Barber Quarter Dollars

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1549
1892 Barber Quarter Dollar. NGC graded MS-67. Gorgeous multi-color gem featuring shades of pale violet. Not to go overboard, but there is a wealth of detail seen throughout this well struck first-year of issue Barber quarter. A simply lovely example, the strike is noteworthy for this sometimes poorly produced type. The focal features are all sharply defined, and the luster is radiant with a nice reciprocating sheen under the toning. Fresh, original, superb. Pop 17; 6 finer; 5 in 68; 1 in 68 Star.
Estimated Value $2,400 - 2,600.

Lot 1550
1892 Barber Quarter Dollar. NGC graded MS-66 Type 2 reverse. Older holder. A well struck pinkish satiny mint beauty! Pop 81; 23 finer; 17 in 67; 5 in 68; 1 on 68 Star.

Coins of 1892 from all mints, including Proofs, come from two reverse hubs. "Type I" (1892 only) has eagle's wing covering less than half of E(D); "Type II" (1892-1916) has wing covering more than half of E including its entire crossbar, and the other wing overlaps much of R. "Type I" coins are scarcer from all mints and in all grade levels, and form a minority of proofs.
Estimated Value $1,300 - 1,400.

1894-S Barber Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. Lovely rainbow toning on both sides. A satiny and lustrous gem with a nice toning on both sides. The strike is complete, with strong detail at the edges of the shield where it meets the eagle's wings. Regarding the strike this is a high point of the design and occasionally shows weakness, but not here. A gem. Pop 18; 3 finer; 2 in 66; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 5609) .

Lot 1554
1896 Barber Quarter Dollar. NGC graded Proof 68 Cameo Star. An example whose rich frosty white luster on the head of Liberty and eagle's body pulsates with an inner energy like atomic fission. Struck with mathematical precision by the dies, the rims are square and bold, the stars, date, and legends have squared-off edges found on Proofs. The word "fresh" as Americans know it, refers to plump fruit or the gloss of paint on a new Mercedes; but here we use it to identify the gloss or glow of silvery originality on what can only be described as "fresh from the dies" quality. Watch the activity on this coin. NGC #1827382-002. Only 762 proofs minted. Pop 1; 2 finer in 69 Star.
Estimated Value $7,500 - 8,000.

Lot 1556
1906 Barber Quarter Dollar. NGC graded Proof 67. Gorgeous deep blue and rose midnight toning. 675 proofs minted. From one end to the other the intense mirror reflection in the luster gyrates with almost mesmerizing intensity. Devices foursquare and bold throughout as expected for a top-end Proof this year. Pop 25; 8 finer; 1 in 67 Star; 7 in 68.

The year 2006 marks the 100th anniversary of this Barber quarter Proof, and is also 100 years on since the city of San Francisco was shaken by a great earthquake. The 1906 baseball's World Series was the first to feature two teams from the same city, "the windy city" that is. Chicago was split in two as the American League's (South Side) White Sox competed against the National League (West Side) Cubs.
Estimated Value $3,200 - 3,500.

1907 Barber Quarter Dollar. NGC graded Proof 68. Deep irridescent blue toning on the obverse with lighter shades of gold on the reverse. The surfaces are bright with glistening color and show none of the muting often seen on some toned coins. Regarding this date, the clearest details are found throughout the peripheral areas but are also encompassing the key centers which are crystal clear as noted in hair ribbon with LIBERTY incused upon it, the cap and leaves, as well as the eagle's feathers and central shield. NGC #650145-009. One of 575 Proofs minted. Pop 10; 1 finer in 68 Star.

1911 Barber Quarter Dollar. NGC graded Proof 65 Cameo. An untoned beauty. Bright dancing surfaces exhibit intense mirror-smooth reflection and a satiny, matte-like appearance for the devices. Lot 1563
1913 Barber Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 66 Cameo PQ. Wonderful vibrant colored toning. This coin will bring a record price. 613 proofs minted. Satin surfaces top the devices of this well made Proof, devices that are almost frosted with pleasant, glowing silvery-gold color in the form of a spotlight on both sides. Feel free to use the word "astounding" when describing the color to your friends, should you be so lucky as to acquire this 1913 Barber quarter. So much, then, for the surface condition. As for the devices, these were struck with sufficient power by the dies that they left all design elements showing, not a sign of weakness anywhere, unlike many (even Proofs) where a few areas mushy. Worth a strong bid just for the color. Pop 2; 4 finer in 67. (PCGS # 85699) .
