1898 Prototype "Monkey's Donation" Party Game. A rare and unique presentation copy consisting of six pieces: the transmittal envelope sent to the Library of Congress by Charles Zimmerling 14 April 1898, Copyright No. 15,350; the primer-coated cloth, 35x32", printed sheet with a large monkey in a festive jester's costume, holding an upturned cap outstretched in one paw; three large sheets, each 18x15", showing oversized, individually-numbered (1-20) "Indian Cent Pennies" entitled "One Penny For The Monkey's Donation," as well as a card containing a packed row of straight pins; and an additional 14¾x11¼" illustrated two-color advertising folio with "Copyright 1898 C.ZIMMERLING, PHILA." at the lower corner. Fine except for some creases and splits on the "penny sheets" from having been ensconced for so long.

A Ship, A Mining Company, and An Industrialist. Papers of the U.S. Sailing Ship "Jasper" of Fairhaven, Mass., captained by Elihu Gifford. A group of 19 papers related to the "Jasper": crew list, promissory notes, accounts, receipts, port charges (including those from a voyage to Bahia); and expenditures for a visit to St. Helena: payments to captain and crew, disbursements, etc. Many sizes; some soiling; overall very good. With a group of some 20 1904-1906 letters and bulletins regarding investments by a Mrs. Bolster of Canada in the U.S. Smelting Company; and an unaccomplished engraved invitation to the Gramercy Park home of industrialist Cyrus W. Field.

Archive Of A 19th Century California Judge. An archive from the family of Elisha Cotton Winchell, whose family originated in Massachusetts and in 1837 moved to Elmira, Missouri. (an 1898 47-page, typed document recalls the family's journey). The family moved to Sutter's Fort in 1850 and settled in Sacramento, then Fresno, and finally Oakland. Winchell was a lawyer, tax accessor, councilman and judge in Oakland. This collection includes checks, court documents, biographies, and some 20 photographs (many c. 1890), ranging in size from cabinet photos to 11"x14". Should be seen to be appreciated.

"Bringing Up Father" Jiggs Tobacciana Statue, c. 1915-20. A wonderful chalk Tobacciana advertising statue of the famous cartoon character "Jiggs" of "Maggie & Jiggs" from the famous cartoon created by George McManus that ran from 1913 into the 1950s, 10½x5½"; the figures stands on a circular base that is incused with the name "Father" and emblazoned on the front of his shirt is "I Smoke Edgeworth Tobacco." Jiggs is handpainted with black evening coat, pants and spats. His hair and lips are painted a cinnabar red, with a red-tipped nose, hand-drawn eyes and eyebrows, and a "cigar" sticking out of his mouth (Jiggs always had a cigar in his mouth in the cartoon). Some light scuffing, mall paint chipping, and dirt smudges, but no breaks or repairs. This figure would have been on display in tobacco shops. Accompanied by a partial sample page of the cartoon from the Boston Advertiser Sunday, April 1, 1923, with a 1972 book entitled "Bringing Up Father," showing hundreds of Maggie & Juggs cartoon strips.

California Orange Crate Labels. Two albums of over 90 beautiful, pristine orange crate and other fruit labels, most of them 10x11". Citrus labels were printed between 1880 and the 1950s and placed on the wooden crates in which the fruit, primarily navel oranges, was shipped. They were created by lithography studios in San Francisco and Los Angeles, and represented sunny California to snow-bound cities in the East. The fruits are shown in rich, lush colors, as well as images of Indians, padres, mountains, waterfalls, haciendas, animals, ships, lovely women, cute children, Queen Victoria, and more. Some of the brands represented in this collection are: Sunkist, Chapman's Old Mission, Redskin, Pacific Explorer, Polo, Popey, Pride of Valencia Cove, Reindeer, Rose, Royal Feast, Tom Cat, Unicorn, Silver Moon, Silva, Shamrock, Southern Cross, Silver Tips, Evening Star, Silver Moon, Morning Sun, Splendid, Sun, Vandalia, Victoria, Yo-semi-te, Yokohl, Airship, and many, many more. The owner paid almost $2500 for these labels over 25 years ago. They are a collector's item. Accompanied by a soft-cover book, "Orange Crate Art," a 94-page booklet from 1901, "Brands of Oranges and Lemons Controlled by the Southern California Fruit Exchange," and other articles and information on the labels.

Captain Hall: Travels in North America. 2 Vols, published by Carey Lea & Cary, Philadelphia, 1829. Written by a British Royal Navy Captain, discussing his observations on various subjects, including the "wretched state" of the U.S. military, admiration of Benjamin Franklin and a visit to his grave, a description of Philadelphia, and of the slave owners and slaves whom he saw in Virginia. Both volumes have the original slate-blue boards (some wear) with professionally rebound spines and new title plates; normal rough-cut pages of the period.

