Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 4854
1875, $1 National Bank Note. The La Crosse National Bank, La Crosse, Wisconsin. . Fr-384. . KL-1090. PCGS Very Fine 20. A surprisingly large number of Aces have survived from this bank that issued only First Charter period notes and went out of business in 1896.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,200.

Lot 4855
Original Series, $2 National Bank Note. . Fr-389. . KL-1095. The Central NB of Boston, MA. PCGS Choice About New 55PPQ. A wonderful Original Series Boston Lazy Deuce. Only 9 notes are known from this bank, and just four of them are Lazy Deuces. This one is as nice as they come with bold originality and much better margins than normally seen from here (most come with the notoriously tight "New England" trim). One fold separates this note from Choice New. Otherwise, full crispness.
Estimated Value $8,000 - 9,000.

1882, $5 National Bank Note. . Fr-467. . KL-1115. The NB of Commerce in New York, New York. F-467. PCGS Gem CU 65PQ. A fresh-appearing Gem. The national banking system, created during the Civil War by Secretary [Salmon P.] Chase and his advisers, was one of the most admirable expedients ever devised in any country. Up to the time of its establishment the whole country had suffered enormously from the wretched currency supplied from the State banks. Even in those States where the greatest precaution was taken to insure its redemption all of it was, in time of crisis or panic, fluctuating and much of it worthless. But in other States the case was even worse. Bankers and merchants often had to resort a book called a 'bank-note detector,' which, when any money was tendered, the recipient was obliged to consult in order to know, first, whether the bill was a counterfeit, as it frequently was; secondly, whether it was on a solvent bank; and thirdly, if good, what discount should be deducted from the face of it. Under the National Banking System, this problem was solved and money from one banking house circulated "at par" everywhere in the country.
Estimated Value $2,500 - 2,750.

Lot 4862
1882, $5 National Bank Note. . Fr-472. . KL-1120. CGA Gem Uncirculated 67. This lovely Bank Serial Number 1 New York Brown Back $5 of the 1882 series has unusually deep, strictly original embossing of the type that one associates with later Silver Certificates and U.S. Notes. It's almost never this pronounced on this early type. A Superb Gem, it is also beautifully centered with full fat margins, with its paper color and all the ink colors as bright as the moment the note was pulled from the press. This is an exceptional example of a #1 note, one that is also desirable for the bank of issue. Expect the competition to be heated if you want to take this marvelous note home.
Estimated Value $12,500 - 15,000.

1882, $20 National Bank Note. . Fr-494. . KL-1259. The First NB of Batavia, Ohio. CGA Gem Uncirculated 68. This Brown Back twenty is very well centered, and it has perfect colors along with all its deep, original embossing from the pressure of the plate. The note is loaded with eye appeal and fancy detail, and it should easily satisfy the fussiest of National Bank Note collectors. The note traces to the Jim O'Neal Collection, and no doubt will continue an illustrious career in the future collection in which it will go. This is a type that is extremely difficult to locate with perfect Gem Uncirculated 68 color, originality and centering. Among the finest National Bank Notes we've handled.

1882, $20 National Bank Note. . Fr-501. . KL-1266. The Exchange NB of Tampa, Florida. F-501. PCGS Very Good 8. Only 3 Brown Backs are known on this bank and this is the only $20 reported. Minor roughness at top and bottom margins and along lower left margin; numerous pinholes (acceptable for a note in Very Good), with nice margins and clear Sepia signatures.

Not that paper money specialists need to know this, but Sepia is a red-brown ink made from the ink sacs of cuttlefish, which are dried and ground to a fine powder, then mixed with shellac. (The ink takes is name from the cuttlefish species Sepia Officinalis.) This ink came into use in the eighteenth century and was quite popular in the nineteenth century as it appears on many of the hand-signed National Bank Notes of the period as well as documents and letters of every description. (The term sepia now also applies to any red-brown color similar to the color of sepia ink.).

Lot 4879
1902, $5 National Bank Note. . Fr-605. . KL-1162. A wonderful uncut sheet in Crisp Uncirculated condition Quite rare. Uncut sheets are always exciting to own, part of the history of the bank in many instances, many were framed and hung on the walls of their respective institutions. But this also means that many show signs of fading (from sunlight) or glue stains or pin holes in the corners. Others, that were retained by bank officers and their heirs, tended to be folded or soiled in the intervening years. The four-note sheet in this lot is, to use the slang term, "a cut above." No, there is nothing in the way of tears or cuts on it. Instead, this is a very special sheet. First, its quality is A#1, fresh, crisp, wide margined, with vibrant color and bold signatures. Then, for the serial number buff, it has both the bank serial # and Treasury number the same. And what a sexy number: 99999. Five-nines. A wonderful appearing sheet from this Detroit bank.
