Lot 1643
1849 $1 Gold Liberty. Open wreath. NGC graded MS-65. Needle sharp and delicately toned. The deeply struck, matte-like surfaces are draped in soft reddish-golden patina and show minimal abrasions. Further, a very nice, sharp impression was left by the recoil of the dies that struck this lovely 1849 Type 1 gold dollar. 21.588 coins minted. Pop 16; 4 finer in 66.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,500.

Lot 1646
1849 $1 Gold Liberty. Open wreath. PCGS graded MS-64. A nice lightly toned example. A beautiful, frosty-gold Gem with luster happily trotting all over the surface of this delightful gold coin; there are no unsettling bagmarks on either side, just swirling mint glow. Keen-edged devices throughout, including the stars and hair detail. A beautiful first-year issue coin (PCGS # 7502) .

Lot 1647
1849-D $1 Gold Liberty. NGC graded MS-62. Boldly struck and untoned. 21,588 coins minted. Brilliant and refreshingly clean for this scarce Dahlonega Mint issue, with flickering luster in the fields and sundrenched golden devices. The fields are mainly untoned and satin with much eye-appeal. It is interesting to see, as well, that it was struck from well-prepared dies that imported a sound and in point of fact, a bold design in the following areas: stars and coronet (with full 13 beads at the border), crisp hair and hair bun, and all of the leaves visible in the wreath. Very scarce. Pop 39; 24 finer.
Estimated Value $6,000 - 6,500.

1850-C $1 Gold Liberty. SEGS graded MS-61. A nice untoned coin. Our grade is AU-58. Still has smooth frosted luster on a bright but satin finish, plus clear-cut devices pointing to it having been giving a bold strike by the dies. Scarce.

Lot 1652
1851 $1 Gold Liberty. PCGS graded MS-67. Well struck and very frosty. A few breaks in the luster from perfection. For the first time since the launch of the gold dollar in 1849, production at the Philadelphia Mint exceeded a million coins in 1851. A fair total of 3.3 millions coins were produced to make up for the absence of silver dollar coins, and, as one might surmise from this mintage figure, the 1851-P is a popular and readily obtained coin for type sets. Of course, at the MS67 grade, this issue is a significant condition rarity. What a breathtaking Superb Gem it is. The surfaces are overlaid in fine-grained, satin-smooth mint frost that exhibits lovely reddish-gold color. We have no doubt about this coin's originality, and the razor sharp strike completes the already memorable eye appeal. Pop 1; none finer. (PCGS # 6939) .
Estimated Value $17,000 - 18,000.

Lot 1656
1851-D $1 Gold Liberty. NGC graded MS-62. Untoned. The centers and peripheral areas are all mellow yellow-gold oscillating with deeper tawny color. A diminished impression was left by the recoil of the (possibly worn) dies that struck this, although the main portraiture is excellent. One small mark by the star at the 3 o'clock position of the obverse. Scarce in Mint condition. We expect a great deal of enthusiasm from bidders for these outstanding C and D mint rarities. The whole sale is peppered with them, gold dollars to half eagles, and a range of dates from the 1830s to the 1860s, almost exclusively in higher grades like this attractive 1851-D gold dollar. Only 9,882 coins minted. Pop 25; 10 finer.

1851-O $1 Gold Liberty. PCGS graded MS-65. Rich golden mint color. This conditionally rare contribution to the sale is brilliant with frosty gold surfaces. Impressive too is the strike, which we find is free of censure, being sharp in most areas except for some slight deviation in the sharp relief seen on the stars, mainly in the centers of the coin are crisply defined where the design filled the dies. A gem. Pop 21; 2 finer in 66. (PCGS # 7516) .

1853 $1 Gold Liberty. PCGS graded MS-66. Well preserved and light golden color. Lightning-bolt bright mint luster and its rich, variegated golden color. Devices were struck with the primary energy to impart the design to the inner areas but not with enough oomph and vigor by the dies to impart clear-cut stars. This is a well-known trait. 1853-C $1 Gold Liberty. NGC graded MS-62. Mostly untoned. It is not all gold that glareth says Geoffrey Chaucer, who wrote in a funny English several hundred years ago, but he probably wasn't looking at this bright golden 1853-C gold dollar. Had he done so, he might have noticed its marginally weak impression left by the rebound of the (possibly dilapidated) dies. All the same, the thought of owning a full Mint quality 1853-C gold dollar goes a long way. Total of 11,515 coins minted. Pop 10; 16 finer.
