1908 $5 Indian. PCGS graded Proof 63. Old green holder. Dull matte proof that needs to be sent to NCS. Small mark on both sides. Pop 2; 45 finer. Only 167 Proofs minted, although it is believed not all 167 pieces were distributed, and that some were later melted. This attractive Matte Proof has choice, variegated but still smooth, matte surfaces. There are a couple of tiny scuffs and marks in the hard finish but nothing else in the form of post-striking impairments on either side. Somewhat greenish brown tinted as many 1908 fives, the overall color on this piece is very attractive (PCGS # 8539) .
Estimated Value $7,000 - 7,500.

1908 $5 Indian. PCGS graded MS-63. Well struck with lovely golden toning on both sides. A beautiful, frosty-gold 1908 initial-year date, there are no unsettling heavy bagmarks on either side. No more, no less, just as fully struck, as attractive, as you could ask for, with complete detail at the Indian's headdress feathers. Some of the later issues tend to be weak on these, especially the bottom 2 feathers (PCGS # 8510) .

1908-S $5 Indian. PCGS graded MS-62. Frosty throughout, this is the first of several very low mintage dates, and a semi-key in the series: only 82,000 minted. The Indian type conforms to the quarter eagle of the same date. The recessed relief designs and lettering make these two series unique in our United States coinage. Pop 39. (PCGS # 8512) .

1909-O $5 Indian. NGC graded AU-58. Popular key date. A beaming AU58 rolling in unbeatable smooth luster that emits boldly beneath bright highlights and only minor circulation friction. Possessed of a much better-quality strike than is normally found for a key date issue like this, all of the "recessed relief" design is firmly struck by the dies, while the mintmark (the only part of the coin actually above the field surface) has a nicely formed "O" for all to see and the knowledgeable collector to think about and admire. Only 34,200 minted. Pop 249; 104 finer at NGC.

Very scarce in choice mint condition, as revealed in the Population statistics. Pop 18; 6 in 65; 1 in 66. (PCGS # 8522) .

1912 $5 Indian. PCGS graded MS-62. A hint of light gold tone. Satiny orange gold surfaces with some expressive marks and hairlines on the high points limiting the grade. A pleasing choice Uncirculated example of one of the most popular two and one-half dollar gold issues in American numismatics. 1912 is the year the Titanic sank and Theodore Roosevelt was shot in an assassination attempt. In 1912, angered over what he felt was the betrayal of his policies by his hand-picked successor, President William Howard Taft, former president Theodore Roosevelt sought the Republican nomination. When the party chose Taft and Vice President James Sherman at the convention, Roosevelt bolted and formed the Progressive party, or Bull Moose party. The split ticket allowed democrat Woodrow Wilson to win the election (PCGS # 8523) .

1914-D $5 Indian. PCGS graded MS-64. Well struck with rich golden toning. A beauty, with nice original copper gold color on very choice, undisturbed surfaces free of copper spots or intrusive marks. A smoothed rather than sharp impression was left by the pressure of the dies that struck this at centers, with some marginal weakness in the ends of the four lower feathers on the Indian. Denver Mint in 1914 seems to have made its quarter eagles and half eagles with about the same resolution from the dies, while the Philadelphia Mint's coinage is similar on the soft side when compared to either 1913 or 1915 issues. 1916-S $5 Indian. PCGS graded MS-64. Lovely color. Always a hard coin to find in MS64 or better. Both sides of this attractive '16-S half eagle are bright with vibrant peach to golden-rose and tawny patination. Given the proper amount of strike pressure, the coin was fully brought up by the dies as well, which bidders may want to make a note of in their catalogs. Pop 67; 8 in 65; 3 in 66. (PCGS # 8532) .

1929 $5 Indian. PCGS graded MS-64. Key date to this series and a coin boasting beautiful color. The frosty textured surfaces are awash in rich orange-gold colors, and both sides are uncommonly well preserved for this often indifferently produced rarity. Regarding this date, the clearest details are found mainly in the upper left areas on the obverse, while the feathers are somewhat weak as noted in flattened state of the vanes and barbs. A small mark by the Indian's neck; otherwise exceedingly choice and original for this very scarce coin. Pop 98; 7 in 65; none finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 8533) .

1929 $5 Indian. PCGS graded MS-61. Nice untoned example of this key date. A radiant example, fully original with brilliant gold color that rises and falls in an almost rhythmic display. Associated with this grade, a few light marks on the Indian's face and in the field on either side of the eagle. There is a small scuff in the frost of the lower leg on the eagle. Here, too, we are struck by the nice, convincing design detail for all areas of this important key date half eagle of 1929, a coin with only the slightest amount of flatness on the lower war bonnet feathers.

When Bela Lyon Pratt's new Indian head motif was launched upon the American waters in 1908, the public was at first shocked but soon grew used to the novelty. Never before in American numismatics had a coin designer broken with tradition in such a overt way as did Pratt. For what Pratt did was to recess the design below the surface of the coin! Forget the fact that his half eagles and quarter eagles were far more aesthetically challenging than the long-running and tired-appearing Liberty heads they replaced. Unlike his predecessors, Pratt chose to honor a real American Indian for a change, not some allegorical Greek goddess wearing an incongruous Indian headdress. And because of this, his design helped to propel American coin design into the World Class league, as this rare 1929 issue exemplifies. Pop 23. (PCGS # 8533) .
