Twenty Cent Pieces

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1739
1875-S Twenty Cents. NGC graded MS-66. Lovely gold and blue toning. Well struck. Silver satin luster on a well presented and fully original example, there are scattered blushes of amber brown and blue toning on either side. Elusive as a Gem and better. Soft-edged devices and lettering throughout the centers are typical on this issue, as commonly seen. This may explain the paucity of gems on the market. However, a small percentage of this year's production is found with enough convincing detail to be called "bold" and this is one such coin! Pop 39; 6 finer at NGC.
Estimated Value $7,500 - 8,000.

Lot 1740
1875-S Twenty Cents. PCGS graded MS-63. Nice shades of blue and gold colors are finely dappled on this handsome, lustrous example of the short-lived twenty-cent denomination. Normal detail on all devices, with just a narrow region of weakness found on the legs and upper body of Liberty. A choice, original coin (PCGS # 5298) .
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,100.

Lot 1741
1876 Twenty Cents. PCGS graded Proof 66. Lovely blue and gold toning. A high degree of vibrant mirror surface spins smoothly around the satin frosted devices on this impeccably preserved twenty-cent piece. Deep golden to purple and blue toning cover the outer surfaces of this flashy and elusive gem. The strike is crisp in most areas, with no sign of weak detail anywhere on the coin. The eagle on this coin may be familiar to collectors who own a Trade dollar since the design is similar, lacking only the scroll and other ornamentation. Both are by the then-Chief Engraver at the mint, William Barber. Only 1,260 Proofs struck. Pop 10; none finer. (PCGS # 5304) .
Estimated Value $10,000 - 12,000.

Lot 1742
1878 Twenty Cents. PCGS graded Proof 66. Wonderful blue and gold toning on both sides. Displaying a uniform mirror brilliance on each side atop which glistens some of the most attractive sky blue to electric blue toning ever seen on the obverse (with a bit of dusky lavender in the center for good measure). The reverse has a central splash of bright blue, almost turquoise, surrounded by gold to amber red. Sheer boldness of strike throughout would be the ideal for any Proof twenty-cent piece, and this handsome 1878 Proof meets the challenge to strike completely; the design left by the rebound of the dies is in an excellent state at the centers as well as the legends and date, including the tiny stars. Pop 13; none finer. (PCGS # 5306) .
Estimated Value $15,000 - 16,000.
