1861 $2.50 Liberty. Type 2. NGC graded MS-61. Untoned. An attractive, if minimally Uncirculated example of this Civil War issue. Pop 60.

The Old Reverse hub of the Liberty Quarter Eagle, sometimes called the First Reverse, was introduced along with the type in 1840. This hub is identifiable by the close proximity of the lowest arrowhead to the CA in AMERICA and the closed talons on the eagle. Although replaced by a new reverse hub in 1859, the Old Reverse hub continued in use, albeit in a limited fashion, through 1861. The first Old Reverse Quarter Eagles were not discovered until the 1960s. Today, this variety is well respected as a significant rarity in all grades.
Estimated Value $400 - 500.

Lot 370
1878. NGC graded MS-62. Well struck and untoned. A frosty example. Coming off of 17 years during the "greenback" inflation of 1861-77, the mints began to accept gold for coinage and the banks actually resumed paying out gold at 100% of face value for paper money beginning in January 1878. The nation's banking community breathed a sigh of relief (PCGS # 7828) .
Estimated Value $350 - 400.
