Indian Head Cents

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1033
1859 Indian Head Cent. NGC graded Proof 66. Lightly toned on the reverse. 800 proofs minted. A rare high quality Proof for the date, this example displays almost enthralling mirror surfaces whose satin topped devices give it a nice two tone effect. Faithful to every detail from a full blow by the dies, as expected on a well-struck Proof. Pop 18; 3 finer; 1 in 66 star; 1 in 67; 1 in 67 Star.

The Indian Head one-cent coin was produced by the United States Mint from 1859 through 1909. It was designed by James Barton Longacre, the Engraver at the Philadelphia Mint.

The obverse of the coin shows UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, a Liberty head facing to the left, wearing a feather bonnet. The word LIBERTY is shown on the band across the bonnet, and shows the production date below.

The coin's reverse side shows ONE CENT within a laurel wreath. (In 1860 the reverse design was changed slightly, showing ONE CENT within an oak wreath, with three arrows inserted under the ribbon that binds the two branches of the wreath.)

The coins that were struck between 1859 and 1864 were composed of 88 percent copper and 12 percent nickel, as required by law on thick, 72-grain planchets.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,500.

1862 Indian Head Cent. NGC graded Proof 66. A near immaculate gem. Lightly toned. About as close to watertight perfection as can be expected, this vibrant Proof copper-nickel Indian cent. Best of all, it is a solidly graded example, the coin displays above-average striking definition for Proof from this year. This is to say that the strike is complete, not even a single fused feather vane over Liberty's head to keep this coin from being full. 550 proofs minted. Pop 31; 5 finer in 67.

To aid the Mint in coining large numbers of the new bronze coins beginning in 1864, a private company received a contract to prepare blanks for the bronze coinage. With this help, the Mint was able to strike nearly 60 million coins in the last seven months of 1864. The small coin shortage was over. Only a few bronze Proof Indian cents were struck bearing the date 1864, since most of the coinage had already taken place early in the year using the copper-nickel format (PCGS # 2277) .

The surfaces are radiant and each side has a nice veneer of colorful coppery patina that whips and tosses as it alternates between lighter and darker shades.
