Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 27
1862 Indian Head Cent. PCGS graded MS-64. Nicely toned. Fully original choiceness with warm golden to tan color from the interaction of the atmosphere on the copper and nickel components of this unusually fat (72-grain) cent of the early period. Adequately struck, though perhaps not 100% sharp. It was the hard nickel alloy that was one reason for the mint abandoning the composition in 1864 in favor of French bronze, which has more of the softer copper in the alloy (PCGS # 2064) .
Estimated Value $180 - 200.

Lot 28
1863 Indian Head Cent. PCGS graded MS-63. Natural toning. A highly original example of the thick copper-nickel cent (72 grains weight, versus 48 grains for the later bronze cents). There is more than a nuance of pale champagne and brown toning on both sides. Struck from typical dies that imported a mostly sharp but occasionally rounded texture (PCGS # 2067) .
Estimated Value $100 - 120.

1864-L. MINT ERROR. Struck 15% Off Center. NGC graded MS-63 Brown. Quite unusual to find such a rare date mint error. Lustrous brown with familiar wood-grain toning, the L on the ribbon is sharp and easily seen, while the date shows only the tops of the numerals since this is off-center at approximately the 6 o'clock position. Extra bold relief.
Estimated Value $400 - 500.

1909 Indian Head Cent. PCGS graded MS-65 Red. Slightly faded mint red color. Pop 550; 138 in 66 RD; 3 in 67 RD. A blazing deep red to coppery golden gem of the finest order. Intense cartwheel luster fairly leaps from the surfaces of this prize S-mint rarity. One look at the present gem will satisfy your curiosity as to why few examples of the date has been certified finer than the present coin. For that matter, a collector would be hard put to find a more truly beautiful eye-appealing specimen of this popular issue with not even a smidgen of softness on the main devices (unless you want to quibble about a few rounded ends on some of the feathers in the Indian headdress). 1916 Lincoln Cent. ANACS graded Proof 64 Brown. Reddish-violet. In a new style holder. A worldly dose of heavy matte finish to the luster enlivens the broad expanse of smooth surface on this handsome Proof from 1916. The fields are virtually gem quality, while the strike is bold enough to warrant special mention. In this year, the mint revised its master hub by strengthening the beard, hair, and wheat ears. The improvement is immediately noticeable! (PCGS # 3324) .
