Lot 1647
1912-D Liberty Nickel. NGC graded MS-66. Lovely toning and well struck. Fully original with extraordinarily clean, thick, creamy mint frost and vivid toning. Basically superb with just a hint of a few hairlines. Virtually fully struck in the centers, with just a trace of weakness at the hair curls above the brow. Also, a few lower stars are flat on the left side. This date represents the Denver Mint's debut striking the five-cent denomination (it received permission to strike gold and silver coins in 1906, and the Lincoln cent in 1911). The "D" mintmark is place inconspicuously below one of the design "stops" separating the denomination from UNITED in the statutory legend on the reverse. Pop 22; 3 finer in 67.
Estimated Value $2,800 - 3,000.