Ten songs by Stephen Foster are included, among which are: "My Old Kentucky Home," "Old Folks At Home," "Gentle Annie," "Lizzie dies To-Night," "Fairy-Belle," "Under the Willow She's Sleeping," "Farewell My Lilly Dear," and "Maggie By My Side." There is also a mazurka, a gavote, a schottisch, a galop, Episcopal church music, polkas, "Geronimo's Own Medicine Song," "The Octoroon Polka,""The Knights Templar Grand Entree March," "Our Union Right or Wrong Song and Dance," "Mele Hawaii," "The Cork Leg" and more; only one song book, "To the World and Budweiser," is 20th century (1909). Collection of Scarce Song Sheets: 1820s-1880. A collection of over 150 song sheets, the majority of which are from the Civil War period or earlier. Over 90 have fully illustrated black and white (some with color) covers, ranging from the comic to the patriotic; those from the 1840s-1860s are relatively scarce. Included is a wide variety of musical material, with Stephen Foster songs such as "My Old Kentucky Home," "Massa's in de Cold Ground," "Beautiful Dreamer," etc. Ethiopian medodies include songs sung by the Christie Minstrels. Some 30 pieces are from the 1820s to 1830s, about half of which are Scottish songs, the balance being from New York or Philadelphia. Average to fine condition, with small to larger tears on some sheets; light age toning. Should be seen in person to be appreciated. Sold "as is." The retail value is much higher than our estimate. An excellent lot for the dealer or serious collector.

Re-constructed shield with gray background containing 39 specimen notes of the first three issues of postage and fractional currency, including the Grant and Sherman essays. Fair to good condition with some repaired tears. The gray background shield has been cut out and remounted into a period-style wooden frame, 31¼" x 27¼". An attractive display item.

This was the first issue of these volumes, which contain 70 portraits and biographies of important figures in American history. Anthony from a Mathew Brady negative with facsimile signatures of the wedding party on the reverse. With miniature ¾"x1¼"visiting card of "Gen. Tom Thumb" (c. 1844) printed in gold on porcelain coated card. Both fine. Plus, 18 photographs of P.T. Barnum, Henry Irving, Adelina Patti and other figures from the world of entertainment. The 3½xx2" photos are glued to both sides of a 14x8¼" sheet. Very good; a few edge chips and tears.

San Francisco 1893 Vaudeville Show Broadside. An announcement for the "Farewell Tour of the Golden Gate Vaudevilles" of "100 Performers 100 Count Them!", Feb. 18, 1893. Printed in black on buff colored paper, 23" x 8". Depicts a pair of minstrels in black face with mouths agape as in song, along with a listing of the various acts to be seen, including a "Skirt Dance" by Mlle. Wilhelmina "who has received diamonds galore from the Crowned Heads of Europe and the Bald Heads of America". A few folds, otherwise very good condition.

Two pages from a French missal, 9¼x6½", written on vellum in liturgical black letters and gracefully decorated with alternating red and blue penwork initials whose flourishes extend deep into the margin. The four-line staves are drawn in red, on which the black square notes are placed. Fine; normal age toning. Missals rested on the altar during mass.

Collection of 26 19th Century Song Sheets. Eighteen are listed in Wolf's American Song Sheets, Slip Ballads and Poetical Broadsides (Philadelphi: Library Col, 1963). Many have decorative borders (four are colored). Titles include: "John Brown"; "Three Hundred Thousand More," beginning "We are coming, Father Abraam…."; "Sweet Mississippi"; and "The Sword of Bunker-Hill"; and "Witching Dinah Crow."" Sizes vary, the largest being 9¾x6"; each is housed in an archival mylar holder. Condition is very good to fine; some toning, edge chips, and small paper loss. Song sheets are single, printed sheets, usually 6x8", with lyrics but no music. Accompanied by six pieces of advertising ephemera: three touting organs and/or piano, one a camera, one a stationery store, and one the 1916 San Diego World's Fair.

Cornwallis, Admiral Sir William (1744-1819) British naval officer; brother of Charles, 1st Marquis and Earl Cornwallis. Vellum Indenture Signed "William Cornwallis" at the bottom of the first page, 2pp, 21x28" (1819). Fine. Concerning the lease of Rookcliffe farm at Hordle, Hampshire. Written in a neat flowing script with Cornwallis' personal wax seal. Cornwallis rose from Commander (1762) to Admiral (1799), taking part in actions off Grenada, St. Kitts, Dominica and East India.

One page is headed "Sexta tras müdi Folium CXXXIII" and the other "Sexta etas mundi Foliü CCXV." Very good; light toning; one light marginal statin. The Nuremburg Chronicles was a history of the world printed in 1493.

The third page is from "The fifth book of Boecius, Fol. 243" (Boethius' Consolation of Philosophy) translated by Geoffrey Chaucer in the 1380s and printed by William Caxton in 1478; toning and small edge tears at top.

Two pages are headed "The Historie of Englande; one is numbered "69" on one side and "70" on the other; the second page has "150" on both sides. One page is headed "Henry the fifth 1191" on one side and "Henrie the fifth 1192" on the other. Another page has "Henrie the fifth" on both sides, with "1205" on one and "1206" on the other. The fifth page has "Henrie the seuenth" and the date "1453" on one side; the other side has "Henrie the seauenth" and the date "1454." The sixth page has "Queene Mary" on both sides and the dates 1729 and 1730. Overall toning; light soiling; light stain at bottom of one page.
