Lot 3299
1883 Hawaiian Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-61 Prooflike. Looks like a proof. The satin surfaces ripple with original luster and only minimal bagmarks. The coin is untoned and silvery. Far from the normal example with its weak area of beard detail on the jaw, this issue shows complete detail throughout with no signs of weakness. The coinage of Hawaii was from a special government bond issue of 1880 and caused quite a stir in the islands when it was learned that the $100,000 seignorage on the coins (the 10% profit made from the cost of the bullion being less than the face value of the coins) went secretly to the crafty Honolulu banker and sugar baron, Claus Spreckels.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,250.
The Emile A. Tartakow Collection.

A total of 500,000 minted, but 257,400 redeemed and melted after Hawaii landed in the stable of Territories in the early part of the 20th century.
Estimated Value $700 - 900.

Lot 3301
1883 Hawaiian Pattern Dollar. NGC graded Proof 66 Brown. Medcalf 2CPC-4. Proofs were made of all denominations of Hawaiian coinage, and struck in silver and copper. No U.S. mint marks are present on the coins but they were struck at Philadelphia from dies made by Charles E. Barber. Claus Spreckels, the Hawaiian sugar king, used his influence to have the coins made for the Hawaiian Government.

The Hawaiian Dollar is the most impressive denomination in the group since it displays the entire Hawaiian Royal Coat of Arms. The two halves of the shield with its 8 bars alludes to the (then) 8 inhabited islands in the Hawaiian archipelago. The Hawaiian motto translates as "The life of the land is preserved in righteousness." All Hawaiian coins were manufactured to the U.S. standard circulation coinage (except for the never issued, Pattern-only Hapawalu). All pattern trial pieces were dated 1883 and struck in copper from the same dies used for the 1883 Kingdom of Hawaii silver coins. Eighteen sets (without the umi keneta or dime) were struck in copper. This is one of the most attractive Proofs known of the dollar denomination.
Estimated Value $7,500 - 10,000.
The Emile A. Tartakow Collection.

Lot 3302
1883 Hawaiian Dollar. NGC graded Proof 61 Medcalf 2CS-5. Mostly untoned with minor hairlines and a small contact mark below K of KALAKAUA. A marvelous rarity and collected right along with regular issue U.S. coins since Hawaii later became a Territory (i.e., a colony) of the United States in 1904. The 1883 Kingdom coinage was designed by Charles E. Barber of the Philadelphia Mint where these Proofs were struck. There are two distinctive engraving styles, the fine detail work of the half, quarter and dime with very sharp curl detail of hair and beard as compared to the dollar. The coins regular-issue coins were struck at the San Francisco Mint for Spreckels, an agent for the counterparties. Only 26 Proofs of the dollar denomination were made in silver.
Estimated Value $7,000 - 9,000.
The Emile A. Tartakow Collection.
