Lot 1725
1868 $1 Gold Indian. NGC graded Proof 63 Cameo. Older holder. As many experienced numismatists will remind you, 1868 is by a small margin the scarcest Proof gold dollar from the decade of the 1860s. It is a little scarcer than the 1864 or 1867, as well as being more difficult than the 1865 and 1869 which have identical mintages. Only 12-15 Proofs of this date are believed to exist today from the original mintage of only 25 pieces.

This specimen is sharply struck with a full rim and rim dentils. It has cloudy, lightly to moderately hairlined fields, and attractive medium orange and greenish-gold color. Struck from the same obverse die used for all Proof Gold Dollars from 1862 to 1873. A rare opportunity. Pop 1; 7 finer; 3 in 64; 2 in 65; 2 in 66.
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.

Lot 1726
1870 $1 Gold Indian. NGC graded MS-65. Boldly struck. Bright with tawny-gold color, both sides exhibit few of the usual blemishes seen. A generous amount of crisp detail for the type, including those areas with the usual weak metal flows into the deepest channels of the dies leaving the centers bold. The Philadelphia Mint struck only 6,300 gold dollars this year, but it seems many were saved at the time of issue. As a result, the 1870 is more often seen in Mint State than in circulated grades. Pop 2; 9 finer.
Estimated Value $3,300 - 3,600.
