Lot 952
1793 Flowing Hair Cent. Chain reverse, "AMERI." in legend. . S-1, r-4. NGC graded Fine-15 Brown. Sharpness F15 but there are several light pinscratches on the obverse, strongest in the field before the face. These scratches do not alter the toning and offer only a minor distraction to otherwise smooth, corrosion-free surfaces. The only other notable defect is a small planchet fissure at the rim over the LI in LIBERTY, as struck. Glossy steel brown and chocolate with frosty lighter brown toning in protected areas. The date is clear, although it is never as strong as the other design elements because it was lightly punched into the die. The reverse is sharper than the obverse, as usual, and those design elements are bold. E-MDS, Breen die state II, with swelling at the top of the U in UNITED. EAC grade net VG10+, close to F12. The AMERI feature is noted on the NGC label.
Estimated Value $20,000 - 30,000.

1793 Flowing Hair Cent. Chain reverse, "AMERICA" in legend. . S-3, R-3. Fine-12. Sharpness F15 or slightly better but there is some very fine roughness on both sides, strongest on the left side of the obverse, and a dull scratch from the bust tip arcing down to the rim under the 9 in the date. A few specks of very shallow verdigris can be found with the aid of a strong glass, but they certainly are not a distraction. The date and legends are complete and strong. Slightly glossy reddish chocolate and steel brown. MDS, Breen die state II. Not perfect but certainly a very acceptable example for the grade.
Estimated Value $8,000 - 12,000.

Slightly glossy dark steel brown. The date and obverse periods are clear, and the legends are complete. The reverse chain is bold. Not perfect but still an attractive, nicely detailed example of this popular variety (PCGS # 1341) .

The only defects on this otherwise flawless cent are several light rim bruises on both sides, the notable ones at S-OF-AM. The date and legends are bold. MDS, Breen state II. The bisecting reverse crack is clear inside the wreath. A premium example in spite of the light rim marks. EAC grade VF25 (PCGS # 1347) .

1794 Liberty Cap Cent. "Head of 1794". . S-21, R-3. PCGS graded EF-40. Glossy dark steel brown and chocolate with frosty lighter steel brown toning in protected areas of the reverse. The surfaces appear perfectly smooth to the unaided eye, but a strong glass reveals uniform extremely fine granularity covering the surfaces. This micro roughness is effectively hidden by the attractive toning and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent. No verdigris or marks other than a tiny speck of lighter brown toning in the field off the tip of the nose. MDS, Breen die state III, with a single die crack joining the cap to the B above. EAC grade VF35, Noyes photo #26602. Pop 4; 12 finer. (PCGS # 901375) .
