Half Dimes

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1672
1795 Flowing Hair Half Dime. PCGS graded MS-62 Valentine-6, LM-9. Well struck with nice even toning on both sides. While Mint State examples are occasionally available through the near-Gem level, they are always quickly snapped up by eager Type set collectors, all are surprisingly elusive. This is a frosty if somewhat die clashed example, beautifully patinated and a survivor that is indicative of an even higher grade.

On Valentine-6, the reverse has a single berry inside the wreath below the left wing, and this lone characteristic is the only attribution requirement. Obverse is cracked through the right arm of Y to the nose, face, and neck, continuing to the top of the digit 7 and the rim. Secondary obverse cracks are also present. Pop 27; 79 finer. (PCGS # 4251) .

All 1794-1805 half dimes have vertically reeded edges imparted by the Castaing machine before devices were stamped; close collars for reeding edges did not come into use until 1828-29.
Estimated Value $11,000 - 13,000.

Lot 1673
1797 Draped Bust Half Dime. 13 stars. Sharpness of VF-30. The rarest varity for this year. Cleaned long ago with some marks about the rims. There are four different varieties of 1797 Half Dimes currently known, with three different star counts on the obverse. Valentine-1 with 13 Stars (LM4) is the rarest of four varieties for the year, and it is the only die variety of the design type with 13 stars on the obverse. Both sides have prominent clash marks, and the reverse has the top of A in STATES filled. A pleasing pale golden to russet gray "old silver" specimen with choice surfaces and grand eye appeal for the grade. As always, normal weakness at the centers. Only 44,527 half dimes minted in 1797.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,400.

Lot 1674
1800 Draped Bust Half Dime. PCGS graded VF-20 V-1, LM-1. No problems. Light antique greyish violet. This is the first year of issue for the new half dime with a heraldic eagle reverse design. Naturally toned in "old silver" hues, with weak areas due to an uneven strike. A small rim pinch is present at the 12th star. On Valentine-1, there is a perfect LIBERTY with the upper inside point of star 1 close to the small middle curl. Seldom seen with perfect dies. All four digits in the date are equally spaced on this variety, and the first star is low in the field (PCGS # 4264) .
Estimated Value $1,100 - 1,200.

Lot 1676
1837 Liberty Seated Half Dime. No stars. NGC graded MS-67. A nice bold strike. Superb! An incredibly lustrous gem with resonating cartwheels beneath rich champagne brown and pale blue obverse toning. The reverse plays host to the shame shimmering frost but with a slightly lighter overlay of toning. Other than a few weak dentils on the reverse, the coin is boldly struck, including the key devices. A lovely coin, one that certainly meets the qualifications for the assigned grade. Pop 12; 1 in 68; 1 in 68 Star.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 12,000.

Lot 1677
1837 Liberty Seated Half Dime. No stars, small date. PCGS graded MS-64. Well struck and satiny overlaid with uniform pale grayish lilac toning. This conditionally scarce No Stars offering is nicely toned with richly satin-frosted surfaces around the cameo-like figure of Liberty. The strike is generally free of criticism, and typical for an early Gobrecht-inspired half dime of the period, being sharp in all areas expecially the hair, gown, and lines in the shield. The wreath, too, shows outstanding detail. Pop 19; 5 in 65; 5 in 66; 2 in 67; 1 in 68. (PCGS # 4312) .

Lot 1678
1838-O Liberty Seated Half Dime. No stars. NGC graded MS-63. Well struck with gray toning. A few obverse marks visable with a 5X glass. A semi-prooflike example of this important first-year of issue from New Orleans, with choice luster that graces the well toned surfaces. Nicely struck for the date, indeed, about as fine as this O-mint No Stars Type is ever found. Christian Gobrecht would have loved this one! He was the mastermind behind the delicate design of Liberty and the clever use of a plain field to simulate a rare cameo jewel. Low mintage of 70,000. Pop 3; 3 in 64, 1 in 65.
Estimated Value $5,500 - 6,500.

Adequately struck as well, with just a hint of weakness at the stars and rim denticles. Pop 29; 7 finer in 67. (PCGS # 4356) .

1855 Liberty Seated Half Dime. PCGS graded MS-65. Well struck with a touch of delicate golden toning. A satiny gem of the finest order. Explosive cartwheel luster graces the warm champagne brown and antique silvery surfaces. Normal struck for the date, easily finer in sharpness in the centers but then marginally weak at the peripheries including the left side of the shield. Pop 22; 3 finer in 66. (PCGS # 4360) .

Lot 1681
1858 Liberty Seated Half Dime. PCGS graded MS-67. Superb! Well struck with light clash mark as made. Creamy-white surfaces darkening slightly around the borders. A satiny gem, superb in every square millimeter of its fabric. The graceful underlying luster supports pale gold, warm amber, and faint rose iridescence. A pleasing example of the date, boldly struck at HALF DIME and the lower wreath (the smudging on the photograph is caused by blurriness on the plastic slab and isn't on the coin) and therefore with exactly the right detail in the head, shield, and other area of the design that the coin is utterly pristine! Pop 11; 1 finer in 68. (PCGS # 4367) .

Lot 1682
1858 Liberty Seated Half Dime. PCGS graded MS-66. Lovely toning on both sides. Among the more poorly defined issues in the series as a rule, this scintillating MS66 example breaks that trend and displays uncommon sharpness including all the highest points of the design. Even the normal softness on the left side of the shield and hand is absent. Both sides are graced by wonderful multicolor toning (PCGS # 4367) .
Estimated Value $1,200 - 1,300.

1858-O Liberty Seated Half Dime. PCGS graded MS-64. A beauty featuring frosty surfaces overlaid with natural reddish sunset toning. A coin with a nice cartwheel appeal with the swirling luster fresh and frosty. A soft impact was left only on the denticles by the recoil of the that struck this 1858 No Motto piece, but the centers show excellent detail from top to bottom (PCGS # 4369) .
