1925 Norse Medal. PCGS graded MS-65 Thick. Fully lustrous and frosty, with great detail. A medal, not a coin, but collected right along with the regular commemorative coin series, this and related pieces were issued in connection with the Norse American Centennial in 1925. The proposers wanted a coin, but did not press their case strongly, not realizing that coins could be widely sold throughout the numismatic market, but medals would have less appeal. Accordingly, large quantities remained unsold for years afterward. However, in the 1940s and 1950s James, Inc., a Louisville, Kentucky firm, distributed many of these, including in special holders that had so-called half dollars of other types in them. Year by year they became more popular (PCGS # 9450) .
Estimated Value $150 - 200.

1935-S Arkansas Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. Light hint of golden toning. This fully struck Gem has glowing smooth surfaces underneath the color and no active problems on either side such as nicks or spotting. Very common in Gem condition, there is no reason to beat about the bush about that, yet still refreshing to describe for you with its intact mint luster (PCGS # 9235) .

1936-S Bay Bridge Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-66. Soft violet toning. In old green label holder. Virtually slick-as-ice in the fields giving way to nice original patina on both sides. Since this Bay Bridge received the requisite amount of strike pressure, the coin is fully brought up by the dies. We see no reason to add in any "however" here, since there are no soft areas as are sometimes found on this date, none at all! (PCGS # 9254) .

Given the requisite amount of pressure, the dies brought this coin up fully in all areas. 1935 Connecticut Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. Mostly white. This is a blemish-free example of the Connecticut half dollar, white in color, with nice mint bloom and just a dash of light toning. A dampened impression is now and then found on the tree from the weak rebound of the dies that made this year's coinage; however, rather than being halfhearted, this particular coin's design is boldly crisp (PCGS # 9299) .

1936 Elgin Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-66 PQ. Nice original toning. A lustrous example that has dazzling snow white brilliance mellowed only partway by the original pearl gray toning, deepest (golden amber) at the periphery. Almost everyone likes to seek an Elgin that was struck with precision and care by the dies in the outer margins and on all legends that you'd expect; here too, the inner portrait of the pioneer was also left crisply detailed by the imprint of the dies. Elgins are unique for their very heavy mint frost (PCGS # 9303) .

1936 Elgin Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. Nice original toning. A frosty Gem. Struck for the Centennial of the city of Elgin, Illinois, the public streamed in from near and far, on foot, by automobile, and in trains to celebrate the event. The obverse head is a copy of "Head of a Pioneer" by Trygve Rovelstad. The statue from which this head derives is represented on the reverse by the coin's artist who was also sculpted the statue. There were 20,000 Elgins sold at $1.50 each out of an original authorization of 25,000; the remaining 5,000 were returned to the mint and remelted in 1937 (PCGS # 9303) .

1918 Illinois Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. Nice white coin. A lustrous example of this relatively high mintage date, untoned and only mildly abraded; excellent silver color. A gem. The 1918 Lincoln uses the same obverse rim devices as that found on the standing Liberty quarters, a repetition of a dot-dash pattern that is very effective in balancing out the central devices. This is the only occurrence on a commemorative coin (PCGS # 9320) .

Minor weakness to the face of the Minuteman of the obverse, who stands proudly with his farm implements by his side but a musket at the ready in his right hand. Pop 745; (PCGS # 9318) .

1936 Oregon Trail Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-66. Pleasant, almost cheery silver satin frost display lots of fresh white color still streaming through the natural russet and gray patina that keeps it so well preserved. Struck with exactitude rarely found on an Oregon issue, with only marginal design softness at the Indian's head and a few of the features of the migrant family on the reverse. Settlers in the early 1830s and 1840s, before the transcontinental railway, had a choice: a 2,000 mile walk through hostile lands or a year-long boat ride around the tip of South America to get to the promised land of the west Coast of Oregon and Washington. This commemorative marks the less expensive but arduous land route which so many took.

1920 Pilgrim Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-65. Very beautifully toned. In fact, wonderful deep red and gold toned surfaces eddy and churn with almost "frothy" luster on a base of neutral "old silver" patina that attests to its long residence in an old coin envelope.

The familiar elementary school "look" of the pilgrim is something of a stretch. As depicted in paintings and drawings of the era, Pilgrim men wore a variety of hats not only to protect themselves from the weather but also for pure adornment. It would not be unusual to see a hat with a brightly colored band or feather tucked inside (belt buckles were an addition of the late 17th century).
