Lot 1752
1838 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. Lovely deep blue toning with lovely rose at the centers. The colors are iridescent, the surfce frosty in the extreme on this handsome first-year issue. Only marginal weakness occurs at the obverse stars and some of the rim denticles, but the centers are without qualification. Popular type coin. Pop 14; 2 in 65; 3 in 66; 1 in 68. (PCGS # 5391) .

Lot 1753
1842-O Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. Small date. PCGS graded AU-55. A hint of light grey toning.Very Rare. A well-known rarity among New Orleans Mint Seated Quarters, the Small Date variety has an original mintage that probably comprised only a very small percentage of the 1842-O's 769,000-piece delivery. Examples are rare in all grades (Briggs even assigns G/VG examples a Rarity-5 rating!), and they are especially so at or above AU. Approximately 10% of extant '42-O Small Date Quarters were struck after the reverse die suffered extensive damage in the Mint. This damage resulted in obscured definition in the centers on both sides of all coins subsequently struck from this die marriage. Fortunately for our bidders, this coin was delivered prior to this damage, and it is an exceptionally attractive example in all regards.

Easily among the most appealing '42-O Small Date Quarters that we have ever handled, this coin is sharply struck with only light wear across the highpoints. The overall appearance is one of even, attractive, silver-gray color, and ample remnants of original luster shine forth from the more protected areas around the devices. There are no obvious abrasions, and the eye appeal is stronger than that sometimes seen on BU Seated Quarters from this coinage facility. PCGS series #21939817. Pop 2; 1 in 58; 1 in 61. PCGS has graded a total of 25 coins in all grades. (PCGS # 5403) .

1843 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. NGC graded MS-64. Well struck and white. Bright mint luster characterizes the choice surfaces on this lovely piece. Where an ineffectual imprint is often left by the rebound of the dies that struck the No Motto seated Liberty coinage, the opposite is in fact the case with this P-mint 1843: devices show excellent clarity and above-board detail in the centers as well as at the stars. Bidders be tipped off, you may face stiff competition. Pop 7; 1 in 65; 1 in 66.

Lot 1755
1847 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 65. Old green holder. A very rare early proof striking. In Breen's 1977 encyclopedia on Proof coinage, he estimated that perhaps 7-8 proofs of this date exist. Neither he nor Larry Briggs, the current seated coinage specialist, have estimated the number originally struck, but it probably was as few as 20 pieces. All Proofs have the plain date without repunching or recutting, and the reverse is from the same Proof die used in 1846.

When closely examined, the reverse shows to have been struck from heavily polished dies, as there are innumerable raised die polish lines running across that side. This takes a certain amount of magnification to see since the surfaces are toned in multiple layers of dappled to streaked blue, olive-green, the various "old silver" hues, and who knows what other colors. Nicely reflective fields. The strike is uniformly high, but not quite 100% as seen on post-1858 Proofs sold to collectors. A very rare opportunity as early Proofs are seen today. In PCGS holder 9696395.
Pop 2; none finer at PCGS. Only 4 graded in proof at PCGS. (PCGS # 5541) .

1850-O Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded MS-63. Light to deep golden brown toning on the obverse. A rounded impression was left by the stamp of the dies that struck this O-mint issue, about par for the 1850-O in fact, since the dies were either worn or not set to strike the planchets with the required pressure. Nevertheless a choice example of a much-melted date. Pop 6; 1 in 64; none higher at PCGS. (PCGS # 5416) .

Lot 1760
1857 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded MS-66. A gorgeous gem! Well struck with warm, deepening sunset tones. An unusually high quality coin for the date, this specimen displays, instead of the usual whiteness, some of the most riveting colorful toning we have encountered. The colors swirl before our eyes. The underlying luster is fresh and appealing. Moving along, we can gladly report a highly presentable strike, also, with boldness to the centers and stars (two areas where this year's coinage sometimes comes up short). So all in all a pristine example for the connoisseur of seated Liberty coins. Pop 228; 3 in 67; 1 in 68. (PCGS # 5442) .

