Lot 3451
Fr-391. 1875, $2 National Bank Note. CGC Gem New 66. . Fr-391. . KL-1097. Wisconsin. The La Crosse National Bank. Charter 2344. Possibly "Finest Known" first charter note from this Wisconsin issuer, and certainly among the finest known of any of the rare $2 Lazy Deuce National Bank Notes. Serial No. 268. Magnificent color and fresh white paper, with crystal clear sepia-brown ink signatures of the bank officers. If ever a note deserved a home in a big "name" collection, it is this remarkable La Crosse $2!

The vignette, titled "Concordia," showing two maidens before an altar, was designed by T. A. Liebler and engraved by Charles Burt. The "Landing of the Pilgrims" on the back was engraved by Burt as well. Borders on the back are in green, the printing in black. A very handsome note.

The charter numbers were normally printed in red on these early notes, but a few banks issued 5 Dollar notes with the charter number printed in black in script numerals rather than block numerals. The serial numbers were printed in either red or blue, the records indicating that notes with blue serial numbers are somewhat scarcer.

National Bank Notes were first issued to the public on December 21, 1863, but notes are known dated in November 1863. Nationals were issued in denominations from 1 to 1,000 Dollars, there being two issues: the Original Series and the Series of 1875.
Estimated Value $24,000 - 27,000.
