1786 New Jersey Maris 23-P Rarity-3 VF35. Curved Plow Beam with Narrow Shield. Choice glossy medium brown. The only defects are some of the usual very tiny planchet voids or chips scattered about both sides, the largest ones confined inside the shield. Most of the planchet is smooth and there are no marks or other distractions. Nicely struck LDS with a strong cud break over the A at the right end of the plow. The obverse is nicely centered on the planchet while the reverse is off a bit to the left. A very nice example of this scarce die state. Weight 141.7 grains.

The top of the date is visible and most of the legend remains readable, the only portion that can't be made out being SARE in CAESAREA. Very slightly glossy chocolate and steel brown. The reverse is upset, struck head-to-head. Far from perfect but a very rare type seldom found in any grade. Weight 148.9 grains.

The surfaces are a bit matte thanks to extremely fine uniform roughness. No verdigris or marks. Struck over a Connecticut copper. Strong undertype from the obverse shows inside the shield and weaker undertype is visible in the field before the horse. Called the "Camel Head" due to the odd shape of the horse's snout.
