(Lincoln, Abraham) The Richmond Times, April 21 & 22, 1865. Extremely rare issues of The Richmond Times, being the first two issues published in the former Confederate capital after it was occupied by Federal troops, 4pp each, 19" x 11½". Very good; some toning and wear to small areas. The first issue contains detailed reports of "The Great Tragedy! Particulars of the Assassination! The President's Death-Bed Scene! Funeral Ceremonies"; "The evacuation of Richmond. A Complete History," etc. The second issue contains "The President's Remains. Their Removal to Illinois. Condition of Mr. Seward. Address of President Johnson," as well as information about the assassination and the arrest and questioning of various people, including the actress Laura Keene, who was arrested and then discharged. Richmond was evacuated on 2 April 1865. On 3 April Federal troops under Major General Godfrey Weitzel received the city's surrender and occupied it. These two issues of the newly-published Richmond Times are of great historic interest.

Brady Photograph of A Company of Soldiers. 16x24" photograph (image is 13¾x21½") of an unidentified company of soldiers in uniform, all standing at ease, their weapons in front of them, no place, no date. The group is posed in front of a building, probably in Washington, D.C., where Brady had a studio; his name is in the plate in the lower right border. Lower edge has a faint pencil notation "F.C.L." and a line to a soldier in the front row. Mount has chipping and edge tears, one reaching into photo but not touching the soldiers; cracked lower right corner with old tape, easily matted and framed out. A terrific image.

Grant, Ulysses S (1822-85) 18th President of the United States (1869-77); Union general. Autograph Telegram Signed "U.S. Grant" on a Western Union form, 5¼x8", n.p., 11 Jan. 1882. Grant wrote, "To Gen. P.H. Sheridan, Chicago Ill. Whem may we expect you & Mrs. Sheridan?" Very good; overall age yellowing; partial fold splits at lower edge; upper right corner missing, affecting nothing. The Sheridans were probably going to visit the Grants in New York City, where they had moved in 1881. A communication between two of the major figures in the Union victory.

Winfield Scott; Union general; killed during the battle of Second Manassas when he accidentially rode into Confederate lines. Mexican War Requisition Signed "P. Kearny" as Lt. 1st Regt. Dragoons, 6¾x8", Vera Cruz, Mexico, 11 April 1847. Fine. For two days' rations. Four months later at Churusbusco, Kearney would be severely wounded and his left arm would be amputated.

In return I think he can satisfy you that I have loyally carried out your instructions, although my own judgment was not in accordance with yours…. So long as I remain in command of this army I will faithfully carry out the new programme. I feel quite confident that I will have everything across the Chickahominy by daylight. If all is then quiet I will regard my command as normally safe & will feel justified in moving it solely with reference to its speedy embarkation…."

To Dr. Thomas Ellis, an English physician who volunteered his services to the Union army and was a great admirer of McClellan. In part: "I…am glad to hear that you are about to publish the result of your observations during the recent campaigns of the Army of the Potomac….[and] for the compliment you pay me in desiring to dedicate your work to me…." Lincoln, however, was not so admiring of McClellan; he ordered Burnside to take command of the Army of the Potomac as of Nov. 7, 1862.

Civil War Commemorative Accolade for a Musician Soldier Mentioned For Gallantry. A large framed full color print recording the Civil War service of George L. Cooley, who "Entered the service as a Musician in Company F, 10th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry, Sept. 2, 1861 Mustered in Oct. 1, 1861, Re-enlisted for three years or the war, January 1, 1864, Mustered out, August 25, 1865, Veteran." In addition to his dates of service, there is a brief account of the 10th Connecticut, along with a month by month listing of the battles and campaigns Cooley participated in, including an engagement at Kinston on Dec. 14, 1862, where he was "Especially mentioned by General Foster for gallantry." This personal service history is hand inscribed in white ink on a black background in the center of the print and placed within a rectangular border of Civil War Corps badges below a federal eagle over four flags. Print size aprox. 25 1/2 x 15 1/2 inches, marked at bottom Copyrighted 1893 by W.C. Strickler and in in the original gilt wood frame aprox. 30 x 20 inches. There is slight water staining near the upper right corner of the print, not affecting the image, and old damage to various portions of the gilt decoration.

Sons of Veterans of the Civil War Sword. Established in 1881, this prominent Civil War related society, went through several name changes over its life. Known as Sons of Veterans (SV) in its early days, after 1904 it became the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUV). Membership required direct or close descent from a Union ancestor who served honorably during the war. It is still active with over 3500 members presently and operates a Civil War museum in Philadelphia.

This ca. late 19th century sword, from the earlier period of the society is marked "SV". Overall length is 36 1/2", with an etched and decorated steel blade maker named "Liller & Co. Columbus Ohio" with a crested helmet impressed logo. The handle is gilt bronze with a wire wrapped sharkskin grip. The guard is decorated with Union patriotic symbols. The 31 inch nickel plated scabbard has bronze fittings, rings and tip protector. The blade with signs of rust having been removed and the gilding substantially worn off. Light oxidation to the scabbard, but no damage or bends.

Max M. Connell. Surrender At Appomattox. Original watercolor showing General Robert E. Lee mounted on his horse Traveler and Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant standing on the front steps of the McLean home in the town of Appomattox Court House, Virginia, where Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia on 9 April 1865. The two generals raise their hats in a mutual gesture of respect, as do the Union troops standing on the porch behind Grant. A splendid painting, handsomely matted and framed to 19½x21½".
