$2.50 Liberty

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1813
1860-C $2.50 Liberty. NGC graded MS-62. Nice untoned example. An refreshingly clean surfaced, mar-free example of this low-mintage rarity, one of just 7,469 struck. The onset of the American Civil War insured that many were lost, stolen or melted during that time of trouble. Satiny yellow gold luster on the obverse with similar frosty reverse. A few very minor surface nicks are noted, qualifying it for the Mint State 62 grade, but the fact remains that few finer 1860-C quarter eagles are recorded. Both sides show exceptional design definition with only the barest weakness among the hair and among the lower details of the eagle's claws and arrow feathers, this being typical for the issue. This example ranks high in the condition census for the date. Housed in NGC holder 1293449-039. Pop 3; 2 finer in 63.
Estimated Value $19,000 - 21,000.

1860-S $2.50 Liberty. NGC graded AU-58. Mostly untoned. Choice quality with flaxen to pale reddish-gold metallic aura over each side. An eye-appealing, AU58 specimen. Nearly fully struck, with just a suggestion of weakness at the hair above the eye and in the center of the reverse. Scarce. 35,600 struck. Pop 25; 9 finer.
Estimated Value $1,600 - 1,700.

Lot 1816
1873 $2.50 Liberty. Open 3. NGC graded MS-65. A frosty gem. Slightly pinkish-orange mint color. Bright rolling-fresh finish, bright as when first issued, awash in originality. Difficult to find. Soft-edged devices and lettering throughout the centers are sometimes found on this issue, as commonly seen; however, a small percentage of this year's production is found with enough convincing detail to be called "bold" and this is one such coin! 122,800 coins minted. Pop 9; 1 finer in 66.
Estimated Value $3,500 - 3,700.

1878-S $2.50 Liberty. SEGS graded MS-64. Light hairlines. Our grade MS-63. About as close to watertight MS64 as can be expected, this vibrant coin has only a few hairlines keeping us from agreeing with the grade assigned by this less widely followed grading service.

1884 $2.50 Liberty. NGC graded Proof 58. A proof struck issue that slipped into circulated for a short while. No serious marks with enough reflective fields and light handling marks. Scarce low mintage date as only 1950 were minted including 73 proofs. NGC reports this sole circulated example plus 1 in 60 and 1 in 64.

1885 $2.50 Liberty. NGC graded Proof 66 Ultra Cameo P.Q. A blazing bright gem. Excellent detail from a strong strike, the surfaces show sharp bright reddish gold color. Don't expect the anything in the way of a halfhearted impression left by the striking of the always-fresh Proof dies that made this piece, for we are glad to report the strength in the design is all that is expected: 100% needle-sharp detail. The luster glows. The fields resonate with smooth watery reflection. The coin itself is noteworthy since 1885 is a scarce year as a business strike. Proofs are rarely offered for sale. Only 87 proofs struck. Pop 1; finest graded by NGC; only 2 Ultra Cameos graded at NGC.
Estimated Value $25,000 - 30,000.

1898 $2.50 Liberty. NGC graded Proof 66 Cameo. Light golden toning. A coin with a rich background in the late 19th century when America was flexing its Imperial muscles, and a dignified tribute to Mint technology and artistry of the period. The strike details are immediately noticeable as razor-sharp. From the stars to the hair curls, the coronet to the eagle with its overlapping shield, everything is bold. The devices on this piece are nice and cameo frosted. Against the mirror field, they rise forth in Imperial splendor. The grade of Proof 66 says a lot about the coins overall aesthetic beauty, which is considerable! A rare gold Proof for the specialist. Only 165 proofs minted. Pop 9; 6 finer; 5 in 67; 1 in 68.

1898 $2.50 Liberty. NGC graded MS-67. A pinkish-golden frosty mint gem. Superb! A perfect type coin. The satin-like gleam of golden-colored originality is safe and sound from most abrasions of measurable size, easily setting this 1898 quarter eagle on the coveted "superb" pedestal. Devices are sharp in all areas, as struck, as desired by collectors, which the grading service has taken into consideration in assigning the '67 grade, as also desired by collectors. 24,000 coins minted. Pop 19; none finer.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,500.

1902 $2.50 Liberty. SEGS graded Proof 63. Our grade Proof 62. Likely an "all brilliant" strike from the way the dies were prepared, just estimating from the details and consistency in the surface glow (no cameo contrast). The surfaces choice with vivid gold hue and gleaming softly. Here, too, we are struck by the nice, convincing design detail for all areas of this important coin including the stars, with not even the slightest amount of flatness on the centers.

Lot 1830
1905 $2.50 Liberty. PCGS graded Proof 66. A tiny toned area at the point of the coronet. Virtually unrivaled in terms of exterior preservation, both sides of this golden beauty are well frosted on the devices and for all intents and purposes display free-flowing mirrors with beautiful "depth"; the fields show classic "orange peel" effect at certain angles. Both the peripheries and the central reverse are naturally detailed and full 100% crisp for their sharpness of strike. Proofs are the premier quality coins issued by a country's Mint, and the Liberty quarter eagles from the turn of the 20th century are some of the most beautifully made. All this is a forceful reminder in numismatics that it is quality that counts. 144 proofs minted. Pop 9; 2 finer in 67. (PCGS # 7931) .

1906 $2.50 Liberty. NGC graded Proof 67 Cameo. A fully untoned gem. The surfaces on this handsome coin are judged by us to be bright gold in color, without a lick of toning, and endlessly lustrous. No doubt about it, the grade acts on behalf of its outstanding quality. Where a collector might expect to see the usual sharp detail in the relief, this coin is a major standout specimen that shows the Mint pressman was at his task the day the Proofs were stamped. A superb cameo specimen! Only 160 proofs struck. Pop 10; 4 finer at NGC.

1906 $2.50 Liberty. NGC graded Proof 66 Cameo. Creamy gold devices eddy and churn with almost "frothy" cameo attraction. In addition, the coin possesses a nice, clear-cut strike for all areas with outstanding detail at the stars, Liberty's hair and coronet, on the eagle as well as the intricate parts of the shield. A sparkling gem Proof, in other words. A coin of distinction. Something for the specialist in this demanding Proof gold series. Only 160 struck. Pop 15; 14 finer.

1907 $2.50 Liberty. NGC graded Proof 66 Cameo. Fully untoned gem.
