Bust Dollars

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 3065
1801. BB-211; B-1 R4. NGC graded AU-53. Well struck with light natural grey toning. The stars are very bold. The dollars of 1801, despite their relatively low mintage, were one of the hardest working classes of bust dollars in existence, with worn pieces aplenty but choice examples like the present coin having much to be admired. Pop 1; 2 in 55; 1 in 58. Among the finest for the grade.
Estimated Value $8,000 - 9,000.

A fresh appearing and naturally toned example whose beauty is there for the admiring, with fully defined design features and burst of varying toning hues on both sides. This is another in a nice consignment of high quality Bust Dollars that bidders will look back to fondly once the sale is history. Pop 37 for all varieties at PCGS. (PCGS # 6893) .

1802. Narrow date. BB-241; B-6 R1. NGC graded AU-55. Light silver and gold toning that is deepest at the rim; another outstanding example of an early Bust silver dollar. Blue and gold primarily on the reverse. Very bold details. With an estimated population of 1,500 to 2,750 specimens, 1802 BB-241 is more plentiful than all other varieties of 1802 combined, but what does it matter with a coin this attractive and appealing! Pop 4; 8 finer for the variety at NGC.
Estimated Value $8,000 - 9,000.

1802. Narrow date. BB-241; B-6 R1. NGC graded EF-45. Nice even light gray toning on both sides. Pop 2; 16 finer graded at NGC for this variety. Deficient just a bit on the striking detail on central hair curls and upper end of the draper at Liberty's shoulder; also there is just a little weakness on the eagle's wings, the upper part as well as the lower feathers, but all in all a fresh, uncleaned, and "original" specimen without a single disturbing edge mark.
Estimated Value $4,500 - 5,000.

Lot 3070
1802. Narrow date. BB-241; B-6 R1. NGC graded VF-35. Nice medium shades of gold and greyish colors. Attractive. A splendid uncleaned early bust dollar with excellent surface originality and lively rose and deep golden brown to gray "antique" toning. Typical strike for the date being much sharper than on some varieties of this year, well defined at the head curls and mostly but not completely showing at the shoulder area of Liberty. In other words, very choice where physical quality is concerned.
Estimated Value $3,300 - 3,500.

Lot 3071
1802, 2 over 1. Wide date. B-3, BB-234. NGC graded AU-53. Lustrous, mint-frosty surfaces around the devices put on a show with their rich medium gray and gold color, the overall appearance greatly reinforced by extremely choice surfaces. Regarding this date, the obverse die has a Wide overdate, with most space between 8 and 0. There is a small raised die lump in the field by the 8th and 9th stars. This obverse die used to strike 1802/1 BB-234 only. REVERSE B was a more long-lived die used to strike 1801 BB-214 and repeated under 1802/1 BB-233. Pop 5; 25 finer.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 11,000.

There is a nick on the neck of Liberty plus a few other marks here and there, but all in all a desirable example of the last year of regular issue for the bust dollar. Pop 1; 1 in 58; 1 in 61; 1 in 64. Among the top 5 graded.
Estimated Value $9,000 - 10,000.
