1883 Shield Nickel. PCGS graded Proof 64. Lightly toned. A bold Proof example of this final year design. James Barton Longacre created this design in 1865 and it was first used on the nickel five-cent coinage the following year. In 1883, Charles E. Barber, his replacement as Chief Engraver (Longacre died in 1869) designed the coin that supercedes the Shield nickel, this being the Liberty head nickel (PCGS # 3838) .
