Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 3289
1929, $100 Federal Reserve Bank Note. PMG Gem New 66. . Fr-1890-G. . KL-2754. Classic 1929 National Currency issue on the Chicago district federal reserve bank. When the government "closed the banks" during the banking crisis of 1932-33, the Treasury department told the Roosevelt administration it could immediately increase the money supply without having to apply to congress by issuing these 1929-series brown-overprint notes. Production ramped up for a time before new laws were introduced and passed allowing for a large increase in Federal Reserve Notes as well as Silver Certificates through the latter part of the 1930s. A fresh, crisp Gem 66 example!
Estimated Value $600 - 700.

These look at lot like the standard National Bank Notes of the 1929 series, but were backed by the individual Federal Reserve Banks whose title appears on the note, in this instance, the B district, New York, New York.

  Fr-1984-E. 1995 $5 Federal Reserve Note. Superb Gem New 68PPQ. . Fr-1984-E. Low serial No. E00000003D.

In a period not so long ago, the government would release all of its currency with no thought for the collecting public. Odd and curious serial number combinations weren't considered; most reached circulation and became worn. Nowadays, however, the Bureau that prints American paper money sets aside all of the low serial number notes for sale to collectors at a premium (or for sneakily lining the pockets of unnamed individuals in the hierarchy). Pretty soon if we don't watch out, they'll set aside the notes with multiple "8" numerals which are lucky numbers for a certain segment of the population of Asian descent!

1934, $100 Federal Reserve Note. PMG Gem New 66. . Fr-2152-D. Here we see a much earlier small size $100 bill with the payment on demand obligation that was revised during the Roosevelt administration. He took away the gold backing on American paper money in order for the government to inflate the money supply in the misguided hope this would end the Great Depression. Alas, the depression wouldn't budge, and conditions were still uncertain as late as America's entry into World War II in December 1941. A wonderful Gem quality representative of this Type. The green print of the 1934 series is more of a greenish-yellow color than the deeper forest green of 1950 and later series Federal Reserve Notes.
Estimated Value $500 - 600.

Lot 3334
Fr-2152-G. 1934, $100 Federal Reserve Note. PCGS Gem New 66PPQ. . Fr-2152-G. The earliest notes of the Federal Reserve series, before they became true "fiat" money in the 1970s, were WILL PAY TO THE BEARER ON DEMAND with reference to gold in the small print at the upper left, meaning that they were promissory notes (IOUs). By 1934, after Frankling Roosevelt withdrew the gold backing, the reference was also removed from the Federal Reserve notes, as seen here. After the 1963 series was introduced, the promise to pay a "thing" (gold or silver "dollars") has become the thing itself, a clever trick that the modern public hasn't a clue was pulled on them!
Estimated Value $400 - 500.

1950-D, $100 Federal Reserve Note. PMG Gem New 65. . Fr-2161-H. The 1950 series Federal Reserve Notes still referred to payment "on demand" of ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS but no mention is made of exactly what the payment is to be made in. Pre-1933, it stated gold or silver specie, with the unstated specie base upon written laws of a specific weight in metal. After 1933, the payment method became a nebulous term. Today, any piece of paper officially imprinted by the Federal Reserve as such constitutes "dollars" -- much to the profit of the government issuer, but also to the confusion of the marketplace and industry who has to deal with a fiat standard. It is as if a standard wooden yardstick were made of rubber that could stretch or shrink (usually shrink) at the will of the yardstick-issuing authority! So much for a lesson in $100 bill economics. This is a fresh bright Gem.
