Legal Tender Notes (U.S. Notes) - Large

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 4738
1862, $1 United States Note. The First and Last Note Printed. . Fr-17a. . KL-2. An amazing pair of Green Backs. Consists of the very first note, Serial Number 1 in PMG Very Fine 20 and the last note printed, Serial Number 100000 in PMG Very Fine 20 with splits & staining. A unique opportunity.

As stated in Lyn Knight's Oct. 2004 Sale of the John Whitney Walter Collection catalog: This is the first issue legal tender note that bears the portrait of Salmon P. Chase, the Secretary of the Treasury under Lincoln when this note was designed. The story says that his political aspirations were responsible for having used his own portrait on this note. Later he served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. He remains well known among numismatists for his efforts of having the motto "In God We Trust" adopted on our coinage. The pictured notes are offered as a pair, for as you can see, they represent the first and last of the run, or better described as the lowest and highest serial numbers available on the issue. Each time 100,000 notes were printed the series number was changed. This pair of notes survived as part of the famous Robert Schermerhorn Collection and were later sold by Stack's in 1990 (lot 1046) where they realized $7000. Today these notes remain equally as rare as they have been for over 140 years.
Estimated Value $15,000 - 20,000.
Both ex John Whitney Walter.

1880, $1 United States Note. . Fr-31. . KL-18. PMG Choice Extremely Fine. A genuinely pleasing and attractive early $1 Legal Tender note with much residual crispness in the paper. The design for F-31 has a large spiked red seal offsetting the deep blue serial numbers. George Washington occupies the central position, while Columbus Sighting Land is the small vignette at the left. The standard Legal Tender "second obligation" is written out in small letters in the opening at the right on the back. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA in the form of a large X makes this a distinctive back design.

A lovely Rainbow Deuce with deep blue paper "stain" as made (an anti-counterfeiting device, one of many on this intriguing design of 1869). Green overlay with red seal and serial numbers, completes the Rainbow effect on the front. The back is in standard Legal Tender green, a color that has become, in the 21st century, the standard by which foreigners identify American currency. Very few foreigners have ever seen one of these early large-size notes, however; and indeed, few Americans are aware that these were in print and circulated more than a century and a third ago!

Lot 4762
1869, $5 United States Note. . Fr-64. . KL-194. PMG Gem Uncirculated 65. Exceptional Paper Quality is noted in bold lettering on the back of the PMG grading tag, and the vividness of this piece easily justifies the expression of quality. A Jackson Five with Pioneer or Woodchopper vignett at the center, its front has a variety of colors which show nicely in the photographs. The back, more standard in design, has green ink with the usual Legal Tender obligation split between two ovals left and right of the large numeral 5. These notes, because they were not backed by gold or silver, were not legal tender for duties on imports or payment of interest on the public debt in an era of hard-money.

The head is of Andrew Jackson, seventh President of the United States, 1829-1833, from a printing by Thomas Sully, engraved by Alfred Sealey. The pioneer family was engraved by Henry Gugler.

1901, $10 United States Note. . Fr-122. . KL-388. CGA Gem Uncirculated 65. Rare Star note. This auction marks the rare appearance of a gorgeous Gem F-122 $10 Bison Star note at public sale, one of the few offerings in the last dozen years, and especially noteworthy in this outstanding condition. The F-122 star is ensconced only in the strongest of collections, and unlikely to be available to collectors for many years to come after its sale. That makes this a key opportunity for any collector to achieve completion of a star note set by type. With the market for true numismatic rarities reaching record levels at every offering it stands to reason this lovely Gem Uncirculated 65 note will command a lot of attention. Its colors are bright. Red for the seal, serial numbers and X-TEN embossing. Black for the front design, deep, with nice contrast against the almost white field of paper. On the back, deep green color, with the two bands of red-and-blue silk fibers plainly visible as indicators of the government's anti-counterfeiting device. A note whose sale will be remembered and discussed for years to come!

1901, $10 United States Note. . Fr-122. . KL-388. PCGS Extremely Fine 40. A few hidden folds are present but the note faces up as a beuatiful CU example. Throughout this catalog we use the term United States Note or Legal Tender to describe the greenbacks of 1862 and those of this obligation which followed. Often, in later issues, terms like Treasury Note or United States Note appear in the top margin. However, all were issued under the terms spelled out in the Legal Tender Acts of 1862 and 1863 which authorized them. Speelman and White signatures appear at the end of the Bison Note series, the two shared office in 1922 to 1927.

Unlike most of this number, this one is not printed on the paper with the bold repetitive USUSUS watermark nor does it have the heavy blue anti-counterfeiting effect. This handsome piece features the paper with a heavy profusion of blue fibers at the right end of the back as its active anti-counterfeiting device and only faint blue color.

This extremely rare $100 U.S. Note has minimal wear for the grade, no soiling or restoration, and it gives the appearance of a nicely margined, intact Fine or perhaps even a Very Fine. This is one of fewer than 30 examples known of this one-number type, and turns out to be the highest denomination of the Rainbow series that the everyday collector can afford. Perhaps half-a-dozen are in museum collections, leaving only a few for the collecting public to compete over.
