Possessed of a much better-quality strike than is normally found for a CC-mint Liberty eagle. 6,764 coins minted. 1901 $10 Liberty. NGC graded Proof 64. A nice example with a cameo effect. This is a richly golden nearly all-brilliant example whose surfaces are drenched in sunbright golden shades. We have no complaints about the strike, all features possessing a precision in the detail that could only be the result from Proof fabrication methods. Carefully preserved in finish throughout, both sides possess full mirrored gleam and sparkle that appears as "orange peel" texture at oblique light angles. One of only a few choice survivors from the original mintage, no more than half of which are believed extant. A few light hairlines are otherwise of no consequence given the visual impact this lovely Proof has on the viewer.

On the 1901 Proofs, the low date slants up to right, open 9. Bases of 19, below top of 0 show repunching. Die polish before eye and below ear. Reverse: Pattern of die polish as in 1900, but without the slanting die file marks in seventh white stripe or area of horizontal stripes just above it. 85 proofs minted. Pop 2; none finer.
Estimated Value $15,000 - 17,000.
