Lot 1525
1853 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. Arrows and rays. NGC graded Proof 67. Lovely blue and gold toning on both sides. Nice prooflike fields and well struck. An exceptional rarity and a key one-year Type that is toned in light warm sunset gold to rose hues glittery mirror surfaces, the color shading to iridescent blue with key blue elements in the composition. Incredible quality! Razor-sharp struck on both sides, the devices show their best star performance under a low power loupe where all of the intricate design detail shows clearly. Reflective mirror fields confirm the status as a rare Proof of this date, which nicely offset the devices. There are only five Proof specimens known of the 1853 Arrows & Rays Quarter:

(1) The Eliasberg Collection sale piece;

(2) 1998 Pittman Collection sale piece;

(3) 1988 Norweb Collection sale coin;

(4) Auction'80 sale example;

(5) National Numismatic Collection in the Smithsonian.

No records exist listing how many Proofs were struck this year, the mint record keeping was sparse in the 1850s; nor is there any indication how many Proof sets might have been made for distribution to visitors to the Mint. Dave Akers, who cataloged the Pittman Collection's own Proof 1853 Arrows & Rays quarter, wrote that the coin offered in that sale was "The most Prooflike of any of the examples I have seen and the most convincing as a true Proof." Also, an interesting discussion occurred between David Akers and David Bowers when they were both cataloging the Pittman and Eliasberg coins, both of which were offered raw (not yet certified). Mr. Akers noted that the Pittman coin did not have a mirror finish between the shield lines, but otherwise had all the reflectivity of a Proof issue, especially given that virtually all other 1853 arrows and rays quarters are so well frosted. Prospective bidders will want to read the description under lot 1454 in the Eliasberg sale as well as the notations under lot 1325 in the Pittman Part II collection. Again, the beautifully toned specimen offered here does not leave any question as to its status either, an amazing offering; a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the advanced collector or student of numismatics.

The 1853 design features arrows at the date and a "glory" of rays around the eagle. It is a one year type coin and one of the rarest dates in of all quarters in Proof condition. Less than 10 exist and perhaps as few as 5 were coined, and comprise those five in the above list. The coin is set in NGC holder #1723001-002 and will undoubtedly become a part of one of the "world's greatest" collections of United States coins. Only 5 minted. 4 proofs graded at NGC. Pop 1; the finest graded.
Estimated Value $175,000 - 200,000.

1862 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. NGC graded Proof 67 Cameo. A glittering white cameo gem. Clearly the most visually arresting aspect of this lovely Proof coin is its soft, frosted mint luster on the devices, imparted by the specially prepared dies. Struck with controlled precision throughout. 550 proofs minted. Pop 4; none finer.

1874 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. Arrows. NGC graded Proof 67. Spectacular rainbow toned gem with bulls-eye toning. 700 proofs minted. A silvery bright "spot-light" center on this specimen glowing with original mint bloom and vibrant colors. The real charm of it all is that the toning expresses itself in a most balanced platform: frosted light "cameo" devices against infinitely "deep" mirrors. Moving along, the coin also presents a decidedly sharp strike, with boldness to the stars, Liberty's hair and dress, both shields, and all of the intricate detail put into the design of the eagle by the genius of Christian Gobrecht in the 1830s when he designed the coin. Pop 6; 1 finer in 68 Star.

Lot 1536
1874 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. Arrows. PCGS graded Proof 63 Cameo PQ. Light even lilac toning on both sides. 700 proofs minted. A simply eye-catching Proof 63 coin, the choice surfaces seem to glisten with full, mirror-smooth luster. This is a well-struck example of an important two-year Type with good details on all stars and key design elements, unlike some. It has no bothersome abrasions or heavy hairlines, as is often the case, nor did the vagaries of time leave behind anything but exemplary toning. Arrows were added to the date in 1873-74 to denote a slight change in the coin's weight. After 1875, the arrows were no longer required and so were left off the dies. Pop 3; 21 finer. (PCGS # 85575) .

1878 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 63 Cameo. Nicely toned around the edges. 800 proofs minted. Virtually ice-white in the centers but then this handsome choice coin acquiesces to gentle shades of gold before taking the headlong plunge into rollicking sunset orange with purple, and then onto a last hurrah (at the rims) of midnight blue for a very special look and beauty. Both sides are so toned. Both sides display the cameo contrast collectors have long come to associate with well-struck 19th century Proofs. Pop 5; 5 finer; 4 in 64; 1 in 65. (PCGS # 85579) .

1880 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 64 Cameo PQ. Wonderful multicolor toning. Also undergraded. Could run away. 1,355 proofs minted. The surfaces have a splendid, metallic, satin-like sheen with great color, vivid and grabbing your attention. The photographs show it well, but the naked eye viewing the coin itself catches all the nuance of the iridescent hues. No need to worry about an unsuccessful strike left by the rebound of the dies that coined this, since even a cursory examination of the piece reveals nice clarity of detail, including the centers, including the stars, Liberty's hair and shield, as well as the eagle's feathers and shield. No doubt about it, this coin deserves your attention! Pop 18; 19 finer. (PCGS # 85581) .

1881 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. NGC graded MS-67 Prooflike. Blast white. Lustrous but deep white mirror reflectivity dominates the surfaces of this beautiful two-tone coin, with a particular glow to the reverse fields. The aforesaid "dual toning" refers not to any color, for it is purest white. Instead, the devices are well frosted against the almost proof-quality mirror background. This gives the piece a cameo-like quality. Deficiency isn't in the cards when it comes to this coin's detail, in fact, outstanding is the word to describe the striking detail on main motifs. A jewel!12,000 coins minted. Pop 1. Finest prooflike known .