Careening mirrors play vividly beneath golden brown to gray-blue highlights of this early Proof, while bursts of satin quality frost form an aura atop main design elements of this two-tone specimen. The strike is strong in all the key areas including Liberty's hair and shoulder, the stars, and on the reverse the eagle's leg and neck feathers. Pop 20; 13 finer at NGC. (PCGS # 5554) .

1859 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. NGC graded Proof 66 Cameo. Well struck and white. An understandably bright and lively gem with intense frosted relief and a bold strike. The grade is accurate down to the finest point with no criticism whatever about this coin's fresh appearance. Everything you would want from the grade, and probably then some; the 1859 No Motto is much scarcer than dates in the 1860s or 1870s, which is why we might see a scramble among bidders to acquire it. Only 800 proofs issued. Pop 9; 1 in 67 Cameo.

1860 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. NGC graded Proof 65 Cameo. A fully white coin. Untamed mirror fresh luster on a nice example free of any toning and one that escaped the heavy hairlines so often found on No Motto seated quarters. Reasonable detail definition, especially to the all-important area at Liberty and the shield along with the eagle. Only a few of the stars are bluntly struck on this Gem specimen. Mathematically exact standards were not very common in those days, although the mint improved its Proof quality by the time the Barber coinage arrived in the 1890s. 1,000 proofs minted. Lot 1772
1870 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. NGC graded Proof 66. Beautiful rainbow toning on both sides. Well detailed for this more difficult early Proof, with wonderful golden-orange centers on the obverse that deepen into highlights of purple and electric blue. The colors one sees, in the photos and first-hand, add immeasurably to the appeal of this remarkable spot-free Gem. Only 1,000 Proofs minted. Pop 7; 3 in 67.

U.S. population in 1870 was 38,558,371. Out of this number, there were only 1,000 Proof sets ordered from the Philadelphia Mint. America was expanding rapidly in those days. Between 1870 and 1880, 3 million immigrants came to the U.S. Americans also liked to use their rifles a lot to shoot things. Between 1870 and 1880, one million buffalo were slaughtered annually. As always, Americans wanted to grow rich. One of the most famous rich men of the time, John D. Rockefeller, and his associates founded the Standard Oil Company of Ohio in 1870. It was capitalized at $1 million. In time, it would grow to absorb most other oil companies in America.

1873 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. No arrows. Closed 3. NGC graded Proof 67. Lovely blue and golden toning. Pop 4; 2 in 68. A gleaming gem of the highest quality for this popularly collected design. Full radiant mirrors blends smoothly with the intensity of toning on both sides. We see pale golden to purple-rose centers on the obverse, that deepen to high-voltage electric blue at the margins, with highlights on the frosted surfaces giving the coin a smooth cameo-like look. Whereas the obverse is very blue, the reverse is very gold, in fact, warm reddish amber gold, making the transition into purple then blue at the rim. Pass the word around to your friends, for subsequent auctions will rarely offer such a remarkable Proof seated Liberty quarter. In many ways we find it crossing the threshold into a future collection whose "home" will be a museum class set of seated Liberty coins.

1874-S Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. Arrows. PCGS graded MS-65. A well struck and intensely frosty mint gem from the San Francisco Mint, basically untoned. Although essentially brilliant, the smooth, satiny surfaces show a decided tinge of light silvery antique gray color cast at certain angles. Judged from an aesthetic standpoint, the coin is also possessed of a much finer strike than is typically found for a coin struck this year.

In 1874, the worst grasshopper plague in U. S. history scourged the Great Plains from the Dakotas to northern Texas in almost biblical numbers. Yet that did not stop a stream of hopeful immigrants when the discovery of gold brought thousands of gold seekers into the Black Hills reservation in the Dakota Territory. America's history is interleaved with gold rushes, silver finds, and other such enriching possibilities. Pop 47; 25 in 66; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 5495) .
